if it was me and I could buy one it would depend if price was the same I would get the ipod unless I saw reputable reviews saying the m3 was better. I think ipod's the gold standard

from the little bit of comparison material presented, i'd go with the iPod...the LCD is attached and there's no cable to be severed :)

I was gonna create a forum asking people which mp3 player(s) they own or plan to get. I plan to get two different mp3 players. One will be tiny with say 1 GB storage and suitable for jogging, running, working out in the gym etc. I am looking at the iPod shuffle as its cheap, plays roughly 240 songs and I don't care whether it has a screen or not as I wont need to look a the screen when i'm exercising. I can load a playlist through iTunes which isnt a hassle at all and can change the songs when ever I feel like. And the other will have a large capacity (60GB+) which will be used on long journeys, aeroplanes and for my car when I get one. This will be ideal as I can transfer my whole cd collection (roughly 140 CD's) and choose what ever album I want. I am looking at the iPod photo or might just wait to see what comes out in the future as there is bound to be competition from Sony and Creative.

what is the point of having a radio on an mp3 player. it kinda takes away the idea of listening to your own music. most of the songs i listen to are bound to be censored due to swearing anyway. but say if you want to listen to a live broadcast of a sports game its quite handy if your not near a tv but then you might as well wait for higlights to be shown. i would go for the iPod as it seems more convenient.

its not only music on the radio tho, i mean thers comedy, news and radio shows which u cud record directly into mp3, plus the ipod battery will crash after 18 months n the ipod doesnt have voice recording either plus the iaudio is CHEAPER n supports also wma which will save alot of time converting ur wma files to mp3 and transfer of files to the iaudio is just drag n drop , whilst with the ipod u have to use itunes which lets face it is pretty crap!

a normal radio will have more choice on what stations to listen to.

is this supposed to be a bad thing. because i have to replace my cellphone battery at least every 12 months so I dont see this as a bad point.

i dont care about voice recording. seems like a useless gimmick.

i avoid WMA at all costs and stick to mp3.

there are other software apart from iTunes to sync the iPod e.g. real player and windows media player.

it seems people are always doubting apple. at the moment there the leader in mp3 players.

it may be for sum bt for others like myself its a crucial feature! i agree that apples ipod is the standard setter, but theres no doubt that the iaudio m3 wins as far as value for money is concerned! therfore am more likely to pick it over the ipod which seems to me to be more of a fashion statement

anyhow, opinions from other members wud be appreciated aswell

Could somebody explain the "Direct encoding" to me? Does this mean you can go directly from CD to mp3 player? Is that worth having? Also, the "Management Software Requirement", wouldn't it be better to not need it? It seems to me that these would be important qualities.

@ digidave

the need not to have managemeent software as with the iaudio m3 is great as far as im concerned

basically u just drag n drop, the iaudio acts like a "virtual drive", so u can organise ur tunes like u organise ur every day files on the computer

The main advantages of direct encoding are:

1) You can record/encode from a CD player as opposed to on a PC. Why would you want to? Well, some CDs incorporate copy protection which prevents you from ripping them on a PC
2) You can recored directly from a cassette player or record player

I have a Creative Nomad 2LX 20gb model and I love it. Forget the radio aspect ... and forget overpriced ipods. You can mod, trick out and do so much to Nomad Jukeboxes. Me myself am gonna stick a 60gb laptop hd into it and have even more songs. Consider Creative - had mine used for 2 years and never had any trouble. Awesome unit.

Big Will - 39001 PS2 (NTSC), HD Advance 2.0, Seagate Barracuda 300GB and v.2 Xbox 360 ... sweet, baby!
