i recently tried to back up call of duty with my Philips PCRW 1208 CD-R/RW burner. it didnt work so i just figured my burner wasnt up to it. later i tried to back up an audio cd and it gave me an error message about power calibration. could call of duty's safedisc 2.9 have killed my burner?

I doubt it was SafeDisc that killed your burner. Power calibration errors can be the sign of a dying burner. Take it as the perfect excuse to get a new burner.........
I see from from your sig that you want the Plextor PX-712A. It's a great choice and a very, very fine drive that should be quite good at backing up PC protections (my PX-708A does a fine job backing up games).

Indeedy,
1. Phillips isnt quite known for "high quality" type products
2. The only way (realistically) SD can ruin your drive is if, during a image dumping, you select to "Fast Error Skip" (which your're supposed to) and your drive doesnt actually support that feature.
3. Go for the Plexey :)

yeah my philips is quite old. i bought it probably 5 years ago. i'm definitely going for the px-712a, as i have found it online for as low as $158

get the pioneer 108...its coming out in a months time and is supposed to bethe best drive. i i have the 107 and can honestly says its the best

yeah im probably gonna get the plexy. at first i was unsure because there was no dual layer support, but i found DVD Shrink, so its no problem

- Plextor make the best drives. Period. They cost a lot but for those who will make use of the performance and capabilities they are worth it.
- Pioneer is the best all-around burner -- but the the best burner period.
- NEC is.... uh.... yeah

Plextor and Pioneer both have sterling reputations for quality, performance and reliability. NEC doesn't.

The Pioneer is an excellent all-around burner no doubt but I'm sure the people there would also agree that it is not a a 2-sheep burner. As for that specific NEC drive I'm not certain but I do know the NEC1300 and NEC2500s cause a lot of people grief. I suspect they are reccommended because of their cost-performance ratio

The last few Lite-On DVD burners are 2-sheepers but I said that since daemonzx6 was interested in the Plexy ;)

ive never heard of a 3 sheep burner, but i know that 2 sheep burns bit patterns correctly and 1 sheepers burn almost correctly, so how could a burner get better then 2 sheep?

im pretty sure "sheep" is just a term used to describe the different classes of burners and how they burn bit patterns. "2 sheep" burners burn bit patterns correctly, "1 sheep" burners burn bit patterns almost correctly, and the oldest "No sheep" burners dont burn bit patterns correctly at all. as for the "3 sheep" burner praetor is talking about ive never heard of one and i dont see how it could be better than correct

Without sidetracking too much:
When talking about backing up games and such there's a lot of talkBurners capable of correctly performing EFM (eight-fourteen modulation) are designated as 2-sheep burners. Burners that can almost perform correct EFM are designated as 1-sheep burners. Last on the totem pole, 0-sheep burners cant perform EFM properly at all. More on topic, if your primary task will be to burn CDs -- dont get a Plexy -- not worth the price jump. Get yourself a solid 2-sheep burner (ASUS, Plexy, Liteon, etc) and get the venerable Pioneer DVD burner.

my primary goal isnt just for the cds. i want to get the plexy because of the dvd burning features it has and the speed it can perform them at.
