I had tht happen with some Sony Highspeed discs. I think they were Sony DVD+RW x16, Take a look at what your discs are, and i bet they were an unsupported brand or they were highspeed..... I might be wrong but htat has been my experience... Good Luck.

They have a whole list of brands that dont work. They told me to get the new firmware so I did......That fixed it...for about 4 recordings....now it's back to what it was. I keep wanting to contact them but I jsut don't want to mess with it. They won't answer your questions over the email and they have screwy telephone hours. I was thinking of just trashing it and buying a Panasonic that actually works.

I wont argue with you on that one..... I contacted them about a compatibility list, and they sent one to me, I dont hav eit anymore, but I can tell you that Sony was on the list of unsupported discs..... funny enough they didnt even recommend their own brand of discs..... I thought that was strange.....

But I have marginal success with:

Maxell DVD+RW 4x and some 8x discs.... Never use +R as I have a very low success rate with them.

also Imation DVD+RW 4x..... again never +R... the only problem with the +RW is that I find I have to do a quick 1 min test recording to see if it gets any skips or what ever, sometimes reformatting many times will get you a good recording....

It is a hit or miss with the ILO recorder, but overall, if I do these things I get good recordings and am happy with my results....

Buy what ever brand recorder you want but I think you are going to run into similar issues with any brand, as I said in my previous post about 2 weeks ago..... My mother had a $300 Emerson recorder that just wouldnt work.... she bought the ILO and has nothing but good luck with it..... But again if the ILo doesnt work for you, do what you need to do.... but mine seems to work fine...

Even if my ILO craps out tomorrow, it was well worth the 100.00 price tag, and I would never consider it a waste of money especially since I got nearly 2 years of use out of it.... in fact if that happened I would run right out and buy another one......

I liked the price of the ILO, the only reason I said that the Panasonic would work is because I own one. I have the ILO as a second one. The panasonic was $450, and has worked very well, but for $100 the ILO is a good deal, when it works.

No reason to explain.... you do what you have to do.... if one works better for you than the other, go with it.

I will try to find that compatibility list for everyone to check out....

"The update was also created to help with incompatibility issues with
various disc manufacturers.
In particular, our customers were experiencing problems formatting and
finalizing with Phillips, Maxell, TDK, Memorex brand +R.
Some disc brands that we have received positive reports about are Fujifilm,
Verbatim, Sony, Ridata, Ritek."

Did it do this before or only after you got your new tv.

Are you using the right media like if you were using one brand and you switched go bck too it or the speed of the disk is too fast and the ilo does know the new media 8X on up.

I tried emailing cust. Support and got a post master unable to deliver message notification......I tried again and the same thing happened, so I called the number in the manual.....the operator came on and said that the call couldnt go through. Does ILO exist any more? Walmart quit selling the DVD recorders.....I am quite mad that I cannot call these people...

The Web sites are still there. You can see if you can contact them through a site or if there is different contact info on a site.

DVDR05 - www.iloservice.com

DVDR04 - www.ilohelp.com

No idea why there are different sites for the different models.

I found the message ILO sent me a while back, it appears to be a cookie cutter message, but it might help...
Quote:
Dear Customer,

We do not recommend using Memorex, Maxell, TDK, or Ilo disk! Please also do not use DVD-R/RW disks, these disks are not compatible with our DVD recorders. However you may record with DVD+R/RW disks, these are best to operate with our DVD recorders. Please verify that your other DVD player is able to playback DVD+R/RW disc and that the brand you are buying is compatible with your other DVD player or not.If you go to the "setup" menu, then go to the "help" menu there is a list of compatible media. Such as Sony, Fuji, Verbatim, HP, etc... A firmware update is recommended, download both updates and burn them on to two separate disk as image files. Load into the ilo unit and it should say update on the front of the unit, on the screen it will ask if you really want to update press "yes", it will take about two minutes to update. When it is finished it should say successful.

Thank You,

ilo Customer Service
I also found this message on another forum whith a list of compatible discs... This message was also sent from the ILo support team.

The DVDR05 will record on DVD+R and DVD+RW media. The different brands that have been tested and known to work are the following. This is NOT by all means an exhaustive listing:

* Fuji Film
* Verbatim
* Sony
* Great Quality
* Ricoh
* Ritek
* RiData
* Daxon
* Info Disc
* Intenso
* MBI
* MCC
* Medianca
I have not tested most of these brands as my local Wal Marts dont sell them, but I will look for them and let you know how it went
I can add a couple of brands to the list as I have tested them and have found them to work.....

* maxell 4x
* Imation 4x.

But as I have said before, I dont use DVD+R I use RW, I have never gotten a good recording from a R.

I have no idea if this will work any better than anything else you've tried, but there is a contact form and phone number on www.ilohelp.com . Click on Services on the left and then Tech Support at the top. That will get you to the contact form, which also lists a "24/7 support hotline", 1-866-456-3837. I don't know if that's the same number that's in the manual.

ilohelp.com is supposedly for the DVDR04 instead of the DVDR05, but since I don't see any contact info on iloservice.com ...

That's all I can tell you. I've never tried to contact them myself. Good luck.

I called the number for the 04 models and never got off of hold. I then called my walmart and talked to the manager and he said he would look into the situation. He called me back and said he didn't know what was going on, but he'd give me my money back. I took it back to the store and exchanged it for the Magnavox they have now and it works very well.

Morning all,

Thought I'd share what I've learned about the "ilo DVDR05-***. First off, my unit is a DVDR05-mu1. There are other variations of the unit, but the primary point is that all the ?R05" units I've encountered and/or heard about have the "MODEL DR021C DVD Recorder" as their burner.

Out of the box, the recorder worked well with DVD+RW media of most consumer brands (i.e. Sony, JVC, Memorex, etc.) and store brands (i.e. Office Depot Brand). The few generic brands I tried were more miss that hit. As for the DVD+R media, I started having trouble recording from day 1. One in Four disks would either not format, errored-out on finalization, or could not see previous media recorded to a disk, giving me either a ?Bad Disk? -or- ?Unknown Disk? message. As the faster DVD+RW disks started showing up, I started encountering Format Errors and Bad Disk messages on them, too.

I thought that my machine might be defective, so I contacted Wal-Mart through their web site. They directed me to the following address: http://www.ilohelp.com/ . This site is forthe owners of the ilo DVDR04-*** Models, which used a "LITE-ON DVD Burner". This site does not support the DVDR05-*** Models because a "CyberHome USA DVD Burner" is used in the DVDR05's.

However, this site does give you a direct link to: http://www.iloservice.com/ . This is ilo's official site for the ILO DVDR05 Products. Click on the customer service link, and you?ll be sent to the download center. Choose your product for specific downloads available for your model.

You have three choices: 1) Firmware Upgrade (both Front End & Back End); 2) Product Specs page; and 3) Product Manual. PLEASE NOTE: the only way posted to contact customer service is an e-mail address. My e-mails (4 over a 10 day period - 07/21/2006 -to- 08/01/2006)have yet to be responded to. If you download the ?Product Manual? *.pdf file, you?ll find a customer service ?800" number to contact around page 5 of the manual. I called it, and received a pre-recorded message that the toll-free & e-mail support centers were unavailable at the present time. PLEASE NOTE: On 08/15/2006 I went back to the iloservice web site, only to find that it was no longer available. I?m unsure wether this is temporary or permanent. The ilohelp web site is still active, but is for DVDR04 Model Owners only.

I downloaded the firmware package (Front End: MU1_LOADER_0495.nrg & Back End: DVDR05MU1_610.nrg). These are ?NERO? Disk Images. To use them in other programs (i.e. EZ CD Creator), just change the file extension to *.iso). I created the upgrade cd?s and proceeded to upgrade my DVDR05-mu1 recorder.

Both the DVD+RW Drive & the Player?s Control Chip have to be upgraded. The upgrade must be done in sequence, starting with the Front End (MU1_LOADER_0495.nrg) disk. This upgrades the DVD Burner. The instructions are as follows:

Loader "Front end" Update v049s

1. Insert the firmware update disc into the unit

2. Once the disc loads a question box will appear asking "Do you want to update this loader?" Select yes and press enter.

3. A message box will appear stating "System Firmware is being updated." Please wait about 1 minute and do not turn off the unit during this time.

4. After the update is complete the tray will eject and the message box will state "Update Success." Remove the disc from the tray and power off the unit.

5. Next, power on the unit. Factory defaults are automatically restored. Press SETUP, select the GENERAL menu and scroll down to VERSION to verify that the system firmware has updated. Under SERVO you should see version number "DX...049s?.

Next, use the Back End (DVDR05MU1_610.nrg) disk. This upgrades the control chip. The instructions are as follows:

Firmware Instructions: Platform v610 Update

1. Insert the firmware update disc into the unit

2. Once the disc loads a question box will appear saying, ?This firmware may not be compatible with this player. Do you want to update this platform?" Select YES and press enter.

(Don?t be afraid that you?ll screw something up! I?ll explain below.)

3. A message box will appear stating "System Firmware is being updated." Please wait and do not turn off the unit during this time. As the upgrade begins, you?ll see a progress meter. It will stop at 5%, and stay there for at least 2 minutes or more. This is normal. The entire upgrade takes about 4 to 5 minutes to complete.

4. After the update is complete the tray will eject and the message box will state "Update Success." Remove the disc from the tray and power off the unit.

5. Next, power on the unit, press SETUP, select the GENERAL menu and scroll down to USER DEFAULTS. Select yes and press enter to restore the unit to factory defaults.

6. Scroll up to VERSION to verify that the system firmware has updated. Under CONTROL you should see version number"DVR...610"

When I got to the second part of the upgrade, I freaked at the ?Incompatible Message?. Why? Because on the iloservice web site?s FAQ, it says that you must speak with a customer service rep before affecting a firmware upgrade. Not doing so will void your warranty. However, on the same page, it tells you that if you experience problems with disk errors, that you should immediately upgrade to the newest firmware package to correct the problem. Then, there?s no way to speak with a rep, as all customer service channels are unavailable! So, I stopped right there. When I restarted the player, everything appeared to be normal. But after a few recording attempts, most of the recorded Title showed that it had been broken into 99 chapters. The time indexing was all wrong & the disk skipped all over the place, or just froze up.

That?s when I started my own web research. I found several references to the Burner in question (Model DR021C), and that it is made by ?CyberHome USA? ( http://www.cyberhome.com/ ), and used in their recorder (Model No. DVR1600-MU1). I contacted them regarding the ?ilo burner in the DVDR05 models, and they confirmed that they are the maker of this DVD Recorder. I was told that the ?Incompatibility Message? generated by the ?ilo recorder? was caused by the firmware not recognizing the ilo control chip as a CyberHome component. But, not to worry, the control chips were the same, and that the upgrade would correct the Title/Chapter/Timing issues I was experiencing.

Armed with this knowledge, I continued with the Back End upgrade. Upon restart, all was right with the world. Since then, I have yet to have either a DVD+R -or- DVD+RW disk error out on me (a total of 23 burns at four different speeds: HQ; SP; LP; & EP). If you go to this link:

http://support.cyberhome.com/support_web.nsf/$$Search2?OpenForm&P...

you will find links to the firmware upgrades, as well as other info regarding the recorder, as the DVR 1600MU1
and the ilo DVDR05-MU1 are basically the same unit.

IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT CYBERHOME USA WILL NOT OFFER ANY TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE REGARDING THE ILO DVDR05 PRODUCTS! USE OF THEIR SITE FOR ANY PRODUCT OTHER THAN THEIR OWN IS STRICTLY AT YOUR OWN RISK!

If you have disks which you had media on, but lost it due to error, they have a link to ?IsoBuster 1.9.1, CD and DVD data recovery software ( http://www.smart-projects.net/isobuster.htm ). So far I?ve been able to retrieve every file found on these unreadable disks to my hard drive. I also use DVD Decrypter for ripping media from non-damaged/errored disks, and have had great success with it.

I?ve seen references to the usage of DVD-R / -RW media, but can?t comment on this as I?ve never tried it.

Hope this helps someone.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE "ilo DVDR05-***" Player/Recorder

Howdy,

Here's some additional info about the DVDR05 firmware upgrades that slipped my mind during my 4 a.m. PDT Post.

The most important things to remember in the upgrade process is to: 1) never turn the unit off during the upgrade; 2) to make sure that the unit completely shuts down after a successful upgrade; and 3) that the upgrades are applied in the proper order. FAILURE TO ENSURE THESE THREE (3) THINGS WILL RESULT IN A FAULTY UPGRADE, EVEN IF YOU RECEIVE THE SUCCESSFUL UPGRADE MESSAGE AT THE END OF BOTH THE FRONT END & BACK END STAGES.

In both the Front & Back End installs, once the upgrade is finished, the disk drawer opens. Make sure you remove the disk before pressing the <Enter> key on your remote, which should close the drawer & turn off the machine by it's self. It should also restart it's self, and, after a moment, say "No Disk".

If the unit does not restart it's self within a minute after powering down, disconnect the power cord from the back of the machine, wait about one (1) minute, then plug the power cord back into the unit. When the LED Screen lights up and shows the time, press the <Power> button (either machine or by remote) and wait for the unit to reboot. Once the screen shows the "NO DISK" message, then continue as per the posted instructions.

HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS! If you screw up either part of the upgrade, all you have to do is start over at the beginning, and do it all again. This will overwrite the bad install with the corrected information. I know. I had to do it twice myself!

In my first post, I said that the "CyberHome USA DVR1600-mu1" and the "ilo DVDR05-mu1" player/recorders were basically the same. To clarify this statement, both of these units use the same DVD+RW Burner (manufactured by CyberHome USA) and the same "control chip set". Therefore, the firmware upgrades apply to & work on both units. As for appearances, abilities, sound options, etc..., they are two completely different machines. Also, "CyberHome USA DOES NOT manufacture the "ilo Player/Recorder". They only make the DVD Burner that is used in the "ilo DVDR05" units.

Finally, you will notice that the ?Boot-Up? and ?Set Up? screens have changed. They now say ?CyberHome? on them. This will only happen if you use the upgrades available on the ?CyberHome USA? web site. Those that were available on the ?iloservice? website retained the generic blue ?DVD? screen on boot-up & in set-up. However, with ilo?s web site down, I don?t know where you would find the upgrades previously offered on that site. I?ll keep checking it and make a post should it come back on-line.

Once again, Good Luck!

I ran into the common problem of the disc-tray not opening. After unplugging it and then plugging it back in I got a high pitched noise which also caused disruption to the picture on the TV set. Since the DVDR05 is over a year old, I took the cover off and the noice comes directly from the power supply circuit-board. Also there is not any lights or anything else coming on. Sounds like it could of overheated, but nothing was on top of it.

Anyone know if the DVDR can be removed from the unit and somehow put into a PC?

I bought 2 of the ilo RO5ZU model. I can't even begin to list all the problems. Between the two of them, it's been a circus. You just never know what these recorders are going to do next. I tried to work with ilo support, but they no longer answer their phone and e-mails come back with a statement saying that e-mail support is no longer available. I reported them to the Better Business Bureau for failure to honor their warranty. I encourage eveyone with problems getting ilo to respond to requests for service to report them to the BBB as well. Ilo actually told the BBB that they credited my credit card for a full refund on both recorders. Ilo doesn't even HAVE my account number! (Nor would I give it to such a shifty company!) Ilo just outright lied to the BBB. I told the BBB and they are waiting for ilo to respond. If you'd like to file a complaint, the BBB is at http://www.oakland.bbb.org .
