3DS XL and R4 SDHC Dual-Core

Hello All
I have purchased a 3ds xl with firmware 4.4.0 and a R4 sdhc dual core and downloaded the latest software. The cartridge loads fine and will play NDS games fine but i cannot get it to load a 3ds rom. Can someone please point me in the right direction and tell me what i am doing wrong?
