The dvd I am trying to burn is 7.3 GB. Even after reauthoring with shrink and including only the main movie, the original precentage still reads 50.3%. Damn. Will this look real bad when I am done? Or should I spend the money and get CCE Basic to back up the movie?

There are quite a few folks going the rebuilder route with a lot of success. I'm lazy so I just split my big movies. I think there is a pretty good thread over at "one click transcoding" concerning CCE and rebuilder.

How a compressed movie looks is sooooooo subjective. I saw some tests on some thread here -- some videophiles did tests with Shrink & some others (maybe CCE was there too) and they didn't think much of Shrink. To be honest, the differences that they thought were huge, I thought were barely perceptible and wouldn't curtail my enjoyment of the movie. I respect their opinions, but I just think it's so subjective that you should judge for yourself.

I think if your original DVD has a ton of action, like "The Matrix" or some other action/adventure-type films, then maybe you wouldn't be happy with the results of a high level of compression. But I've gone all the way down to 48-49% in Shrink and have still been satisfied with the results on my 27" and 32" TVs. That's doing a "deep analysis" in Shrink, which takes longer but to me is worth it.

This is just my two cents' worth. Maybe you could try it on a DVD+RW or -RW disc so if you don't like it, (1) you can re-use the disc and (2) you'll know for your future info that high levels of compression aren't satisfactory for you.

Karen H.--Dell Optiplex GX240, P4 1.50ghz, 256mb RAM (yeah, I need more), Windows XP Pro w/SP1, 80gb c: drive (replaced the 20gb c: that crashed), 126gb i: drive, 124gb j: drive, 500gb external hard drive partitioned into k: and l: drives, Sony DDU1621/C1 DVD-ROM to rip/encode, Sony DRX-530UL to burn, new Sony DRX-840U to burn DL discs ... need a new computer to go with it!!

f1drake,

I use DVD Rebuilder & CCE Basic on the very long movies. Most of the time I still use Shrink w/ Decrypter or Nero. I watch mine on 27" and 32" tv's. I'm still happy with my backups using Shrink. And soon the new Shrink will be out, and is suppose to be better :)

And one thing, Rebuilder w/ CCE takes 3-4 hours on my system. Which is why I only use it for the long ones. Hope this helps. Honestly ... fasfranks way is just as good and faster.

At that percentage I think it would look pretty bad with Shrink. Personally, even though I'm a fan of Rebuilder, with that amount of compression I'd probably split it across 2 discs with Shrink.
