hey,

Alright, so after some research and asking some people, I've come up with this set-up for my next computer...please tell me what you think, and if I should change anything.

Processor - Athlon-64 3200+ with 512kb cache
Motherboard - ASUS "K8N-E Deluxe"
Memory - Corsair 1 GB XMS (DDR400, pc-3200)
HDD - 120 GB 7200 RPM with 8mb cache
Graphics card - Radeon 9800 Pro (I can't change this)
Optical drives - lite-on 167 DVD-ROM
Case - Scorpio 668 Full Tower, Aluminum

I think that's about it. What do you guys think? Without including the price for the hdd or the graphics card (I already have these), I got up to a price of $862.97, shipping included.

What do you guys think I should change?

Thanks

I think you're off to a very good start, myself.

The A64's are very respectable processors.

Praetor knows more about AMD/Asus boards so he can probably give you a more informed opinion of your motherboard selection.

Corsair is great memory and a GB of it is even better.

Nice big hard drive, 8MB cache is great.

The 9800 Pro is a great card, I've been extremely happy with mine.

As far as I'm concerned, Lite-On makes the best DVD ROMs to be had.

That case should give you plenty of room for extra drives and so forth as well as plenty of fans for good cooling. It is a bit too much "bling bling" for my old self but if suits your tastes then stick with it :)

Any plans for a burner?

The mobo you've got there is the Socket754 ... make sure your proc is a Socket754 one. Of course, you might be interested to know that the Socket754s have been phased out by AMD in favor of the Socket939 chips. I have a similar setup in the Official Budget Conscious Computer thread with a Socket939 for a bit more than you've spec'd there :)

All in all, a VERY good job matching parts and prices. :)

haha yes! I can finally match parts now, thanks for all the help.

And yes, my processor is a socket754

I think I'll just go with the socket754s until my processor becomes the bottleneck, which should take a while. By then, I'll throw out my socket 754 proc&mobo and get a set of 939s.

Thanks :)

EDIT: If I do get a burner, which one should I get? I don't think I can spend too much money on one though...
