I thought of buying the faster 8500Mhz, but buying faster RAM hasnt really helped me with my current build (Asus A8N32-SLI-Deluxe, Opteron 185 @2.8, PC3500). I either havent been explained to properly about OC'ing memory, havent cared once I was stable with FSB multipliers, or skipped class that day.

From what I've heard though, that's not common. Crucial may be good with their rebates, but a lot of companies supposedly don't give a monkey's behind.

Hmm, maybe I just haven't had good luck. Although I didn't get my XFX rebates, because it supposedly wasn't in by time. Ok this migh take a little long to explain so I'll summarize.
My rebates were POSTMARKED(which is what it required) two days before the time was up. The lady from the rebate center tries to pull one on me by saying I didn't get it in on time. Later on she admits that it was postmarked on time but they got it later and it entered their suystem too late, even though it only mentioned POSTMARKED date on the rebate form. With all the bullshit they were trying to pull coupled with the fact that it took her on average NINETEEN days per ONE email to respond, I just gave up.
On another note Black Friday electronic deals weren't that great. Although I did buy a nice black shirt, sweater, and hoodie!

I have to admit, MIR are a pain in the a$$ but I am yet to get burned on any and I have sent in a bunch. I get the paperwork all done right after I place the order and as soon as I recieve the merchandise, I cut out the bar code and put it in the preprepared envelope along with the paperwork and mail it the next day.

LP531 ,I would try to talk him into DDR2 memory instead of the pricey DDR3. he could always upgrade later when it came down in price

My sentiments exactly...I just had him buy the DDR2 memory...
The Gigabyte M/B supports...both DDR2 & DDR3...and the Penryn...that is the main reason I went with it...
I added on the HD2600XT OC...because I do not really like the 8500...it was just the cheapest...decent card...I could find...
I figured he might be able to use this PC as a whole house media server...and the HD2600...with an additional Video Capture Card and DVD Drive upgrades...would give him future HD/DVD...Blueray/DVD...and HD-VMD playback capability's...

The HD3870 is better than the 8800GT in my opinion almost all the time, but for Flight Sim X, a single nvidia card is pretty much the only way the game is at all playable at most settings. ATI drivers simply can't handle the game.
Good find there sam. Where did you find the info btw? I searched for a while and got fed up with the nonsense on the game. Obviously my Google skills aren't as good as yours. hehehe. :P

As do I and an AMEN to that. lol. I"ve been lucky so far with respect to MIR and I hope that I continue to be. Right now I"m waiting for about 5 rebates from Cooler Master. :D
Like you fellas I was surprised to see the LACK of real deals from the online retailers but I found a couple at the B&M stores that I frequent. ;)

The only thing burning was my temper when I figured out I didnt turn something in on time. I look at it as an attempt to teach self-discipline.

Antec 900...so that kills any noise issues...LOL..:)
All case fans will be on a controller...so that should help...
The computer is not in his TV room...so noise not really an issue...

Left standard the 900 is mediocre from a noise perspective, because even on low the fans spin too fast. However, it has excellent potential to be quiet because of the number and size of the fans, and using a fan controller can be kept pretty much silent.

They should make a 900 without the window...it would make it quieter...
@Deadrum33
That Armour look like a nice design...a ton of 3.5 drive spaces...using excellent airflow principles...definitely the nicest of the cases suggested...

I disagree, that flies in the face of what makes the 900 what it is. Firstly, unless you put a fan on the side it won't vibrate, and since there'll be no air going through it it won't contribute to the noise produced. Secondly, the front fans are exposed through grilles so are easily audible even if they're quiet fans (which they aren't). There is a modified P182 with a side window and it's hardly any noisier than the regular P182, and the only reason it is noiser is because the hard soundproofing is removed, not for any other reason.

I wasnt sold on the fact that every drive bay cover was the see through mesh, I'm used to solid faceplate on front and see through sides, but I figure I'll just throw some extra blue fans in all that space and light it up. It really was about finding the best deal, not just something new and sexy (yeah right) :P

You forgot about the wonderful acoustic quality of Plexiglas...thats what increases the noise...My wavemaster is significantly quieter without the window...all windows add some noise...
Your right about No window being against the nature of the 900...The case hardly screams...Office PC...LOL...

You say that, but mine's used as a fileserver. Hardly a rip-roaring Mhz eating application for it...

Frank, that board has both DDR2 and DDR3 sockets. They are different sockets so both kinds of memory will work.

Abuzar,
I edited my post to reflect that.
I don't think DDR 3 would ever be needed considering the intent.

After I posted I looked at the ICH9R vs the ICH9 chipset and sure enough, the ICH9R supports both.
I also noticed that the specifications emphasised using only memory from the supported list. The list is fairly large, so it's likely that it will support Lp's friends memory.
BTW, I have all my parts on the way for my Gigabyte AM2+/Phenom build.
I did manage to get a pair of 3870 video cards from Dell (of all places). They should be here before the 12th of December. Did you see the prices jumping up on these? I got mine for $225.00 each.

What a good find on the 3870. I'm glad I'm a few steps from that new system for myself. :)
