I've spent a fair amount of time trying to look through the forums and the search mechanism, but I can't seem to find information specific to my problem.
I use DVD Shrink and Nero. I have had much success in the past using these together, but now essentially every time I start a burn process it never gets past the lead-in stage. I am using an emprex 4X burner and Prodisc DVD-r's. I've tried to burn different ripped items to see if it is a problem with the rip for that particular DVD, but I still end up with the same problem. I'm not sure if my writer is finally giving out or if Nero or shrink is having some sort of problem. The resulting coasters have only a thin piece of material written near the center of the disc. The only thing that I can think of that is different is that I had to switch from the matte finish 4X prodiscs to the shiny ones. Otherwise everything was working great before, and now I can't get out of the lead-in. Any advice would really be appreciate!!!

Sounds like faulty media to me.Let me tell you a brief story this may help.I purchased some media once the first two burns were spot on out of a spindle of 25.Then everthing else i tried came up calerbration error on Nero.I tried everything like re format the hard drive and re install Nero + re install the drive.Oh what crazy days they were in the end i tried the media (Dumb i know)Guess what everything worked again.Try another batch of media before you do anyhting else this could be the problem.By the way my supplier currently has a dvd disc sticking out of his head.Iam not saying this is your problem but do the oppisite of me start small then think big.

Hello John,

Thanks for replying. I hope you're right, it was a new spindle that I opened. It's just weird, I always used the prodisc shiny surface discs before and they worked great. Then for some reason in the next batch that I got they only had matte finish so I got those and they worked great. When I ran out of those and borrowed some of a friend's leftover shiny surface discs they suck. A new set of matte finish discs should be arriving early next week so hopefully that will solve the problem. However, in trying to solve this problem I did what you did and tried uninstalling my version of Nero and installing the newest version. When I try to burn a disc (or even simulate a burn) it kicks the blank disc out and says that I need to put blank media in the drive. This is after I had used Nero to confirm that the disc was indeed blank before trying to start the burn process. I don't know if there is some compatability issue with my writer and versions of Nero past 6302 (this is the only version that I've been able to get to work in the past).

I have found a firmware upgrade for my drive but I'm hesitant to use it until I'm certain that it is the only alternative. What do you think? Your advice on trying the matte discs again first is probably the safest thing to do first. Thanks a lot for the advice and shared experience. I really appreciate it. This is a great site and I hope to contribute in anyway I can.

I am experiencing a similar problem and would like to share a story and some information I gathered diving through the forums.
I was experiencing very successful burns using DVDXCopy with a Pioneer dvr 105 burner and Ritek disks at 4x. Transfer from the source DVD was slow though, so I decided to attak my bottleneck, the HDDs. I installed two 7200rpm PATA drives and built a striped array (amoung other tactics irrelevant to this discussion). After reinstalling all software, everything was faster, especially the transfer from original DVD time. But the burner won't burn at 4x anymore! Nero gives me a power calibration error. DVDXcopy just fails bleah bleah bleah. I've used my tried and try Ritek disks --Fail. I've tried other dvd media --failure. I've been pulling my hair out over this. I had one or two random sucesses and can't figure out why. All I can say is that my burner is getting old and when I had my case open for the HDD installs I did air dust everywhere.
Which brings me to the limited info I have found in the forums.
The most frequent cause of burning issues involving power calibration errors seems to be faulty media.
The second most frequent cause of burning issues involving power calibration errors is a beleagured and dying burner.
I might have just blown a dump of dust into the poor thing and need to swab her.
Sorry that's all I have, but I'm still running tests, and still need to remove the drive itself and clean the optic.
One thing I must add, though it may sound stupid and simple. Make sure your optical drives are all operating on UDMA and not PIO mode. For some reason, my DVD-Rom drive was kicked into PIO somewhere through the re-installation process.

Another cause if you have installed extra drives is to make sure you have enough power to run all on your system.

Thanx john179. She's running a 500w power supply, and the power monitor shows all good. I see you have Asus motherboard. I have the A7V266-E and use the Asus Probe utility packaged with it. That power supply is running 4 optical drives, 2 HDDs, 1 floppy, and4 case fans. I didn't know much about power consumption when I bought it, so I set out to over-shoot.

Hi guys, I thought I'd give you an update on my progression on this end.

After I found that the newest version of Nero didn't seem to want to work, I decided to reinstall version 6302 and see what happened. I put one of the shiny surfaced prodiscs in and away she went. Like nothing ever happened! Many burns later it happened again! It never gets through the lead-in. Here's the log in case you're curious.

I'm hoping the problem might be obvious to someone and they might be able to identify whether it's the program, the drive or the media. An interesting point is that I had just burnt a copy of same disc right before the failed attempt to create another copy. This makes me guess that it is most likely the media, not the program or the drive since it just worked 2 minutes before with the same drive, program and files. What do you guys think? I think I'll try and uninstall and reinstall version 6302 again to see if that makes the difference again. I'll let ya know what happens.

And Mister X, your situation sound pretty frustrating as well. My own experience with the Ritek G04 discs was only moderately consistent which is why I tried the Prodiscs. They are supposedly certified by Pioneer and I use DVD Decrypter to identify them and ensure that they are indeed the discs that they are supposed to be. You might want to give them a try just to make sure that it's not a media problem? Just a thought.

I don't want to bash Nero, because it has in the past been a fine burn engine. However, I haven't been happy with Nero 6. Version 5.5.9.19 worked best with all my drives. Also, have you considered other engines such as Prassi PrimoDVD? AS for the disks, I'm taking a trip to Fry's later this week to buy 3 different types so I can get a proper check. In the meantime, the ones I have burn fine at 2x, just won't go at 4x. In the end I think I'll just use the whole experience as an excuse to buy a new DVD burner. I've seen 8x burners on sale for as little as $90, and seeing as I paid nearly $250 for the Pioneer, I don't see how I could cry about that.

I'm having this same EXACT issue.

I've a Lite-on 811s. I bought some Ritek G04's from meritline.com and ever since I've been having burning issues like you described. I'd hate to have the media faulty cause I still have 75 of the things hangin' round...

I experienced the same thing which began when I bought my 8x ritek media online from meritline. Not that I think it was the company or the media that was faulty but that was when the problem started. After receiving much good yet not applicable advice from this forum I reformatted everything, reinstalled all software and went back to the shrink 3.17 and the Nero that cam with my burner Mero OEM. Since then everything is fine including 8x writing capabilities. I have no idea what went wrong or how it was fixed but I do know that it works perfectly now. Just keep on trying trial and error without getting into aspects that you know nothing about. Good luck!!

A SCSI command error about the media ??

Check you ASPI - Have you checked your Aspi layer - if the drivers are not all the same version can create problems see Praetor's site at http://www.hazza.dsl.pipex.com/faq.htm#ASPI for a guide and the file

I hope this helps

PS You may want to check my recent problem and solution at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/102624

90% of the time it's the media. I swear it. . . trust me. If you purchased poor media, slow the burn down for that batch, then switch. I heard the advice from the forums and still explored trial after trial. I know it hurts to spend so much on the media, but if it's bad it's bad. Before reinstals, before firmware updates, before hardware update, try another media!!!

I just wanted to thank everyone that has contributed to this thread. I think that it was indeed a media problem. I think I just ran into a bad batch of some shiny topped prodiscs. I haven't had any problem with the matte surface ones. How much success (if any) have you guys had in returning faulty media? Prodisc supposedly has a 60 day replacement policy. So does this mean that you can send back any discs that have failed (along with a copy of the log I assume) and they'll send you new ones? Do you guys know of anyone who has been successful at doing that and if so what companies are better about it than others? Thanks again for all the advice and input! This site really is great!

I've never tried returning media. Most of the time, I find that if I slow the burn speed down (I know this can be tricky with some software) I'll get more successes than failures. when you're on a budget, it's pretty much a crap-shoot. Going forward, visit the forums for advice/experience with good value media, and when you find a good burner/engine/media cocktail, stick with it.

Thanks Mister_X. So far I think I've come to the same conclusions you have. Once you find something that works consistently stick to it! And if things go wrong, 9 times out of 10 it's the media.
