I will buy a laptop and i have the option to put an internal DVD-RW or leave it as a dvd rom and buy an enclosure with a dvd-rw dual layer 8x (firewire or USB2). Is there alot of problems with external dvd-rw?
or are they slower than internal in burning DVDs??

I was going throught the samae problem a while back i think speed wize it just depends on which one you buy and when i was researching and asking around i found that externals break down faster but it prety much doesnt matter if your going to get the warranty which i highly suggest you do because i ve used mine 2 times already it's definatly worth it. Like the fries warranty if they cant fix it you get a new one thatsalways nice

I suggest getting an internal, there are less chances of having a problem with internal devices than external, and internal are generaly more efficent.

If I had a choice I would go for external, just for the sake of me being able to plug it into my laptop, main PC, server PC or my mate's PC.

I would prefer to have my current Pioneer A07 as an external, but the cost is just too high to warrant that particular luxury.

I can't see that you would experience more/less problems with an external compared to an internal, stuff these days is generally fairly well built ;)

If you go with the external, make sure its going into USB 2. It will still be slightly slower than internal mounted but will work Ok. External drives are somewhat harder to flash firmware to also.
