Hi Group
I need some general advice regarding the best agp x8 graphics card I can get for 80 quid.

Just looking to get good value for money, games will be played on it but high detail far cry isn't required.

Also how important is direct x9 compatibility?

Not fussed on either ati or nvidia.

Thanks

Dave

80 quid.... what's that in more standard currency? :)
If you're looking for value, go for the Radeon9600/GFX5700. For now DX9 hardware support isnt required and I dont think it will be required until DX10 comes out. DX9 is unlike DX8 where for some games it was an absolute minimum requirement. If you dont have hardware support for DX9, it just doesnt run natively with some of the volumetric stuff (that's pretty much the major differences, volumetric this, dynamic that).

Well for £80 you can get a 256MB ATI SAPPHIRE RADEON 9600. This is a good card which wil meet your requirements. For £100 you can get a better 128MB ATI SAPPHIRE RADEON 9800SE. You should shop around though because prices vary depending on where you shop.

Yes that is the 128bit version. Do you think it is a good price?

Well normally I'd say no but across the lake, prices for you guys are pretty damn high (plus the value-subtracted tax) so I guess it's a decent price. Over here, I could almost fetch a 9800XT for that and easily a 256MB 9800Pro

- The company has made a wrong marketing step giving such names to the cards. Some time ago they also gave a higher index to the weaker RADEON 9000 as compared to the RADEON 8500. Again, the RADEON 9600 PRO is weaker than the RADEON 9500 PRO. They shouldn't name the GPU with 8 pipelines as "9500".
- In general, the RADEON 9600 PRO yields to the overclocked GeForce FX 5600, that is why it will definitely lose to the GF FX 5600 Ultra. If the prices are going to be adequate to the speeds, the RADEON 9600 PRO may be in great demand.
- RADEON 9600 looks much weaker than the GeForce FX 5600, and everything will depend on the prices.
- It could be much better if the RADEON 9600 was put into the Low-End sector, and the RADEON 9600 PRO into the low Middle-End, and if the cards had indices lower than 9500; the RADEON 9500 PRO would remain in the upper Middle-End sector. However, there are RADEON 9000/9200/9100 models take the lower niche, and the 9600 has no room to step in. It's a pity because ATI has no DX9 cards of the Low-End class.
- The price will solve the fight against the GeForce FX 5600/Ultra. If the RADEON 9600 PRO is cheap enough (sub $200), it will succeed.
Damn i hate it when companies get stupid with their naming conventions

Thats not too bad a price for the 128MB Pro, up here they're around $240-$260 CAD if you know where to look (roughly $180-$195 USD)
