I recently downloaded ASFRecorder to capture a few files off of www.xsao.net. From what I understand, both work about the same. We just have to provide the URL and the program does the rest. However, ASFRecorder is unable to capture files at xsao.net. The URLs are named like this: http://xsao.net/Music/xsao.cgi?song=2/22355/24390_1_5.

I think that because there's no reference to an *.asx file, ASFRecorder can't do its job. However, will Streambox VCR be able to help me? Thanks a lot for your help with this question.

This is a redirector. It is a none standard redirector which means that does not have the normal extensions like .asf or .ram.
The stream that this redirector points to was not working when I tried it.

I picked a different song.
Evanescence: Bring Me to Life.

It can be downloaded with StreamBox VCR using MMS(HTTP) Protocol. But I would suggest using a better Windows Media recorder. GetASFStream would be my top choice. Net Transport or SDP Multimedia would be other good choices.

Wow, thanks so much for your help! However, I don't entirely understand everything that you taught me. I am using Windows XP Pro. I am able to find the "redirector" by going to my Temp Internet Files and searching under there. But, how can I get to find that source code? Do I have to use some other software to find it? And, even when I try to listen to the "asf" at home with Media Player 9, I haven't been able to. I can only listen to these songs on the computer here at work.

I'm sorry to ask so many questions, but I'm still fairly new at all of this. Thanks for all of your help. I'll also try to find those other programs you suggested and to read the info. you sent.

Thanks!

You don't have to look in the Temporary Internet Files for the redirector URL in this case. When the song plays in Windows Media Player, click File > Properties.

Copy the redirector URL from Properties and paste it in the Internet Explorer address bar. Type view-source: in front of the URL and press enter. A Notepad window will open showing the source code of the redirector. That source code contains the stream URL.

Well, I'm still having problems downloading files. Here's one of the files that I've tried to download with Streambox VCR: mms://a420.v8384d.c8384.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/420/8384/3b858b51/mtvrdstr.download.akamai.com/8512/wmp/4/21706/23932_1_1_04.asf

It connects, but finally reports: "Server: Requested File Not Found." And, I can't even pop this file up in Windows Media Player 9.0; I receive a similar message such as "Media Player can not connect to the server. It may be busy." But, I know that file is there. I listened to it at work today! Plus, I was able to get the source code.

Is there something in XP Pro or Windows Media Player 9 that is blocking me from capturing the files? The Streambox VCR program seems to be working fine.

Thanks for all of your help.

Please disregard that last post. I was actually able to capture the file! :) I just had to change the protocol settings as you had suggested. However, I do have a couple more concerns. 1. Can the server "see" me downloading files? And what precautions, if any, should I take when capturing files? 2. Do I rename the file with an asf, mp3, or wma extension? 3. What protocol do I use to download other files (such as .rm, .ram, etc)?

Again, thanks for all of your help. This is a great forum!!
