hi,
i'm using the new v.56 of rebuilder (with cce sp 2.67.00.27) and followed the guide for high quality dvd-9 backups on this forum, however i'm kind of stuck and dont think i've missed a step but maybe... i'm trying to use the one click method and after the phase II encoding started it says creating m2v for vts_01 segment 0 and then the "quality settings" screen for cce pops up and i'm not sure what settings i should use. I was wondering if someone could help me or maybe point me to an appropriate tutorial for setting up cce sp?

(I guess i'm just a little confused because the guide says with the one click method that u just sit back and wait till its done and i have more screens popping up.)

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

So you're getting this screen?

I'm not sure how that would happen. Are you using a trial version or a full one?

yes, that screen. Trial version, would that have something to do with it?

i've noticed if i change a setting or something in this box so i can press OK, then it finishes with this file but then it pops right back up again with the next file.

Are you using EclCCE? If not you can't use the trial version because it doesn't suppport command line mode. EclCCE basically pretends to be a user clicking on the correct options. There's a link to Doom9 in the guide where you can download it and get instructions for setting it up.

Yeah I didn't think that was the problem or it would have just opened and closed without encoding anything. Let's try this. In the Working directory you specified for your project there should be a file called REBUILDER.INF. Open that file in Notepad and copy everything from the beginning of the file until the line before the second line that says [item]. That will be the CCE settings for the first segment. It seems like there's something missing, which doesn't make any sense to me.

Well I feel stupid now. I told you the wrong file. The file I was thinking of was actually REBUILDER.ECL. Sorry for the confusion. Copy the lines from that file and I'll look at it.

Now I'm completely stumped. All the settings for that screen are there just like they should be. I'd recommend starting by uninstalling and reinstalling the trial. If it still does the same thing you should download the trial of CCE SP 2.50 and try that. Let me know if it's working and I'll give it some more thought.

Edit: You should also put DVD-RB into 3-Click mode so you can reuse the same Prepare phase. That way the only time you should need to redo Prepare is if you switch encoder versions so it will be much quicker to find out if it's working.

I guess I was confused when you asked if it was full or trial, I was thinking the difference between the $58 one and the $1900 one, my bad, its not trial but is the basic. Also, earlier after i first posted this thread i actually tried uninstalling it and i installed a trial 2.50 i think and i didnt get the same problem, instead it encoded all the files, or so i thought, and then i got the error about "nothing to do" or something, then i thought maybe i'd did something wrong installing it the first time and i reinstalled the CCE SP and back to the same old problem.

Okay, let's go back to the beginning and I'll try to explain the whole CCE thing ;) If you have the full version of CCE Basic you don't need to use ECLCCE. In fact it's not made to use with Basic because there wouldn't be any point. You just need to go to CCE Options on the Options menu to CCE Basic 2.67+. You also need to make sure that in the setup screen, the path to CCE Basic is set to cct2.exe.

Looking back at the lines you posted from REBUILDER.INF I notice that the line with the CCE version (CCEType=1) is different from mine and I use Basic so it shouldn't be. Also if you look at the top of REBUILDER.ECL you'll see that it says it's for CCE SP. I'd say that's your problem (although I thought it would just tell you it's not an ECL for Basic). Just go to the Options menu and to CCE Options and I bet you'll see that it's not set to use Basic.

The error you got with 2.50 is caused by trying to run CCE directly instead of using ECLCCE and is easily solved, but since you say you have the full version of Basic that's the way to go. IMO you won't get any better results with SP and obviously you paid for it so we want to make sure you can use it.

ah, ok, i'm going to uninstall everything and start from scratch again, :) so could u explain to me about your little comment again about when i should put it in 3 click mode, instead of just 1 click and be done with it. Also i used to use DVD Shrink and my friend turned me to dvd-rb but he tells me he does the dvds in 3668kbps with 5 pass. 1) i dont see that option for 3668 and 2) i read(and i cant remember where now) but a lot of times 1 pass is sufficient and more passes doesnt help depending on the dvd?

There are 3 phases in DVD-RB - Prepare (Analyze, Make D2V and AVS files), Encode, and Rebuild. Unless you switch versions of CCE, the Prepare phase only needs to be done once. You can encode the project as many times as you want after that.

In order to use 5 passes in CCE you have to have CCE SP. Even then, I don't see any point in that many passes. In fact with DVD-RB I'd argue that there it probably won't help to do more than 2. The purpose of more passes is to better distribute the bitrate, which may or may not be helpful for very long video files, but since DVD-RB splits the video into smaller pieces (no bigger than a chapter and often smaller) I don't see any advantage in making more passes. CCE Basic's only VBR mode is 2 pass, so you don't have to worry about it if that's what you're using.

If you want to specify the bitrate you'll have to use a third party add-on like RB-Opt, but keep in mind, DVD-RB sets the bitrate based on the size of a blank DVD. If you raise the bitrate too high it won't fit on a backup, and you can't always get the bitrate you want. You can reduce the quality of extras to improve the quality of the movie, but if you want to raise bitrate there's always a tradeoff.

What I recommend is for you to go through the guide again and get everything set up. Then try encoding and see what happens. If it still doesn't work you may want to go ahead and try a trial version with ECLCCE. If you're going to do that, my guide has a section at the end about it and links to the appropriate thread on Doom9 for downloading and setting up ECLCCE.

actually i did reinstall it last night and got the basic version to work. i think i was just missing the fact about not needing eclcce. :) Sorry for all the confusion and thanks for your help and time.

Whats your opinion on removing DTS? Can you keep DTS and still have a really good quality backup? I really like having surround. :)

I remove DTS, but I don't even have a DTS capable receiver right now and I figure by the time I have one I'll be replacing everything I can with HD-DVDs so it's not an issue for me. If I had a DTS capable receiver I'd probably keep them. The problem isn't whether you have surround since I've never seen a DVD with a DTS track that didn't have a Dolby 5.1 or better track, it's just whether you'll get any benefit from keeping the DTS. I won't so I don't keep it if I'm compressing. It tends to make a significant difference in bitrate.

Glad you've got it working :)

ah, ok, actually i wasnt too informed on the whole audio think i was thinking dts was the surround but i guess there is dolby too.

i backed up this movie and left the 2ch ac3 files off and only kept the dts and 6ch ac3, however when i started the movie i guess the stereo surround was default cause it had audio until i changed it....do u delete or keep the 2ch on yours usually?

I usually get rid of everything except AC3 5ch. The only exception is when the 2 channel stream is the default. I ran across one disc like that and kept both. If you open the disc up in DVD Shrink and look at the list of audio streams for the movie, the one at the top of the list should be the default stream. If you rip with Shrink you can not only remove unwanted audio, but also change the default if you remove the default stream.

To change the default stream I believe you need to highlight the main movie and right click in the Preview window. You'll get a popup with the option to use different streams for the preview, and I believe that's also where you can change the default. Then you can run it through DVD-RB normally.
