Hello. I know from the topic of this post you're probably thinking, "not another DMA/Pio question." Well, I know how to tell if my IDE is in PIO/DMA mode and I also know how to switch between the two. My primary and secondary IDE are currently in Ultra DMA mode 5. It is my device or dvd drive (optorite DD1203) that states its current tranfer mode is PIO. Normally when the system is in PIO mode, you can tell while burning because the long buffer display would fluctuate up and down very rapidly. But in my case its the smaller buffer display thats labeled device, that is moving up and down very rapidly. How do I change my device to DMA.

XP Home, 1.7ghz, 256RAM. DVD Decrypter, Alcohol 120%, Nero Express 6.

PS. This just started to happen. Just yesterday, I burned with no problem

Click My Computer-- select Properties -- Hardware Tab -- Device Manager --- Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers tree -- Right click the Primary IDE Channel - select Properties - click the Advanced Tab settings .

There your drive will be shown and you can select either Pio or Ultra DMA Mode.

Your optorite DD1203 is a device that has Interface: E-IDE / ATAPI(Ultra DMA mode2) See Specs at:- http://cdr-info.com/Sections/News/Details.asp?RelatedID=5625

Note: By all means do this on your Secondary IDE Channel if you have the drive installed there ~~smiles

As I stated in my post, I already know what you've posted. Let me be more descriptive. My drive is on my secondary IDE as master. When I go to device manager and select the properties tab of the secondary IDE, it has Device 0 and Device 1. On device 0, the device type is greyed out and set to Auto detection. The tranfer mode is set to "DMA if avalible." Lastly, the current tranfer mode is set at "PIO" Device 1 is the same except the current transfer mode says, "not applicable." What do I do to change the current tranfer mode to DMA instead of PIO. Remember I have the tranfer mode set at, "DMA if avalible."

Hi,

You might try uninstalling the drive through Device Manager, reboot, then let windows detect/install the drive.

In Device Manager, go to CD/DVD ROM Drives, double-click the drive in question, got to the Driver tab, select Uninstall, then OK, then reboot. Windows should now detect and install the drive. You can now check the transfer mode for the drive.

If that doesn't work it may help to do the same routine, but instead of uninstalling just the drive go ahead and uninstall the whole IDE that has the drive on it.

I'm certain The Drive was in PIO mode. I fixed the problem by unistalling the master IDE and rebooted. That fixed it. I'm curious to how the PIO mode was enabled, I know I didn't do it.

For repeated DMA errors. Windows XP will turn off DMA mode for a device after encountering certain errors during data transfer operations. If more that six DMA transfer timeouts occur, Windows will turn off DMA and use only PIO mode on that device.
