Hi all,
Just curious but I'm having LOADS of problems with Princo DVD-R disks and wondered if anyone else has been experiencing the same? What type of DVD-R disks do you use and are they branded/unbranded? Does anyone have any comment to make about the best/worst disks they've come across? It might up the rest of us when we see a bargain on EBAY!
cheers,
Pat

I am *trying* to use Hi Quality brand, as well as Pioneer brand, without much luck (though I doubt my problems have anything to due with the disks).

It seems that quite a lot of people have problems burning DVDs - whether it's the disks or not I'm not sure. I'm able to burn to DVD-RW but not DVD-R!! I'm using the same software as other people have reported using but still a mess.

you may want to look into upgrading your DVD-R's firmware.

As far as I know the Pioneer A03 is at 1.55 and on their site it says it's the latest one but I'm at brink of suicide!!!
Do you guys save the files as an image then onto DVDr or just straight to DVDr? I'm using TMPGenc to encode some stuff from mini-dv then using Spruce Up to author but when I get to the burning stage it comes up with a Comms Error with the A03. Before anyone says "is the A03 working" it writes data to DVDRW and reads okay - it also writes mpg files to CDR for VCD & SVCD so any ideas where I might be going wrong?

People who stock princo in their shop told me they are a waste of time.
Try infiniti, they work on my pioneer at 1x, a bit touch and go at 2x.

Right,
firstly TDK seem to be exelent dvd-r and seem
to be on a par with pioneer dvd-r for reliability.
Now for people with pioneer AO3 DVD writers.
The following methods are 100% working , both
for ripping dvd ...to putting mpegs/avi into dvd compliance.
mpeg or avi converting to dvd compliance
using tmpgenc 2.5
1 use camels mpegjoin to have one length movie
2 open tmpgenc ,and...
3 choose dvd pal or ntsc (whatever suits)
4 now click next open mpeg or avi one length
movie (if you need to join avi use neo-divx
avijoiner.
5 now click next ..then click on the clip checkbox
now use the up or down arrows to get rid of black top and bottom letterbox effect(if this is your preference other wise leave it.
6 if you dont want to change any other settings
just click next.
7 save your new movie (where ever)
8 clck next to start converting into dvd
............................
1 Now when done use ULEAD dvd factory
2 choose dvd
3 click next
4 open dvd converted movie
5 click next..
6 now add a menu or sound for your menu
7 click next ..next and select write to dvd
8 it will now start making vob for your movie
and setting it all correctly for dvd-r or rw
Now your movie is done and will play in all
good dvd players.
............................
Now ripping a dvd original to hdd , using
smart ripper 2.41 , and prassi primo 2.0 749
and again is mainly for pioneer AO3 DVD writer
and as long as the movie is small enough to
fit on 4.7gb or as is more realistic 4.3gb DVDR
1 use smart ripper 2.41 to rip all the vobs
chapters ifo bups ect to hdd
2 make sure you click on files , and tick all
the checkboxes not just the movie (all of them)
3 now click on settings..and select key search
every vob... demacrovision...region patch
4 make sure in settings vob access is auto
5 now when done ..make a folder exactly named
Video_ts
6 Now drag all the files made by smartripper
into this folder.
.........................
Now this is where prassi primo dvd comes in
use version 2.0 749
PUT DVD-R OR RW INTO DRIVE
1 open prassi
2 from wizard screen select DATA DVD
3 now select the Video_ts folder
4 MAKE SURE you select the folder not individual files
5 now click burn...and your done.
.......................
NOTE pioneer DVD writer , should be on seperate
IDE channel to HDD that has the Video_ts folder
The above
has been tested on most dvd stand alone players and is successful when using DVD-R
But certain players will have problems with
DVD-RW.
.......................
And finaly if you follow the above ..and dont
skip any details your pioneer A03 writer
will become an important tool , and produce
successful results
.......................
All other WRITERS may use different methods
and AUTHORING programs ,and will also work for
them... but the above is a fail safe mainly for
pioneer.
P.S anyone requiring prassi primo, smartripper,
ulead dvd factory ect.
go to www.neo-modus.com
and install the direct connect program...
do a search , all the above programs will be there ok
regards

my DVR-103 (OEM DVR-A03) is at firmware 1.68. I wonder if there is any difference in the rev levels of the OEM drives...

Thanks Codex, you're a star!! So much info and clearly done. Hopefully by using your instructions and changing to another DVDR (like infiniti) then I'll be up and running.
As for the firware 1.68 where do I get it if all the above still leaves me in limbo? Does anyone know what the difference between 1.55 and 1.68 OEM would likely to be? IS it the OEM version has been modified by the PC manufacturer and not by Pioneer?

Hi Codex,
Thanks for the info, much appreciated. I'll be searching out some TDK DVDRs now and put it all to the test.....nothing's ever easy when it comes to PCs!

Hi again,
Arghhhh! Still no luck!!! I'm getting a communications error with the Pioneer. I even tried Nero with the Video_TS folder and it goes through everything until "Communications error" then it says it can not "Could not perform start of Disc At Once".
I've installed a new WinAspi file as suggested by someone else but still no luck.
I'm sure it's something simple but even the 'help' file suggests checking the SCSI settings - it's an IDE drive! Is there some BIOS setting you have to check?
Hope someone out there can help????

Don't think this is of much help, but when I had both Nero and PrimoDVD installed on my machine, the burn cycle would crap-out at random points, almost always. I did a fresh build of Win2K with PrimoDVD and no Nero. The same machine is now running like a champion.

Hi,
Not that I'm in a rush to do 'another' rebuild but it might be all that's left to try.
Thanks for the tip,

Hi Guys,
Next episode in burning DVDs! I've now installed Ulead DVD Factory - not the best app I know but funny thing is it burned to DVD-RW and a DVD-R (Unbranded) without any problem. I then tried Spruce UP to do exactly the same mpg files and it threw an error up that basically it can't do it!! Any ideas why Spruce doesn't work while Ulead does? Mystery to me??? Would it matter THAT much that the Pioneer is set up on Secondary IDE as Slave (I also have a Yamaha CDRW as Master on the same IDE)? I haven't tried them swopped over but would it help? It doesn't seem to make sense......
Hope someone out there can throw some light on this puzzle!
Cheers,
Pat

I use Apple Media - best there is - have tried all my DVD-R movies on around 20-25 standalone players - even my old X-wave LB-900 (supposedly hates DVD-R's) loves Apple discs - always burn at 1X for best results on any media though.
Listen up - I have something to say.
It's better to burn out than to fade away!

I use Universal... Princo sucks... bought 99 of them and like 40 of them worked(like shit)... I think www.buy-dvd-r.com is the only one selling Universal DVD-R in US.... I also copy PS2 games with these... works great for me...

That's not Universal media, I bought from them before, they are US made DVD-R. I have to say US made media are not that good... you don't see pioneer, mitsue setting up factory in US, labor just too expensive... to lower the price they just throw in cheap dye to make those media

Hey Scott....hope I don't add to your problems. I also have a Pioneer 103. I use IFOedit to create an image then I use CD Record Now Max to record from image. Works well and rebuilds all files. This I have read is the upgrade from Primo DVD.

Scott,
I'll second the motion indicated by Cleanboy.
I also use IFOedit & Stomp's RecordNow Max.
AND, I have the Pioneer as the second drive to my HP burner. I haven't had any problems and the software is a snap to use.
