I have recently captured my videos from miniDV (from my digital camcorder) with Pinnacle Studio 9, which converts them to large AVI files. Then, I converted some of these AVI files to MPEG2 DVDvideo format (7000-9000Kbps). When I tried to burn these MPEG2 files to a DVD (as a data backup file of these MPEG2's) happened the following:

The MPEG2 file I wanted to burn was 4.3GB of length and was composed of many video scenes (as captured in the Pinnacle Studio 9). It was burnt normally on a DVD, but when I played it back on the DVD-ROM player only the first scene of the video (only 30 seconds that was the 1st of about 50 scenes with duration of 40 minutes) was played! That is, the whole video was not able to be played, except from the 1st video scene!

I tried to burn this MPEG2 file many many times, through different DVD-r and DVD+R media, even I re-captured the video...but the same problem!

I wonder if there is problem due to the fact that the MPEG2 file is large (4.3GB), but I think this shouldn't be the case. I run WinXP Pro (NTFS), P4 2.4GHz, 512MB etc...

Some help, please!!!!!

First of all, don't use Pinnacle to convert to DVD format. Use a dedicated MPEG encoder such as TMPGEnc.

Secondly, I don't see anywhere that you AUTHORED the DVD. Try using TMPGEnc DVD Author or DVD-Lab.

It's nothing to do with your file size or your hardware.

Absolutely whassap,

I just use my capture/editing programs to capture with and once I get the stuff edited I just send it to my HDD. Once there, I use TMPGEnc source creator (the cheap one) to convert to mpeg 2. I set it to Demux so I have seperate audio and video streams. The next thing I do is author the demuxed mpeg in DVD-Lab, adding a menu. That outputs a DVD-Video compliant VIDEO_TS folder that I burn using Nero.

Works every time!

totos, your mpeg files can be burned as a data disc if you just want them as a backup. I have never done it, however I don't see why it would not work unless the mpeg or the blank disc has something wrong with it. I think I would try using a DVD RW, possibly two of them.

Thanks a lot guys.

I will have to try TMPEnc to see if this procudes better results for me.

Bear in mind that at this point I dont want to author a DVD, I want just a backup of my video footage from the miniDV casetes to a DVD (so that I empty the casetes and have them available for a new video footage with my digital camcorder).

Authoring is not a problem for me. So I will see if this program does the trick. I hope this is easy to use, not complicated - all I want is to convert the video I captured with Pinnacle Studio 9 (AVI) to MPEG2 format. Thats what I did with Pinnacle but unfortunately when I tried to pass it on the DVD, only the first scene of the video was played back, that is useless.

I will try it and tell you the results. Do you think that capturing the video from the MiniDV with Pinnacle is OK, or should try this as well with TMPEnc?

Thanks again!

Something more...

Initially, when I had converted the AVI to a MPEG2 file on my hard disk, I hadnt a problem playing it back from the HD (it was normally playing).

But when I burn this MPEG2 to a DVD (as a simple data backup to a DVD) then I can play back only the first scene of the video... I have tried numerous DVD-Rs of different brands...but in vein

the only reason I Demux my audio and video is for DVD Lab. That is just the format it works best with. Your audio is mixed in with the DV .AVI, demultiplexing just seperates it into two streams. That lets you process them seperatly in your editing/authoring program.
You don't want to do that if you are going to record the mpeg as a data disc.
I've got some small DV clips so I will try making a data disc and see what happens.

Ok, no problem making a mpeg data disc with Nero.

This is what I did:

First I captured a few minutes of footage from my camcorder. I used Premiere Pro because it has my favorite capturing tools. Pinnacle should work just fine for this as well. TMPGEnc can't capture. At least the version I have doesn't.

I sent the DV .AVI to a folder on my HDD.

Next I opened TMPGEnc source creator and converted the .AVI to a mpeg, sending the output to another folder.

Next, I opened Nero StartSmart and selected "make a data DVD". I then browsed for the mpeg folder and burned it to a DVD +RW after doing a quick erase.

When that was done I opened the disc with Windows media player and watched the clip, I watched it again using Nero Showtime. PowerDVD would not play the files on the disc.

I did not change any settings other than when I burned the disc I did not choose the multi-session option.

My advise is to try burning a small clip first. Once that works then try doing your big files.

Thanks very much for your help fasfrank!

Basically I find Pinnacle a bit faster for encoding! Also I tried TMPGEnc, and I was very happy overall with its interface and wizard, but when I encoded a small AVI to MPEG (to test it), the video was presented with some freezing at some points...Not a lot of them, but you dont want this for your Camcorder home video backup.

Finally I found the solution for burning my 4.3 GB MPEG2 file on a DVD without the problem I previously had described: I splitted my video footage into 2 MPEG2 files from the initial AVI (instead of one).

That way it worked! It maight have been a bug or something dont know. Thanks for your help anyway!
