I'm trying to help a friend who bought a new system (specs bellow) and I ran into problems using Xcopy and other progs. For instance when I used Xcopy at 8x (media - 8x memorex) the movie (Donnie Brasco and others) started to show low quality, freezing and pixelation at the middle of the movie. I tried 4x and it got somewhat better, but same problems show toward last quarter of the movie. I wonder if using 1x or 2x will be beneficial.

By the way, I tried 1Click with similar results, and even Shrink gave me hard time. Interestingly enough I tried Shrink in conjunction with Nero and copying at 2x produced good results. I wonder if this is the answer to my question, and if you - good people - are copying at 2x or 3x but not at 8x or higher.

I have to say that although it's a new system I encounter lots of error messages and I still need to call tech support (Systemax) and see what caused them. Is it possible that it's the reason for poor copies?

By the way, what's the best prog to use *if* I want to keep the menus?

-------
System:
OS - Win XP Pro
Intel 3.2mgh
DVD writer - Sony DW-U18A
Mem - 1GB
200 GB HD

Memorex is known for being questionable quality. Some people have no problems with them, and others have nothing but problems. The problem is that Memorex buys their media from several different sources. Sometimes it's fine and sometimes it's complete crap. You should try using higher quality media like Ritek Grade A or branded Verbatim (meaning Verbatim is printed on the disc) and you should be able to burn at full speed. Using a slower speed may also take care of the problem, but low quality media can give you problems at any speed because the problem is uneven dye distribution on the disc (especially at the outside edge). Since the dye is what the data is burned to, if there isn't enough dye to burn the data into, you'll get errors at any speed.

Is there a way to force the speed down from 8x to 4x using?
I know that Nero will allow me to set the speed but what about other progs, like Xcopy etc?
