I have a Sony DRU500A burner and using Nero6 v-6.3.1.17, trying to copy a DVD Video and have been getting a PMA update failure? What does this mean? I have removed Nero and reinstalled it. My burner has the lastest driver. Before I took my burner out of my computer and smash it I thought I would check first if anyone else has encountered this error and found a work around.

Hello, I have same problem. I just bought LG GSA-4120B burner and I could finish only 2 DVDs (Memorex). All other ended with "PMA update failure".
Can anybody explain why ?
My configuration : AMD Barton 2500+, MB K7 Nforce2, Maxtor 120 GB, 512 MB RAM, DVD-ROM Toshiba

Program Memory Area Update Failure

Are you doing anything with your PC while you are burning? Like listening to music, surfing the web , and so on ? Do you have a lot of applications running in the background ?
Nero is telling you your PC is not feeding the data for the burn . Defragmenting your drive, closing other applications ,using good media and going for a coffee while the burn is in progress may solve your problem !

I do know that if your burning, not to do anything else on the computer. The computer take alot of your resources when burning. I usually do control-alt-delete (task manager) and end other programs like a firewall program or other that would use a lot of resources (no system running files). I'm pretty knowledgable when it comes to this kind of stuff, but nobody seems to know why I still get the errors. Some of the problems comes from the type of media I use. I've found that my Sony burner only works with Sony or Memorex DVD-R's. It wont use anything else. Now when using Memorex its working 1 out of 4-5 times. I have not done a defrag lately but I will run one now, then try and burn a backup movie that's on my HD. I will post another thread with my results. Thankx for the input.

Nope, Defraged both drives and still getting the stupid Nero error. Could be a hardware issue.

I'm running into the same error with my Sony DRU 700A.
If It's a hardware issue it's more likely going to be an issue with the RAM chips. I'll be able to ascertain if this is it tomorrow when I get a new RAM chip that I ordered to resolve a different issue. Another possibility that seems to have come up quite frequently on other forums is the media, but I have some reservations about that theory because I have two spools of the same brand and almost all of the media on the first spool burned just fine. Now I'm having problems with 2/3 of the disks I've used.
The PMA Update Error doesn't occur because of Nero's inability to keep the buffer full. That's a Buffer Underrun error. Those are much more rare now thanks to technologies such as Smart-BURN. A PMA Update error, or Program Memory Area Update Error, occurs when the CD or DVD tries to close off the session but can't write the updated TOC information to the Program Memory Area.
That being said, however, I have absolutely no idea how to prevent it.

Have you thought of updating your Nero to .20?

Those who are having this issue, can you provide a copy of the Nero Log file from the failed write attempt?

Edit the Log file before posting so as not to show your Nero serial key of course. :-)

The PMA area is the 'Program Memory Area' on the media. When you begin writing to a disc, in Track-At-Once mode the Lead-In is reseverd, but not written too yet as the data has yet to be written to the disc. And the Lead-in contains information as to where the data is located on the disc so that it can be retrieved later when you go to read the disc.

Till the Lead-In is written, this information is contained in the PMA on the disc. There is a limited number of times that you can write to the PMA, but you it's impossible to fill that area up before you filled up the disc.

When you are unable to write to the PMA area, it's normally caused by poor media, dust on the optical head, recording software problems, old firmware on the recorder, or a recorde in need of alignment. But 90% of the time its media related.

I went to BestBuy and got a 10 pack of FujiFilm DVD-R 4x and so far no problems. I have heard that some memorex disc are bad. My question is, the disc that I did get the PMA error on, are those bad now?

Possibly.

If you have a colleague with a different model DVD Recorder, I would suggest seeing if they have trouble writing to that media.

At this point I've found out that the type of media with the Sony DVD Writer doesn't have anything to do with error.

You need to set the amount of megs of RAM for Nero to use, your Nero may be set to automatically which may be using to much RAM.

What I did in the Nero Express portion of Nero, I click on the MORE button.

Click on the configure button at the botton of the Nero screen.

This will be bring you to a screen with tabs, select the ULTRABUFFER tab

On the drop down box that indicates METHOD, if this is set to automatic, change it to Manual Configuration, this will allow you to enter the amt of meg to let Nero use. On the Data buffer size box I entered 50 for 50mb.

This worked for me. I think you should try it.

Thanks, I tried that and still didn't work. Then I went to CompUSA and bought a Memorex 8X DVD Burner and you know what, it works, no PMA errors. I got the Memorex True8X Dual Format and it works great. So if anyone is looking into buying a Sony DVD Burner, dont. After all the problems that I've had with that, it's not worth it. Plus the Sony DRU-500A cost me $300 when I bought it two years ago. This new Memorex drive is $110 at any CompUSA plus it comes with the full version of Nero 6 System Suite which that software alone runs $100. Thank for everyones input, it was a hardware issue.

I have a Sony DRU-500A and a Sony DRU-700A. I was running into the same issue (see my earlier posts), but I recently found that when I don't use the Nero Smart Start to launch Nero Burning ROM then I don't run into the issue. I've tried Princo, Sonic and Matrix DVD-Rs and the media doesn't seem to make any difference at all. If, however, I launch SmartStart first, I seem to run into the issue almost every time.

Never heard of that, but you know I thought it was just a program issue at first and even tried burning with other burning softwares and still got the error. Come to find out it was my burner. It doesn't matter on the media but now it will only burn memorex DVD-RW not any DVD-R's. Well if anyone has a Sony burner, switch now. PS, the Sony tech support could not figure out my problem.
