How in the hell am I supposed to know what all these damn settings are in TMPGenc??? I have a DivX file that I want to be able to watch in my DVD player. You guys dont ever mention any of these crazy ass settings that it asks me about. What am I supposed to do and what is the best possible way to do it? Any software that you recommend, can you also tell me where to get it (without paying for it)? You guys make it sound so simple but then these programs ask for all these settings that I know absolutely NOTHING about.

TMPGenc does a 30 day trial for MPEG2 encoding for SVCD.. after that trial period, you would need to pay for the full version of TMPGenc plus.
You can still follow the guide, just check what your source FPS is using Virtual Dub. Click File->open and select the .avi source. Then, click File->File Information. This will tell you what FPS.
25 FPS = PAL
23.97 = NTSC FILM
29.97 = NTSC
in the guide under "Load the settings template", choose the corresponding SVCD template, ie: SuperVideoCD(NTSC).mcf
Alternately, you could use the wizard in TMPGenc to select these options instead.

Ok, im on the first step, opening the divx file with virtualdub, and it gives me an error saying "Couldnt locate decompressor for format "DIV3." VirtualDub requires a Video For Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. I havent heard anything about getting a codec for VirtualDub. Is there somewhere I can go to get this codec or what?

Couple more questions of course...I installed the nimo codec pack just fine, I chose full install just in case and I installed it to the default directory under program files, but when I get to the part in the guide about selecting vobsub under video filters, there isnt any vobsub to select. The last one on the list after I click add is TV...? What the heck am I doing wrong?

if you don't have a movie with subtitles, then just skip the whole section that says "Add the subtitles"
I personally only encode movies that are in english, so I have never had to use vobsub either, and therefore just skip that part of the guide..

IM baaaaack, but learning a lot. I have a divx file that I am not able to watch because of some audio issues. In Windows media player, it says I dont have this audio codec, and something about tag 2000!? I am COMPLETELY updated with my windows media player. I also try to view it with the DivX player and it just starts opening it then goes away. Do you think I should try and re save the file with virtualdub or TMPecng or whatever...?

So just install that codec and then what? Just try to watch it with media player or DivX player?
