Multitasking during video transfer/burn?

Do you guys surf these forums while burning a video in the background? I've read that you shouldn't if you want a quality outcome. The new Plextor 712A says it has an 8MB buffer so that you "can multitask while doing video transfer and not get buffer underrun."
Does this work for you? Anyone tried it much?

I must admit that during the ripping/processing/burning stages I leave the PC completely alone. You can experiment, but you may be inviting danger into the equation.

8MB of buffer is roughly 1 or 2 seconds of burning :)

I completely agree with Brian! I don't touch my pc when its burning. I'm not sure how much, if any, it affects the quality of the burn, but several times I have been unable to bring up Nero from the background after web surfing or whatever. I dont chance it anymore! Luckily I have 4 computers, so its not a big deal for me... :)

Yes, 8Mb of buffer is nothing in the digital video world, therefore is actually quite meaningless....
Some have success in multitasking whilst burning, especially with the hyper thread cpu's and a shit load of ram.......
But as Brian states - inviting danger into the equation...........for the sake of 45min-1hr1/2 it is best to leave her turning her cogs in one direction (even though it has been scientifically proven, women can handle multitasking quite easily...LOL)
I do not multitask, even though I can quite easily - reduces the possibility of errors - prevention is better than cure...........

I'm having some good luck with it so far. Just goofing around to see if the system will do it. Did six full featured recent releases from TEAC Model DV-W58E/DOJ to Plextor 712A/1.03 using DVDXCopy Platinum and TDK 4x media. Total rip-burned time is ~30 minutes. Results are excellent so far while running surf-active IE browser only in background. I've got P4 2.66mhz, with 1G RAM hyperthreading. IDE is cable select between the two drives.
No coasters yet, and picture quality is indistinguishable from original.

i wouldnt recommend it i did however try it and found that when burning the disc trying to access the net at the same time with only 256 meg of DDR RAM caused my pc to express that there wasnt enough physical memory available and then the disc ended up being a coaster.I then upped the ram to 512.Yes you can access the net and listen to music but more errors are starting to show through..

My sytem has plenty of oomph to do it but I, like many others, simply leave the PC alone. The best burn possible is my main goal so a smoke and a coffee pass the time quite nicely whilst burning at 4X :)

I just got this thing up and running yesterday and it is just awesome. I'm running two monitors as well so I had the burn window open on one side and other apps open on the other. I just did a simulated burn to check the performance. When I do an actual burn I'll have other applications closed. Just a good practice in most cases.
I'll have my old PC set up for other applications in a few days. I got this new one because I was having problems running some large editing programs. This one just breezes through Premiere Pro.
I don't recommend anyone to just start opening or running other apps while doing a burn or ripping. If you have enough system overhead it will probably be OK, just don't bitch if it crashes though.
edit:
Just a note, I saved for a year and drive a beat-up truck. The bike is paid for and my racing days are coming to an end. Hard to walk away from something you love with nothing to take its place. I figured I deserved it. Problem now is that it won't fit anywhere. The thing is big! Gotta save up for a new desk next!

Quality crackers and some Havarti cheese do quite niclely :)
Glad you got her up and running Frank! A system like that would be a sublime experience indeed :)

What have you named her - SKYNET
Well thats what it is all about, hard graft and saving up - I bet you're well pleased........
How quick is it with premiere pro, I bet it can handle some REAL LARGE FILES ?

Hi baabaa,
It was fun while it lasted. I'm a bit upset that it is broken and I suppose a few bugs on a new system can be expected, but not the black screen(s) of death.
It would have been different if I had been doing something besides gloating about how great it is and then it crashes while I'm typing!
Got the trusty old Sony up again and "Skynet" back in the box from which it came. That's a great name BTW, but not what I'm calling it right now!
I was having a lot of fun with it yesterday, I had about a dozen or so tracks on top of each other with the opacity going in and out and anything else I could throw at it. Real time rendering was just flawless. It is so nice to get Premiere spread out across two monitors. Gives a person some room to work with.
I'm going to take it back to the folks who built it and get it sorted out. They are a small company that builds a few hundred computers a year and are in my area so I have no doubts they will take care of this.
Skynet will rise again!
Cheers,
Frank

Ok, well after a quick mobo R&R things are working again! While it was in the shop I had them install a nifty cpu temp gauge. it says 338 deg. C. Maybe thats supposed to be 33.8 deg. C.

Last week I was burning a dvd at 8Xspeed in my 107, copying a music cd 'on-the-fly' with my two other drives, printing out dvd covers on two printers and surfing the internet, all at the same time.
Last Sunday I replaced my motherboard.........again!

On my prior system (PIII 256mb) it would cause problems to do anything while ripping or burning a dvd. I have done some test with DVD RW on my new rig and other than slower transfer rates it really has no problems or loss of quality multitasking.

asykew, I noticed a "2.8c @ 3.2" does that mean you have overclocked it?
I was looking around on my computer and found some of the "benchmark" tests whatever that means:
DisplayWidth: 1024
DisplayHeight: 768
DisplayDepth: 32
AntialiasingMode: 0
AntialiasingQuality: 0
AnisotropicFiltering: 4
DetailLevel: 4
AvgFPS: 30.942291
MinFPS: 7.421130
MaxFPS: 112.000000
AvgFPSRender: 37.716312
AvgFPSSimulation: 172.233307
AvgTrianglesPerSecond: 9314023
MinTrianglesPerSecond: 1133464
MaxTrianglesPerSecond: 21946438
AquamarkScoreRender: 3771
AquamarkScoreSimulation: 8611
AquamarkScore: 30942
I have no idea what any of this means. That sure is a lot of triangles though.
I was looking at another computer they were testing. It had two Xeon 3.4 Extremes, 4 GB RAM, All watercooled. Gamer PCs are so cool! Had a radiator with a four fans on top.
