encoding is very cpu intensive. Sounds like possibly a heat problem (mobo may have a safety switch, turns off when too hot). What are your sys specs??

Is it turning off at any other time??

Hi,

Notebooks are easily overheated when compressing a film. Just as deadcat stated, encoding is extremely CPU intensive and when coupled with a notebook that has limited cooling capability you've got a great recipe for heat problems especially running very hot P4 3.06!

It may be worthwhile to check into one of those cooling thingies that have fans in them for the notebook to sit on. Here's what I'm talking about:

If i had to have a gues, and it is a heat problem, id say your fan is stuffed. Maybe dusty. Does it switch off at any other time?? While playing games etc??

Sounds very strange that it was turning off during the re install of xp.

It's really hard to say exactly why this started but the symptoms and circumstances scream "heat problem!"

I've no experience with laptops so maybe someone else here with more working knowledge of them could give some input.
