An interesting idea.

would this just be a popularity contest or could you actually discriminate?

I think Prisoner?s right that this could easily devolve into a popularity contest. By what criteria do we choose from, the most helpful, the most knowledgeable, or the most creative? Do we choose winners from each status group?

I do however like the idea of making it a newbie, junior member, and member award. As we all know many newbies and members do a lot of the assisting on AD and many of them are also among the most knowledgeable of AD members.

I have noticed since started this thread alot of people are going on about the amount of post's and the size of the post.I do hope that it will go on quality. So what if someone has pasted a few bits and bobs from a guide. Were missing the point here this means the guy has took time out to find the information and pass it on.Some times it will be long maybe this person is someone that wants to put all the details in for someone to follow. If you break it down in short it does not always help.Who cares how long or short it is or where they got the information from it is quality we are looking for.Look at scuba pete he has some really long post's but it normally covers everything and he takes the time out which is a real plus for this site as it means more will join.Lets stick with quality and this will be the winner.

What a hot potatoe. Honors would be nice for some, but the chance for abuse is definitely there. Me, I prefer a good hearty thank you any day. Plus, if one works hard, they can get more of them (thank yous) than a single award. Sort of where one has their priorities is part of the question; or is that solution?

Mayhaps I should expand my post :-)

The "Member of the Month" would be chosen from Newbies, Juniors and Members. As John pointed out, it would be based on the quality of the posts and not quantity as quantity may very well reduce the forum to an over abundance of garbage.

The determination of the "Award" would be decided by the Mods, as they are "everywhere" more than most. A thread might be established for the purpose of nominating a Newbie, Junior or Member but would not be an influencing factor in the final "Award" decision. The thread would be there more for those who feel that someone deserving might be overlooked.

Only those who have been in the forum for a full month would be eligible.
Any member chosen for "The Member of the Month" would not be eligible again for consideration for a full calendar year.

The "Award" itself would be in the form of "Postie" on the forum's main page, in color.

My thoughts only,

Suggestions, modifications and comments more than welcome -

"P".

Outstanding idea Prae, that would divide those with increasing experience into proper groups of their peers. That would even the playing field quite a bit :)

It would also make the choices much easier for thems that have to make it :D)

Ya can't be any fairer than that -

I agree with the proposal of Praetor and Pete. Let there just be suggestions from the rank and file and leave the decision to the Mods for newbie, junior, and member of the month. That way if something fouls up, we know who to ask. 8~D

I agree, Praetor never seems to sleep and when he's at his best, it makes it a joy to be here. I also agaree with ScubaPete, he's the newbie ambassador to AD and graced with the patience of Job.

I thought that was clearly stated when I said the "patience of Job."

HUuuuuuuummm,

I don't know about patience, could it possibly be that de ScubaPete is just sooooo slow on the uptake that it just seems like patience ?? (Lol)

Thanks for the kind words fellows -

We doubt the slow part Pete. You do a good job and if they were giving out awards you should get one for your work and patience with the Newbies. Now about that Job... Hmmm.

I was under the impression that what John179 had in mind was for a "Member of the Month" to be an award for Newbies, Junior Members and Members.

Seniors, Addicts and Mods would not be eligible -

That's how it should be - that would be the fair way -

Pete

Heck Pete,
Then they can just give you the modesty award or a one time commendation for a job well done in Newbie land. I don't give compliments lightly or often, but on occasion I give credit where credit is due. You're probably right about the actual awards if they ever start giving them.

@ScubaPete: I'll go out on a limb and say that most, if not all, of the seniors, addicts, and mods here would agree about giving the award only to newbies, juniors, and members. The way I see it, it could be a good way to spread the credit around, and make sure those who help out feel appreciated.

@Everyone: On the other hand, whether this goes anywhere or not, you can always show anyone here that you appreciate their help with a simple Thank You. Believe me, most of the time it's appreciated as much as any award.

Scubapete i agree with yourself in aspect these awards should go to the junior members. However we should not leave the senior members out in the cold as guys like yourself are the back bone of the forum. So even if we can not move seniors up a level i think a big nice thank you from all at AD on the news letter would be a nice touch.I know we always thank you but haveing these sort of things on the front news page from time to time can show how much members are valued at AD and newbies on the site for the first time will get this impression from the off.We all reconize the help you give to all especially the newbies your like there guardian when they arrive on the site.I just don't like the thought of including everyone to some exstent.
Thanks
John179
