How on earth do i speed up my PC?? it is only a year old and it is a laptop. Ive done everythign from convensional to extreme, like changing the regestry. I know that programs saying they speed up your ram, in the end slow your overall performace, down and i have used them before, can anyone tell me what they do to keep their PC running as fast as it was when it was new??

Hi,
Have you reformatted in a while? After a period of time windows will become cluttered from various uninstalls and junk in general.

Basiclly try not to install to maney memory hog softwares and regular checks on its performance.Some extra memory will also speed your pc up a hell of alot.A little memory upgrade will take you along way.

This might be a dumb question.But do you have anything to get rid of spyware,such as adaware,spybot search&destroy etc.?
Spyware can slow your computer down to a crawl if not keeped in check.If the answer is yes, then what nephilim suggested might be the ticket.
Sorry if that was a dumb question.

actually yes, i use spybot 4, as well as ad-aware, i have one spyware which is actually not a piece of spyware, but it is in the regsitry, and lets other spyware into the system without asking my permission. I also have 760 Ram, i loss 008 worth somehow, through transfer i suppose but that is what is available and free to use and i have checked VRAM to make sure that any programs file through the ram sticks instead of using up the precious HD space. I have reformatted 1 day ago, defragged, and checked hard drive for errors, and had them fixed, what ever is going on it isnt some mondain detail! thx for the replies so far though

Stopping performance dropping off is difficult. Best way is to keep track of what you are installing and uninstalling. I always run a utility called Reg Cleaner when I uninstall anything and run a full scan about every two weeks to keep the Registry as small as possible. If you are using lots of large files - with lots of moving/deleting/copying keep the Hard Disk defragged. Try to store anything you want to keep on CD and not on the Hard Drive, that way defragging doesn't take a week to complete.
Watch for software installing at start - things like Virus Software etc - I personally only have Zone Alarm running at start - keep a check on your Startup folder - that's Gold Dust for keeping performance high. Nothing worse than un-needed progs running in the background sapping resources. Only have things running you absolutely have to have running.
Does your PC have shared graphics? If you don't play games you may be able to drop that in the BIOS and free up some RAM - no point in sharing 128Mb to just display a desktop - try dropping it to 16/32Mb.
Just a thought - 760Mb is a bit of a funny ammount - did you upgrade the RAM or is that how it was when purchased? It could be 512Mb+256Mb I suppose. Would have thought if it came with two sticks of RAM it would be 256x2 or 512x2 just for compatibility sake more than anything.
I don't know what I am doing.

the 760 RAM was upped from 2x256 to 1x256 and 1x512, but some how i dont have the full 768 but i have checked and the RAM is working and compatible with what im running, and yes i do use the laptop for games, (Halo, Warcraft, etc) but all games i unistall if i dont use them often. as far as i know everythign is minimal and should allow the pc to run fast, after a fresh reformat it still runs slow, i use quick-restore diska to reformat it is there another way i should do this that is better for the PC?? I am only using 22% of my available 80GB hard drive, and i have a 120GB external that i put lots of stuff on, i like to work on my computer alot that is why i edited registry files, im not afraid to accidentaly delete the computer, cause its all saved, on external, and other discs, but is teh way i reformat a problem?? how should it normally be done without my discs?? though BIOS??, also should i partition the hard drive?? i know that would help if i did, i would do a 60/20 the 20 for games, the 60 for graphics, i am a graphioc designer, in college. Is that also a problem graphic progs taking too much RAM (i mailny use photoshop CS imageready, and illistrator CS because the school daoes too, i also have been sent a full version of newest maya, i think its boot leg so i dunno, are all of these bad for the PC's speed?? The Disk Restore CD is probably an Image of the original Installation from the factory - in theory it should be fine. It all depends what was installed in the O/S before they ship it. Is it that the PC WAS running fast and now isn't - or - is it that you just don't think it is fast enough for your needs? 12 months is a long time in PC's - the technology in that laptop could be 18 months or more old even if the laptop isn't - it may well not be upto the task of running the apps you are using.
I am not a graphic Designer but I assume that PC performance is related to the size of the files you are manipulating.
The only other way - the best way really - to redo a system is with an original Windows install CD and all the latest drivers for everything.
Check that startup folder - Start/Run/Msconfig - how many items are in the startup folder? Pre-Configured PC's tend to have lots of software installed who knows what is lurking in startup.
I don't know what I am doing.

I use a spyware remover such as spybot or ad-aware 6.0 found on www.microsoft.com/spyware and a freeware program called crapcleaner from www.mrbass.org , which clears out temporary files and cookies from the internet. I also clear out spyware programs from my hard drive from the program files.Some spyware program can stay hidden on the hard drive in the program folder.Also try clearing out running programs from start up from clicking run and typing msconfig and clicking the start up tab and unchecking running programs from the startup this will cut the time from boot up. Some of these could be spyware applications.Hope this helps.

This is more of a question here regarding memory but does your pc run better if you install equal amounts of memory.One of my old pc's had 2 x 256mb in it.When i had the chance i switched to one 512mb which seemed to work better.Iam thinking of filling my last memory slot now i have 2 x 512mb already in.So would it be better to put another 512mb in oposed to a 1gb.I have heared it is better to run with equal size sticks of memory is this true.

The biggest problem I have with my own laptop's performance is heat. I can always tell when it's getting hot because it slows down a lot. You may want to try a cooler pad to keep the heat down.

Awesome about the Ram info, i never really considered that the diff sizes might slow it down, and im planning to up to 2x512 soon, so i guess ill find out soon enough, and funny that you should also mentoin but i have purchased a laptop cooler which will be here within a few days, hopefully these will help, and for a questoin posted earlier, i am trying to get my computer back to what it was, it seems to run as fast as my 5 yr old windows 98, but even after a fresh formatting, new start it seems slower not just on boot but on intializing programs, still boggled by it, thx so much for all the help, maybe this thing might get fixed after all

Also i just remember to add this, i have just partitioned the internal HD on the lappy so one partition is 56GB and the other is 20GB, my question is if i remove everythign from the 20Gb like the xp look, i mean change everything to make it look like it is 95 no shadows this and that and everything else will that help speed it up? cause the 20GB is for my gaming i decided it would be better to seperate them for that, any ideas on if its a good thing to do or not for overall performance of the PC??
