Hi,
Last night I was doing my rip of a movie, and it took me 1 hr 6 minutes to rip, does that seem overly long to anyone else, or is the the expected
time this process should take.

Here are the specs on the pc I am using:

Win2000 SP1
256 meg Ram
Dell Workstation PWS420
x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 6
AT/AT Compatible

Plent of HD space as well.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks - Aaron

HI assron, Welcome to AD. Here are a couple of things to check. The rip times depends on several things. First go into device manager and make sure your drives and IDE channels are set for DMA not PIO. Next if you are ripping with your burner, it may be locked at a 2x rip speed. Most are and need a hacked firmware to unlock the speed. My Pioneer 106 was locked at 2x. After I installed the hacked firmware it goes as high as 12x rip speed. You can download DVDinfopro or use Nero to check the rip speed. Also the best setup is to have the burner drive as master on the second IDE channel not as slave. Check these items out and see if this helps.
http://www.dvdinfopro.com for the tool.
http://www.rpc1.com for hacked firmware.
Good Luck.

assron, the time it takes for DVD Shrink to do its job depends highly on what job you give it. ;)

Was it a straight rip, using "No Compression"?
Did you use compression, and, if yes, how much?
How big the title/s you ripped was/were?

When no compression is applied, DVD Shrink has been found to be as fast as DVD Decrypter (give or take a few seconds).
The more compression used and/or the bigger the title(s) is, the lengthier the process.
The faster your processor, the faster DVD Shrink will work.
etc etc

assron,

The time factor may also be memory related. W2K takes about 110MB of your 256MB. Analyzing and encoding in Shrink regularly use 130 to 160 MB of physical RAM. Background programs add to the load, and so I suspect that you are bottoming out. Some users even freeze with 256MB.

You should also check your page file/virtual memory. Make sure Windows is not managing it for you. It will fragment the drive, and slow it down. I would suggest a value of at least 2000 MB for any video encoding. Set the min and max to the same value.

I would also suggest checking your CPU and memory usage while encoding. Do Ctrl-Alt-Del >>Task Manager>>Performance. It is typical to use 100% CPU during analyzing and encoding along with 130MB to 160MB memory usage. If your CPU usage is lower than the 100%, it may be slowing down due to heat, and this would likely be because of a poor heatsink bond. The slow CPU would also cause longer encode times.
