I have been working day in/day out on copying DVDs bigger than 4.7 gig. No luck! Looked through threads ect... No luck. I don't wana break 40 days into 2 disks. Here it is; don't laugh: Rip to H.D.(no prob) then use ReMpeg to do @ 90% quality (8 hr's)for a .m2v file. The file will now fit on DVD 4.7 gig. The new file is jumpy, with blocks though??!!! Can someone pls take pitty on me (or my loved ones) and help? I know it's simple, just not for the sleep deprived. Can someone share there method? It's the compresion thing. Other threads said it might be the Mirmax/W.B. logo on the front???? Other software? Destroy the DVD burner? good idea.

Smeee,

1. Are you using Ifoedit to edit the files?

2. What are your exact settings on Rempeg2? Besides the scale factor%.

Smeee, I have also just started using ReMpeg to shrink my VOBs and also get the jumpy thing as well (not getting blocks though). I looked at a thread last night that suggested switching the 'Frame mode' to "Match Source" instead of "Progressive only".

Haven't tried it myself yet...... but if it works I'll post an update.

Menmaddi and Z3! Thanx's for the reply.
I have tryed almost all settings on ReMpeg. Match source, 720x480 @90% with full search is by far the best, but slow slow slow. I use any ripper (tryed all) then use ReMpeg to shrink. I get one big m2v file (aprox 4 gig). The first bit is jumpy when played. I can play the file and check it by opening it with any player (so its not the remux'n after). The problem occurs when it goes through ReMpeg. If I only do one @ a time, the output for VOB #1 is junk, I shrink only VOB #2 or VOB #3 ect.. the pic. is fine! This also happened with changing lanes! All over the movie on that one.
They is a thread on re_mpeg above this one with info from Menmaddi that sounds siml'r to my prob.
Help!

In your first post you said that other threads have suggested the logo may be the culprit.

I have read similar conclusions. So, you can use Ifoedit to strip out the logo if its in a seperate PGC.

You said that the 2nd .VOB plays fine and so forth right? Try to strip the movie (using Ifoedit) down to the bare min. Movie +1audio, no subs. Try ripping to two discs(if you have a DVD-RW so you don't waste media) and see if the first part still plays choppy without rencoding.
I haven't had this problem yet with Rempeg2.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Something else you said...
If you are running the movie through Rempeg at 90% but you aren't editing anything out first and it fits on one DVD-R then why can't you edit the movie using Ifoedit first. You may be able to strip enough bs out to make it fit on oneDVD-R WITHOUT reencoding!

Thanx's for the reply menmaddi.
I have tried playing parts of the movie. All work if not ReMpeg'd.
I have only copy'd the main movie VOB's + IFO to my H.D. so it's a bare bones movie. It still doesn't fit though (they rec'd the dam movie at a high bit rate I think). I like your idea on getting rid of the logo. It's part of the first VOB. How would I break it up, and isolate the first few sec's? All help is good help, thanx's in adv'nce.

Smeee,
Sorry I didn't realize that you aren't familiar with Ifoedit.

Just because you only ripped the main movie .VOBs and relevent files doesn't mean that the movie can't be further stripped of unwanted accessories like language menus, subtitles, angles, extra audio streams ect...

Removing these could lose 1G or more off the files and you won't even miss the stuff. Go here http://www.doom9.org and print out the basic Ifoedit guide it will get you started and I can help with any bumps in the road.

Don't serve the papers yet Mrs. Smeee!! He's almost got it!!

menmaddi, thank you. Since most of my info has been gained by trial and error, I have a swiss cheesed idea of how to fit 6-9 gig on a DVD 5. I will try IFO edit, and strip strip strip (the wife will like that no doubt). I had read about the option, but thought I'd try compressing instead. DVD's AGGHHGHHH.
This is wayyy harder than I thought! After this I should go work for Hollywood... No, couldn't live with myself.

Once you get a grip on Ifoedit, which is the ONLY editing tool out there that I am aware of, it will all make more sense. The latest upgrade is o.94. So when you read the guides at Doom9, realize that there have been some changes.

I only reencode as a last resort if I can't quite get the movie small enough for 1 DVD-R but it's too small to be worth 2 DVD-Rs(you know they ain't cheap even in the States).

One suggestion. Make a copy of all your original files in a new folder and work off of those. This way if you screw up you won't have to rip everything all over again.

Good Luck

Thanx's!
I think I may have just got this one. When I stripped the VOB's down, I found two angles in two diff. parts of the movie! They each had the same video in them, so they were pointless! Once I stripped it, the file was still to big (4.89 gig) ahhhh. But now I used ReMpeg, and the first VOB is fine! No jumping/skipping. It was the extra angles that were messing the whole thing up. I will let you know how the whole thing goes after it's done... looks good though. Also the other movie I was having trbl with (Changing lanes) was stripped using IFO edit, and now is less than 4.7 gig so I don't need to ReMpeg. Also the Doom9 site was great. Some was too advanced for me, but I'll get there one day. I think I may have got this in time... Cuz there seems to be alot of legal papers on the kitchen table with my name on 'em.
Thanx's again!!!

p.s. Where are you getting blanks? I have done 15 iso copy's of DVD5's to DVD-R with no prob on disk's I got in the USA for $0.80 USD! No Prob's! Even with customs and shipping they are still dirt cheep.

Smeee,

Sounds like you have it. However, Your files must me 4.37G or less to fit on a 4.7G DVD-R!

You can still strip out language menus and subtitles.

I've been getting Memorex and Fujifilm DVD-Rs from different stores. Much more expensive than what you pay. Does your media work well? What brand and where do you get it?

Smeee thinks I can get the file down to 4.37 gig. I will do more when I get home. The disks are generic silver DVD-R from L.A.
I was not sure if I wanted to do risk buying generic disks, but I gave it a try. I have been told sooo many times not to buy generic. I think I lucked out. Try to get 25 to start with. They also ship 1 or 2 to try (you pay though) and thats what I did. You have to buy 100 for the $0.80 ea price, and you can get another 100 DVD cases for $0.28 ea. If you buy less (25-50) it's a bit more. It's free shipping is the USA, but I live in Canada, so I had to pay $27.00 USD for shipping! Then customes and Canadian tax. In all, it came to $146.00 USD (in Canadian about $234)There is no sales tax over the net. The site: http://www.blank-cd-cdr.com/product/dvdr.html
Great people, and the disks work great! The site has a price of $115 USD (comes with 100 DVD-R & 100 cases), but call and get 'em for $108
