The hack involving "setup" entering 2960, etc. isn't working for me with my new ILO DVDR04. Any ideas? Thanks.

The recorder is ok for our needs. Our total use with this DVD is to watch movies (from both USA and France)and to record TV events. The problem is that we cannot be region free so we can play French movies (made in France) with the formula we have used...

... This unit sure looks to be the same as the LiteOn LVW-5001 ... It uses the exact same "region free hack" also ...

When I attempt to hack the DVDR04 everything works until I reach the numbers. At this point as I press the numbers on the remote control, they fail to appear on the screen. (????)

I just picked one up last week. (Ilo DVDR04)
(Lite-ON 5001 made for Walmart. $ 149.00)
Am still testing it. But everything seems ok to me except hum noise from the tuner. And the noise go's up in volume when you start recording. Have read another user had this same problem. Tried Cable and antenna. Not all channels. Can watch same channels on the TV's tuner or the VCR's tuner. (no noise)
Oh yeah, the tuner built into the DVR is mono also.
No noise on the other inputs.
Might return the unit and try another unit.

Yeah I have the same hum noise as described by you. Also don't have a way to change TV type in setup/system menu. Any idea's? Also when timer recording the unit turns on and I can't watch another program on the TV. Do you know of a way to timer record and watch a different channel at the same time? Thanks

Hi.
Not sure what you mean by change tv type. Like 4:3 or 16.9 ?
The device only has one tuner, so it can only receive one channel at a time. You can feed your TV and let it be the tuner to watch another program. That is what I do.
I just picked up another unit and will see if does the same thing. Will also take it apart to check it out.

Hi Dave, There is supposed to be an option to change the TV type from NTSC to PAL in the setup/system menu. Also I hook up the TV via a automatic RF modulator witch when the timer recording comes on it switches the picture to the recording channel. Also have e-mailed Ilo tech support with no response.

... Just got done doing a little resarch on the iLo DVDR04 ... Apparently it is the same unit as the LiteOn LVW-5101 that LiteOn builds for Sam's Club (except for the front face plate)... A friend of mine has gone through 1 of each model and has said that he got a tuner hum from each unit ... Now the LVW-5005 that I have has no tuner hum, but the tuner, like the others, is mono ... I don't use the tuner anyways, so until I tried it out (checking for a hum) I never realized that ... NOTE: Sam's Club sells the LVW-5101 for $139.77 ...

Have you tried recording from the tuner(TV stations)? Does the unit recognize that the dvd+rw is in the drive? You should see the dvd and rw lights on the front panel of the unit lit. When you turn it on the unit reads "hello" and then "reading" and then you see the start screen with Ilo and at the top it will say DVD+RW. If you try to record something with copy protection it will say "copy protected" when you press the record button and will not record.

The unit reconizes the dvd+rw in the display panel.
I tried recording from the tuner, and I saw the picture running on the small screen and again it would not record.
The iLO Support Tech just aswered my email so I am waiting for a reply from him.
Thanks for your help gserve,
Terry.

To: gserve.....I emailed iLo and it took 24 hours but I did get a very informed response...in fact it was iLo that directed me to this site. I still cannot get my DVDR04 to go through the steps to allow zone free DVD playing. I'm taking this unit back to Wal-Mart.

Here is the reply i received from iLO Tech.Connect the coaxial cable to the recorder, which i had already done, then hit the setup button on the remote.
Go to TV tuner to scan channel from tuner.
When you go for recording, you need to hit 'source button untill you see Ch...on the display panel of the recorder.
By this time you should see the picture on the TV as well.
I have no idea what he is talking about when he say's go for recording? when i hit source nothing changes.
I am trying to record from a vcr not from the tuner,
Dose any of this make sence to you guy's?

mclyn82,The hack worked for me,you do not see the #'s on the screen you will see the hidden menu and select region free.Terryeng, when you press the source button you should see at the top of the screen as you press it reading Tv,AV-1 front,AV-2 rear, ilo,DV& S-Video. select AV-2 rear if you hooked up the VCR to the inputs(make sure the VCR is turned on and press the play button on the VCR and you should see the VCR playing the tape you want to record. Then hit the record button on the ilo remote you should see it say recording on the screen. If when you press the source button on the remote and nothing changes make sure the remote works.

Hello All.
I called 1-800-Walmart and they told me where to pick up a Ilo DVDRH04. (the one with the 80G hard drive)
Will test its tuner output and report back if there is hum or not. (the hum is caused by the tuner bleeding in the video carrier into the sound carrier.)
I have an HDTV tuner (Sony HD200) but it will only put out either DVI/component output or S-Out/DCVS (RCA composit) output. Not both. Thus I can not use the tuner for recording. (Unless I wanted to not watch HDTV feeds from the Satellite or OTA) (The next model will.)
So I wish the tuner to work ok.
gserve: Can't find anything on either unit that
allows NTSC/PAL changes.

Hello All.
Got the new unit. Ilo DVDRHD04. 80 Gig hard drive. (Walmart $278.00)
It's tuner is much more quiet. Some hum but only about 20% of what it was on the DVDR04 unit. (which I tried two different units.)
The unit works ok. Recorded a few TV shows on the hard drive and played them back. Video quality looks good. Audio drops out for 1/8 seconds every 10 minutes or so. Some video noise but not too bad.
It's tuner is mono only like the other unit. The front panel ilink (IEEE 1394) port is input only like the other unit.
I could not copy some material from a normal DVD to the units hard drive. (this was stuff I placed on a DVD+R disc that has no copy protection from my computer.) The recorder just says swap the disc. Seems like it can only copy in files that it wrote. The disc has a VIDEO_TS subdirectory and a VIDEO_RM subdirectory.
(I wanted to make some titles etc for a recorded movie.)
MP3's on a DVD work. JPEG's on a DVD work also. Very good quality.
I did the testing with the SP mode. It has the regular modes. (HQ, SP, EP and SLP) which equate to 1,2,4,6 hours of recording time on the DVD or 16,32,64,96 hours on the hard drive.
My computer reads everything the unit wrote.
The hard drive is a Seagate ST3800012ACE.
The DVD drive is a Lite-On DDW-451S (a 4X DVD write speed drive.)
There is a firmware update that I have not yet installed.
If I need to record something nice, I will need to plug in the old VCR with its stereo tuner and feed it in to the recorder via the back side jacks.
Dave
