CORRUPT MP3 RINGTONES ANSWER:

Problem #1: bitrate should not be more than 64kbps, and do not use VBR (variable bit rate encoding).

Problem #2: Do not copy directly to the audio directory. Instead, use the "transfer" button on the menu bar once you select your mp3. This will make it work.

MPT Works!!!!!

I'm an imigrant from the PS2 forums, but I'm also a motorola v220 owner, and I have been running in to many of the problems listed in this forum.

Finally after literally hours and hours of installing/uninstalling/downloading/updating my mobile phone tools works with all the features (calendar, media browser, phone book etc).

So here's how it worked for me, hopefully it'll get some other users on track with their phones. BTW I'm running Windows XP SP2.

First I downloaded the following files from assorted websites (I suggest http://www.filemirrors.com/ for finding files on the net, or searching the forums can give you speedy results, usually works well for me) anyway...

The P2K drivers my file is called
P2K.zip

Mobile Phone Tools 1 my file is called
Motorola_MobilePhoneTools_1.23c_EN.zip

Motorola Phone Tools 2 my file is called
mobilePhoneTools_2.21b_US.exe

Now, if you are like me you have probably installed and uninstalled your phone and the MPT's many times, and windows will not notice your phone as new hardware when you connect it to the usb cable. For now keep your phone disconnected!

What I did was go into the device manager and locate the motorola usb modem which most likely will still be installed (if it isn't installed then windows should recognize it and ask you about drivers which is covered in the next step).

Select update driver and tell it to search where you have unpacked the p2k driver. It will say something about the software not being digitally signed but continue anyway.

Now go to your unpacked MPT1 and install it normally using the setup.exe.

Start up phone tools, and it should ask you how you will connect your phone, select usb cable, and then connect the phone. You should see a little clock. Keep clicking next, and after doing some tests, it will say that it couldn't recognize your phone. Select any phone from the list it gives you, I picked the T720 (I think) and finish the setup.

When MPT starts up it won't connect and you won't be any further and you'll probably hate me, but hold on...

Disconnect your phone again.

Now run the setup for MPT2, it will do it's updating and all that good stuff, nothing required from you.

Connect your phone and run MPT, you'll notice that the phone that comes up is still the T720 (or whatever phone you picked early), fear not. Disconnect your phone, select menu->setup->new phone, then select usb cable and then reconnect your phone. If all goes well you'll see the spinning clock again, and your v220 will appear on your monitor. Then if you are like me say a prayer and start using MPT in all it's fully functional glory.

Hope this helps somebody, I know I've been helped on many occasions.

**Edit** I just installed MPT 3 and everything is fine for me, just follow the setup.exe for it.

Thanks! Your instructions worked perfectly. I could never get the phone image to change either. Transfer of MP3's works great and now I can use them as ringtones. I was using PK2 to transfer but they wouldn't appear in my ringtone list.

Beast, I think I love you! ;)

Having spent a fair while trying to make sense of verious threads, sites, etc. - not to mention wading through a multitude of headache-inducing posts in this thread you've come up with a simple yet comprehensive guide. Cheers!

I'm in the process of downloading the necessary files now. (Of course, if it all goes wrong I take it all back! ;) )

Cheers mate.

I'm not sure why you hate the v220, but any standard digital camera usb connector should work, it has a regular usb at one end and a small piece that fits in the side of the v220 at the other. Once you have one of those try what I did a few posts up.

Late555

I hope it works out the same for you as it did for me, just post again if not and I'll try and help you out.

Hi, i read and copied your thread, i thought it sounded so easy. I downloaded p2k.zip, mpt_1.23c_en.zip, mpt_2.21b_us.exe. When i go to open the 1.23 it tells me it`s corrupt and i can`t unzip it. I`m not sure about unzipping, i just right clicked and tried open with unzip. any suggestions? thanx in advance!!

you probably just need to download it again. I get corrupt ZIP files occasionally and just redownloading it usually fixes it.

Here I am again. I get these 2 errors at 2 different places:
1)This device has a problem, but Windows cannot determine what the problem is.

2)Error during detection. Click on Retry for another try or on "next" to choose your device from a list.

This sounds important. Does anyone know what my problem might be?

Greetings all. I see alot of people have been helped so I'm hoping I can be one of them. I have read most of this forum and I have a problem connecting my v220 to my computer. Well more like the software. I can get demos of cheap programs that don't really allow me to do anyhting but change stuff in my adress book etc. but it does work. When I try to use the phone tools it asks me which method I'd be connecting to. I put USB and it searchs. It woulkd continue that way if I lft it be. But I unpluged and pluged back in my phone while it was searching. It appeared to find it and went on to the program. But still nothing. It never really connected. So can anyone help me on this. I download the p2k driver and have version 3.11h of moto phone tools. Also running win xp sp1. TY for any help you cna give.

Yeah I had a problem like that too - I downloaded some version of mobile phone tools. I dunno which, it was from a link posted by someone here. At first it worked fine.

But now everytime I hook my phone up to my comp, it can't find the modem. It fails to initialize.

I dunno man this really burns my balls. I'll take any kinda software that will allow me to transfer my pics. that's all I want. Can anyone help me out?
