MP3 and WMA playback problems please help!!

When i select a mp3 file or wma audio file to play windows media player opens but it just says "opening media" for ages and then it stops responding. I have tryed reinstalling my codecs with no sucess. The problem started when i installed OpenMG sonys net mini disc software, i have uninstalled the software but i think the software has left something on my computer that is causing this problem.
Please any suggestions no matter how far out, i am going to wipe my computer if i cannot solve it soon.
