Hi. Welcome back.

Yes, the Nero trial will work fine.

The first thing to do is a firmware upgrade. I had a similar problem with my Sony 530A, and the upgrade solved the problem.

Search the Liteon site for the upgrade for your drive. I know this is new for you. If you are unsure, give me the drive number. I will check to see which upgrade you need.
------

Added on: The RecordNow software needs to be removed ... hopefully before installing Nero. There could be sw conflicts.

This would be a good time to see if you are still having the same -RW & -R media problem.

SICILIANA,

I never meant to sound mean about the rules :)

Now let me try and help.
1) You can play your backups using Windows Media player, but not PowerDVD.
2) You use DVD Shrink in re-author mode.

I wonder if using re-author may be your problem, since re-authoring disables the menu's. Have you tried backing up a the whole disc (menus, extras, etc ...) with Shrink, then running it through PowerDVD?

Which version of PowerDVD are you using? I tried an OEM version of v5.0 and didn't like it ... went back to PowerDVD(4.0). Also you can try this player to see if your problem is PowerDVD. It's a free player http://www.cliprex.com/

results specifically that I can put in a dvd-rw record @4x or 2x speed with norton disabled that update manager disabled get a good burn then put in a dvd-r same process and it not work right?
When your successful using RW's and unsuccessful using +/-R's usually is fixed by updating your aspi layer. ForceASPI is the easiest to install:

power dvd is version 5.0

I updated my aspi following the steps from the site, then ran the aspichk.exe and it said my aspi was fully installed and operational. So, hopefully that does the trick.

Flip- thanks for the aspi link. I will go thru my movies and find a small one that I can backup without re-authering and see what happens. Report back later. I have a lot to do today outside of the computer :(

I did one full backup after the updates without any problems, but I would like to try a few more to complete the test. will report back as soon as possible

If ya don't mind me asking ... Which updates? And what did you try differently (ie.not using re-authoring).?

Ok here we go....

1. Updated firmware via liteon's main website.
2. Followed Flip's link and downloaded the ASPI.
3. Downloaded free trial of Nero (for now)
4. grab an assortment of my movies (some long, some short, some old, some new.

Backed up 8 total movies and had one failure.

Brake down of movies
6 were re-authered via Shrink to iso files
2 were complete backups via schrink to iso files

disabled Norton + screen saver

Burned #1 re-authered iso file using Nero on Ridata dvd-r 4x @ a rate of 4x (success)

Burned #2 complete backup iso file using Nero on ridata dvd-r 4x @ a rate of 4x (failure?) I put the dvd back in the computer and started up schrink. Schrink couldn't get through the initial analysis giving error "data error (cyclic redundancy check)"
So, stumped I played the failed movie in Stand alone player and got to a certain point and movie froze.

Ok
#2a put a legacy dvd-rw in and burned again with all things the same except change the write speed to 2x
(success)
#2b put in a dvd-r ridata 4x and burned yet again using write speed of 2x (success)

#3-8 Burned the rest using ridata dvd-r 4x burning at a rate of 2x and the rest were successful.

I came to the conclusion that my system just can't seem to consistanly burn at a rate of 4x.

What do you guys think?

Well I like burning at 2.4x , had a couple of dvd's start skipping and freezing burning at 8x. Also, can you check to see what your ide settings ... what is the transfer mode?

to check your ide setting;
control panel -> system -> hardware tab -> device manager -> ide ata/atapi controllers -> right click primary ide channel, then click the advanced tab. Do the same for secondary ide channel

flip do you mean primary ide channel?
if so
master liton dvdrw sohw-812s
dma on
autorun on

slave sibdt cd-rw
dma on
autorun on

then it lists another primary ide channgel
master hds72258vlat20
dma on

couldn't find transfer mode

device 0
current = ultra dma mode 5
device 1
current = not applicable

SICILIANA...

I've seen flip help a lot of folks. Where the problem started was the multiple posts. While the rules say "no double posts" they never really give someone new to forums a definition of what a double post is. The rules assume visitors know forum terminology, but why should they? When someone does double post, though, it devalues the person trying to help ... and some can be a lot harsher than anything flip said. I certainly felt devalued when I came across your other posts. That is why I said something, but I also realized it could be an innocent mistake. I also realized you thought you had different problems ... and this is because you didn't understand they likely had a common root. Enough said.

This is a read problem with the source DVD. Clean the disc as best you can, and run it through DVD DeCrypter in File mode. You will be able to see the progress of the read. If it completes successfully, you can then transfer the files into Shrink with the Open FIles and get a good burn.
-------------------------
Added On: There are also some discs where Shrink has a problem with the copy protection. Run these through DeCrypter.

You should be burning at 4X with a 3.0 GHx P4, 512MB RAM, and your upgraded Liteon. So, we're not finished yet. We need to check your virtual memory (page file) values. Go to Contol Panel/System/Advanced..and click Settings in the Performance setting. Click Change to check/change the settings.

If Windows is managing the page file then it fragments your drive horribly every time you crunch a file. You need to manage VM by setting the min and max values to the same number, and I would suggest 4000 MB for your system when you crunch video files. Once you set this, reboot, and run defrag. Your crunching will likely go faster, and it will likely get you to a 4X burn.

The other thing to do is to make sure you have enough buffer for burning. Launch Nero and go to Burning ROM. Pull down File/Preferences/Ultrabuffer tab. This is usually set to Manual/80 MB in a default install. AS you have adequate RAM memory, I suggest you make this setting Automatic.

One other thing that I like to do is monitor the system during the whole rip and burn process. There is a neat utility for this. Do Ctrl-Alt-Del once and when the box pops up, go to Task Manager/Performance. This will give you a live reading on what is going on. Your CPU will often be at 100% when using Shrink. Your Physical Memory/Available most likely won't ever go below 100,000, but in any case, it should never bottom out.

Let us know how it goes.

OK-
update-
finished defrag
Only had time to copy one of my movies, but here's what I did.
created iso with schrink full backup norton etc disabled.
burnt dvd using Nero @4x using dvd-rw success so, again
burnt dvd using Nero @4x using dvd-r success

during schrink process my cpu usage ranged from
20%-40%
during burning process cpu usage was
0% (is o% normal for burning?)

and the physical (available) memory never went below 240,000.

when I get a chance I will do some more and report back. Hopefully I will be able to consistanly burn @4x.

With all the systems I know about Shrink CPU is often 100% in both analyzing and encoding. Your CPU may be slowing down due to overheating. Since you put things together with a friend, make sure you have a good connection between the heatsink and the CPU. Use a good silver-based thermal paste. Its really inexpensive on ebay.

Decrypet runs around 60%. RAM memory usage runs from 130 to 160 MB in Shrink analyzing and encoding, which is what you are getting.

Burning is a slow process compared to how fast the processor works, and so a 0% to 5% CPU peak is normal.

I think you are on your way to problem-free burning!!! I would appreciate a final post after a few more burns?
