I've got a somewhat antiquated machine:
Processor: pentium 1.3gig
ram: 640MB of pc800 rd ram 400mhz dual channel

my motherboard (400 frontside bus) can support a 2.0 gig pentium.

How big of a difference could I expect to notice if I installed a 2.0?

At some point in the future i'm gonna get new mother board/processor/mem, but that'll be a few years from now, I thought this might make a good quick fix for some speed?

wouldnt make thaat much of a difference, if you pumped up RAM as well then you might get more performance, but your motherboard is restricting.

He's using RDRAM so any upgrades there are going to be very expensive.

I think you'd notice a nice bump going to a 2GHz proc and they're certainly cheap enough these days :)

This is your problem. I'm guessing your running 2-256mb and 1-128mb stick. You need to install them in pairs. When you installed just the one stick of memory you disabled the dual channel. I would first start my getting another stick of 128mb of ram.

Oh sorry :) ... didn't think they make 64mb sticks. What is the max ram you can install?

Well (IMO) I think adding ram would make a big difference. You can either add 2-256 and bring it up to 1GB (which I think you'll notice a big difference) or max it out and get 2-512 sticks.

Before you buy compare what it would cost to add 2-256 sticks and a processor. If it's less or equal to adding 2-512 I would go with the ram + processor. 1GB is alot of ram. Or if you can swing 2-512's and a new processor that's even better :) ... but again that my opinion.
