Hi all. OK, I've been doing this for awhile now, and this is my first post in the advanced forum, hopefully it goes here.

I've taken the advice of lots of you and regularly defragment my hard drive f: which contains my video files. I did it today and it defragmented without a problem. Immediately afterward, I backed up a DVD using Shrink. That's ALL I've done on f: since the defragmentation. Out of curiosity, since lately it seems like my f: drive gets fragmented very frequently, I went back to look at the defragmentation report AFTER I backed up this one DVD. While the analysis told me I don't need to defrag the drive again, the picture I got is bothersome because it shows that the video_ts folder full of files that Shrink just created is very fragmented. Here's the picture (if the system will let me post it):

[well, I tried to insert the picture but it didn't make it ... take my word for it, it's got lots of red lines indicating fragmented files ... BTW how can we add pictures? I did the img thing with brackets but that didn't work -- I was trying to upload from my c: drive but maybe we can't do that?]

My question is, can someone tell me why the first files I add after defragmenting (the .vob, .bup, .ifo files in the video_ts folder) are themselves so fragmented? And second, could this at some point hinder a good burn because the fragments of the files are all over the f: drive? Maybe I'm worrying over nothing, but I can't figure out why the new files are themselves so fragmented. And FYI, I regularly delete files of DVDs I've backed up & "clean sweep" the f: drive.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me understand the logic of this stuff!

Hi,

Windows has a tendency to do a rather sloppy job of placing data on the hard drive which is why defragmentation is needed. To put it another way, if the new files you just put on your hard drive weren't fragmented then you'd never need to defrag again :)

I've never paid close attention, but I suspect Shrink (or Windows) created and deleted temporary files of some sort during the backup. Once a temp file is removed, that space can then be used to write the actual data, causing fragmentation. It also depends on whether you keep your pagefile on the same drive as you backup DVDs to. The pagefile is the biggest source of fragmentation there is. It will become fragmented pretty much immediately whenever you use it. That's why I keep mine on its own partition and set to a static size.

Thanks, Nephilim and Vurbal (although Vurbal, what is a pagefile?). I guess as long as it keeps working, I won't worry about it too much. Just like to understand the logic of all this stuff too. :-)

The pagefile is virtual memory. It stores pages of memory that aren't being used currently to make sure there's enough RAM available. Unless you specify otherwise it will be stored on the C drive (or whatever drive Windows is installed on.
