Cross-Over and Patch Cables will look the same, its just a differnt wire configuration at one of the ends compared to the Patch cables.
If you double click on My Network Places
On the left hand side you should see Set-up A home or office network. Click on that.
Then click Next, Next,
Now it says Connection Method. Im assuming that you arnt using a router, so...
On the comptuer with the internet connection select the first option, This Computer connects directly to the internet, and the 2nd option for the other comptuer. (If you have a router, select the 2nd option for both).
Now Comptuer Description and Comptuer Name.
You dont need to have a comptuer description but need a comptuer name. Both comes have to have a DIFFERNT name. Eg Computer1 and Computer2. Then click Next.
Workgroup, Choose a name. Both comptuers must use the same Name, the default is MSHOME.
Click Next, Next again, then Finish.
Do this on both comptuers.
Now you have to share something.
Double click on My Comptuer, now if you want to share the whole C:\, right click on it and select Sharing and Security. Click the Yes i understand.... bit.
Now click Share Folder, then give it a name. eg C
Then if you want to allow the other people on the network to add or change files, click the Allow to Change Files.
You can do the same to the CD-ROM Drives, differnt folders etc, just do the same rightclick, sharing and secuirty etc.
Once you have done both, Restart them both, making sure that you restart the main comptuer (sharing the internet).
Double click My Network Pleaces, then on the left click View Workgroup Comptuers.
Now you should see Computer1 and Comptuer2.
If that doesnt work, its likely that you have bought a patch cable, not a cross-over.
