My quick backround. Have a Dell 8300 pentium 4 with 1g memory and a 400g harddrive.
My motherboard and hard drive blew up and were both recently replaced. I have had the liste problem below since replacin the motherboard, never had these problems before.
I have a hacked pioneer 107 that works perfectly in another machine. My settings for both drives are set to DMA however, one of them says "DMA if available" and shows the current transfer mode as PIO.
My problem is that I am unable to get my Pioneer 107 to burn at 4x or even 8x. Nero indicated those speeds but all I am getting is 1x and a buffer level that jumps wildly. Both drives are set to cable select so the placement on the cable shouldn't be an issue. When I try and switch them to master and slave one of them doesn't get recognised by my computer so I stick to cable select.
What the hell is going on? Is the drive stuck on PIO? If it is, I have no idea how to "force" it into DMA because in my settings the only optin I have is DMA if available or PIO only.
None of the IT guys know what to do and I have nowhere else to turn. Any help would really be appreciated, I will be refreshing this site every 30 minutes for an answer.
Thanks guys.

In the Device Manager.
Right click on your DVD drive and select Uninstall.
Right click on the IDE channel that DVD drive was on and select Uninstall.
Reboot and let Windows reinstall the drive and IDE channel.

In my last hours of panic and after about ten 1x burns, I think I have solved the problem but, I still need some help.
The issue is that the tech, when reinstalling my motherboard, switched the ribbon cables on my HD and CD/DVD drives. While they both fit and are both acceptable, the HD cable allowed me to make my Pioneer 107 the Master and the Sony DVD Rom drive the slave while the other had the connectors reversed making it impossible to make my burner the master. A simple cable swap solved the problem but, the issue WAS the DMA because the burner was the SLAVE and the slave couldn't have DMA ON.
Now everything is working and back to normal but, I would like some of you to check your settings for me.
I have 2 computers 1 just for burning and one for dual purpose. I noticed on my just for burning machine, when the master is the Pioneer 107 it has DMA ON. However, the slave has DMA OFF. I checked this in Nero under "get system info".
Now that machine works great so I checked my dual purpose machine and it said the same thing, that my reader had DMA OFF but, the burner had DMA ON.
So my 2 questions are:
Do your machines indicate that the reader has DMA OFF in Nero system info? (NOT in device manager)
How do you "force" the reader into DMA ON? And does it really make a difference on the reader if DMA is on or off anyway?
Thanks guys.

Both my burner and my ROM show DMA on, when I checked it in Nero.

All drives should have DMA enabled regardless of position on the IDE cable.

OK, so both of my machines have the reader as DMA if available and current trasnfer mode PIO.
How can I change that so that NERO sees it differently?
XP indicates DMA is on so..
BIOS has both settings to AUTO

So the "Current Transfer Mode" is listed as "Ultra DMA (some number here), correct?

So DMA is not enabled.
And uninstalling either the drives themselves or the entire IDE doesn't change anything, correct?
Have you tried using a brand new IDE cable?

Both machines? Do you think its possible that the IDE cable on 2 different machines could be defective? And why would the cable end (master) be fully funtional on both but yet only the slave connector was bad? I don't think thats it.
As far as uninstalling and reinstalling, the motherboard was just replaced so both drives were just installed. BUt, to answer your question, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the DVD Rom Drives with no success.
I have never tried uninstalling the entire IDE. Should I give that a go?

In the Device Manager.
Right click on both your DVD drive's and select Uninstall.
Right click on the IDE channel that the DVD drive's were on and select Uninstall.
Reboot and let Windows reinstall the drive and IDE channel.
If that still doesn't work then you need to check your BIOS (Setup) settings.
Reboot your computer. When it starts, it should display what key to press to enter Setup.
It may be F1 or F2 or Delete?
You will only have a second or two to press that key.
Different BIOS have different settings. I can only give an example of mine.
Main screen.
Intergrated Peripherals > Enter.
VIA OnChip IDE Device > Enter.
OnChip IDE Channel 0 Enabled
OnChip IDE Channel 0 Enabled
IDE Prefetch Mode Enabled
Primary Master PIO AUTO
Primary Slave PIO AUTO
Secondary Master PIO AUTO
Secondary Slave PIO AUTO
Primary Master UDMA AUTO
Primary Slave UDMA AUTO
Secondary Master UDMA AUTO
Secondary Slave UDMA AUTO
If any are not set to Auto, select and press Enter and change to Auto.
Press F10 to save and exit.
