siciliana...

Are you saying that you are putting the burned DVD back into the same Liteon drive that burned it...and rather than launch a player like PowerDVD...the computer reboots? What happens then? Can you open the player, and then play the DVD? Or does the 'puter just keep rebooting?

alright, I just got home from work and tried opening the movie from windows media player, and the movie worked? So, my problem must be the other program I was using power dvd?
but yes I would put the movie in the drive that burnt it and nothing would happen (minus the drive making some noise) then I would open Power dvd and try to play the movie and it is then that the computer would just reboot. But, I never tried to play it a second time after the 1st reboot, I just took the movie out.

What happens when you put a standard DVD into the drive? Does PowerDVD handle that OK?

It's beginning to sound like you were using a low-grade media for your backup. What brand were you using?

those discs are from newegg I believe the brand is legacy, I am currently waiting for my new shipment of Ritek DVD-R 4.7G 4X 50PACK, Model DRD-47-4X-RDSM, OEM.

If the problem is the media do you think I would be able to copy the ones I already have done to the new discs? (I am only talking about like 10 movies) The legacy brand so far outside of my computer have been fine.

Well...it's a high probability its the media.

From what you said at the beginning, you can't play the backups in the drive that burnt them. To copy your backups...at the very least...I think you need to find a way to get the DVD backup files back on your hard drive. Even then, I think you could have some problems burning readable Riteks, and would describe the project as iffy.

It only costs money to try, though. While you are waiting on the Riteks...which is a very good choice...maybe you could borrow a friends DVD-ROM and see if it will read the backups. If so, load the backup files to yhe HD and try it out one by one.

Hey doc-

My drive did work with the backups when I used media player as apposed to power dvd? In the beginning I was always trying to open with power dvd and with power dvd open is when the system would crash.

I overlooked that on the re-read. There's hope afterall.

While you are waiting for the Riteks, there are some things you should do to confirm your system is ready to burn trouble-free.

When you get a chance...tell me what software you are using to rip and burn. Also, a little about your computer...the type of CPU, how much RAM, burner mfgr, and your hard drive size. Also what Windows you are using. When you do this, we can check some things to make sure you are ready when the Riteks arrive.

Well...your system has the umph to do what you need.

So, are you using DeCrypter's burn function? And don't have any other burner?

I also have as part of sonic (power dvd) there is a program in that called Record Now I think that's the name. I am at work right now and can't double check.

It would be Record Now. It could even be related to your problem. You are going to need another burner program...and I would recommend Nero. It also has a lot of nice features you can grow into. I will get back with you with a link for a low-cost download.

I meant to ask...are you the one that spec'd out the system and put it together?

Not via this board.
A friend of mine spec'd out my system and I just bought the pieces and the two of us put it together.
The funny part to me is that I built this system simple to play online Urban terror my old graphics card couldn't keep up!

thanks for your help it is much appreciated

No prob. That is funny. So now you can keep up with UT, eh? Never tried it, but heard about it. Maybe we can get you to crunching files while you fight it out.

I haven't tried running anything in the backround while duking it out on UT. My old system I had to disable norton while playing, but the new system I don't need to!

Hey doc-
Another question, I have been reading a lot on cdfreaks
about firmware for the dvd players. but, that is way over my head. Is that for my basic terms allowing the dvd player to be tweak in order to burn faster?

That's a good question. The burner's controller has a chip that is programmed with instructions...and a firmware upgrade makes a change to these instructions.

Before making any firmware upgrade, you should read what it does, and if you need it. For instance, some are specific to just a certain operating system. Once the change is made, there is very little you can do to undo it.

There are firmware upgrades for your new Liteon if you haven't made them already. I recently did my Sony and it meant an increase in reading and writing speed. It also became more forgiving in dealing with low-grade media.

I did see the upgrade for my burner, I am/was a little chicken about doing it. I will read up a little more and make my decision.
thanks

When you get the chance, give your Liteon's drive numbers. I'll look at the upgrade also.

Here is a $49 download of Nero. Any version of Nero 6 Ultra should get you going though. If you do dl this, don't upgrade to the newest June 1st release yet. There may be a bug or two.

If I may interrupt here :)

Here's a good link for firmware and there's a ton of great info about firmwares and installing them at the forum there. Really good stuff!

thanks for all the help on this
and as for the firmware I think I am just going to stay away from it for now. Once I get Nero I will probably have more questions so stay turned, but now I must play a little UT

Once you get Nero, it will have Nero Info Tools. Tools has a lot of useful info, and it will tell you what Firmware Version your drive has. If there is a more recent version for WinXP OS's, will need to do the factory upgrade if you want your drive to work the way it is designed.

Doc49 - for now I downloaded a free trial of Nero. Will that be good enough in order to sort out my root problem?

I was amazed to see everything that showed up in Nero tools. What from there would you like to know?

also, I tried burning an iso file created by schrink using Nero and I am getting same results specifically that I can put in a dvd-rw record @4x or 2x speed with norton disabled that update manager disabled get a good burn then put in a dvd-r same process and it not work right? By not working right what I am doing is 1. closing Nero 2. opening schrink and letting schrink do it's analysis. if the analysis finishes I am assuming I have a good burn. (I hope that's a good assumption?)
