I finally figured out why my backup movies won't work

For those of you who saw my post in the Newbie Formum about trying to get my backup movies to work in my Toshiba SD-2200, here's what's been happening. It turns out that all this time, my player was actually a Toshiba SD-3109, which actually isn't a big difference, since both players have about the same compatibility with media. Anyway, I looked on videohelp.com for my correct model number and found out tons of new info. It turns out that I can get a firmware update on my Toshiba player to make it read DVD-R's. That's one choice. Another is to just buy a new standalone that can play all discs.

The most interesting thing I found out was how to change the bitsettings on the disc you're writing to. Apparently, if you can have your DVD writer change the bitsettings to DVD-ROM at the beginning of the disc (also known as the DVD's booktype), your standalone player will think it's just a regular DVD movie, and will always play it. How great would that be! Now, so far I've only been able to play one DVD+R on my Toshiba SD-3109, and it turns out that that DVD+R has a book type of DVD-ROM. My friend burned it on his laptop. So apparently, that burner can change the bitsettings. My burner, an NEC 2510A, at this point, cannot. Does anyone know if there is a firmware update available for this drive that will allow us to change the bitsettings? That would ultimately fix all my problems, and save me from either having to update my Toshiba's firmware, or having to buy a new standalone player.
