im currently using a PC with the foll specs:

- TYAN Trinty 400 (133 MHz bus speed & support for sock 1 and 370 proc)
- P3 667MHz proc
- 320 SDRAM memo
- ATI RV100 32MB video card

im thinking of upgrading to Celeron 2.0 GHz,to 256 MB DDR,128 MB video card, ASUS P4VP mobo..but im constrained with a budget of only $200.

i use this PC for word processing, web surfing(usually generates an error of low resources f multiple browers are open),some light gaming, C++ programming and basic Adobe Photoshop editing.

cud i stil use my mobo for the said Celeron proc..which ones could i retain & what shud be my proirity for upgrade?

1. Dont think you'll be able to get what you want for $200 considering you'll need new mobo, proc and memory.
2. For $200 i'd check out those "small computer stores? ... usually they have upgrade deals where you trade in your system for a ridiculously low price they turn it around and give you something new.
3. If you are absolutely constrained to that budget .... i'd try and hunt down an AMD system (or preferably an upgrade package).

Option 01
- AMD AthlonXP 2200+ (ThoroughbredA) - $75USD
- ECS L7S7A2 - $68USD
- 256MB PC2100 - $55USD

Option 02
At least at the store i frequent there?s a combo option available
- ECS L7VMM3 + XP3100 (prolly just an XP2400 OC?d ... I?d reccomend you downclock it back to stock unless you want to buy a cooler) - $100USD
- 512MB PC2700 - $100USD

I had that same Tyan Trinity 400 board about 4 years ago. I scrapped it a year later and got the Asus CUSL2-C mobo with a 1GP processor. Both boards are sitting on the shelf right now. They were both good, but the need for speed caused me upgrade even further. I now have 2 P4 systems.

I would bet that you will have to update your power supply, also, to one that supports P4 mobos.

Yes, the video card update should be done. Aside from that, you are on the low end for burning DVD movies. You do need an upgraded system. What you mentioned that you wanted to do, in your first post was good, but there is no way possible to do it for $200.

Praetor has some good recommendations, except no vid card is included in his components list. Start with one of his options and add a better vid card when you can. You still need to add about $65, or so, now, to get a GOOD 400+W power supply. One that is for a P4

Score one for stupidity. I was too busy trying to squeeze the damn thing under $200 I .... left out... the video card LOL

1. If he's running an AMD setup a P4 PSU isnt requried. 'sides P4 is too expensive. Celeron is too low performance
2. Unless you really start messing around, "stock" PSUs are good enough for most people ... its only when you start pushin your machine that it becomes a concern... sides with a minimalistic budget like that ... a stock PSU is more than adequate

Yeah that should do the trick. :)

as of this moment, there isnt an AMD proc availble around here, only Celeron 2.0GHz for $73 and higher and P4 2.26 for $140(whch i obviously cant afford for now)

is it still worth upgrading my P3 667Mhz system to accomodate a Celeron proc since as u say that Celeron has too low performance..or shud i consider retaining my P3

i really appreciate ur help guys

Seriously i dunno, it's your call. Bang for buck with budget-considerations leads to AMD but the Celeron isnt BAD per-se... its just the upgrade will not last forever. As far as you are concerned you wil notice a performance increase when i upgrade regardless however
