Let's say your original DVD is damaged, doesn't play right anymore. Hopefully it's ok for the owner to make a copy of the copy he made at the time, in case he'd lose this copy as well...
Having said that - I tried to make a copy of copy (I own the original) just to see if it's working. As I posted at another thread ("DVD speed too high?") I wasn't successful doing so. Some good people suggested that the copy is corrupted, low quality disc, etc. Now I tried another copy (as I said, I own the original) and again Shrink stopped cold midway to the end ("DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue, etc"). This time it's another disc manufacture (Memorex) and I wonder what's going on.
Any idea?
PS: When and who decides that a thread reached its useful life and it's time to close?
In my last posting here I was talking about a different movie. A movie I own and a copy I made of this movie. I wanted to know if it's possible (and legal) to make a copy of a copy which I own in the first place. Long story short - I managed to do it and the case is closed.
As to your (friendly?) warning - I'm packing a few sandwiches and going underground...
Did you say Memorex? They are at the bottom of the pile quality-wise. You really need to get something like Ritek G04 if you're serious about backing up your DVD's. You will have all kinds of problems until you do. To really understand this, research some threads here. Time and again people have problems with low grade media, only to find that Ritek solved their "weird" problems.
Also...do I understand that you are trying to copy a Shrink file by running it through Shrink again?
Also, about thread life. Unless there is some kind of rule violation, a thread stays alive as long as it is useful. A lot of times individual problems get resolved, and thus it reaches a natural conclusion.
I have the same copy of a copy problem as well. I think it has something to do with the media, or a combination of media and burner. I have a LiteOn LDW-411S DVD +/- writer and I used Traxdata DVD+R's with RICOH mediacodes. I thought RICOH is considered very reliable ?!?
Read more about this problem in this thread: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/86468 I also found a kind of solution (which works for me) for backing up a copy.
Shrink v.3.2 is a good program. It is comparable to all retail transcoders - including Recode 2 - at lower compression ratios. When you get into large files like LOTR II and III, you will likely see differences. Differences become even more dramatic with some of the older classics that used difference filming techniques. Ben Hur is a good example. I found Shrink had a problemw with it. Shrink 3.2 is very new though, and the jury is still out on where all of this will shake out about who has the best transcoder at the higher compression levels. I personally use DVD-RB/CCE to get the best quality possible.
