Update...

It does work Pete :-) I did it with all the menus and everything worked as it should.. I am making a guide for it right now.. Of course I need a name for it something with Sadsac's name in it... Got any ideas?

Sadsac's Guide for 1:1 copy with functional menus?? Maybe I don't know trying to make it smaller ... :-)

Instead of functional menu just put "with Menus."

Did you ever find out what you did wrong the first time that gave you the backup without menus ?

I tried to duplicate your mistake but the menus always worked when using SS's directions -

However you went wrong - a note should be made so others don't make the same mistake :)

I,ve had a look at the splitting guide, that's a lot of work. How is this superior to ripping with Decrypter and then splitting to two disks, both with menu preserved, using DVDFab? I use the DVDFab method routinely, and it's a lot less hassle.

its funny in a way reading all these things about DVD Shrink etc ,dont get me wrong they are excellent progams including clone if you have the time and patience ,but after having been there done that with just about all of them out there ,there is really only one choice x copy express ,dvd idle pro ,or dvd 43 running ,liteon burner ,and decent discs ,tdk is good 1x8sthe best reproduction ive seen ever and not too expensive ,30 mins rip 16 mins burn ,hard to beat i think ,and no coasters .

because it's all being done with just freeware....
for some that just may be worth it. It's all the challenge of a new method for some....

Ahh!, I see, mind you, the 0.17.0 version of DVDFab is free and it will split full content over two disks, but not with a menu on the second disk.

Considering the hassle and room for mistakes involved in the freeware guide, I think I would still spring for the full version of DVDFab for routine use, just to keep things simple. Of course, there are those who like things to be complicated.......

Who ever said it was superior????? It is free and thats what most people like. Have you even tried it?? I don't think you have or you would have noticed it really isn't that hard at all. In fact it isn't much more to do than using DVD Fab. The only hassle here is your closed mind, and your quick willingness to bash something before even trying it.

The only room for mistakes is human error. As far as your ending comment about those who like thing complicate, well if you find that process complicate then I just have to laugh at you! Some people actually like to learn new things, and see exactly what is going on with there files (not just hit a button and never know what is going on) I'm sorry if any of this offends or upsets you, but it really chaps my arse when another member (sadsac) takes the time to show everyone a different way to do something and it is free, and then you get a couple of close minded idiots who just want to bad mouth everything. Sadsac should be congradulated for his efforts. Do you just come into the forum to find faults with everything..? I know you are going to say it just your opinion, but your opion is flawed IMO

Quote:

Another idiotic statement.. There is only one choice and then you list three?? Another close minded person!! Arrrggg two in one thread!! The only statement there that is true is "decent discs". How can anyone that has ever used other software say that Xcopy is the way to go is way beyond me? Have you ever tried DVDCopy3, CloneDVD, or DVDtoONE all produce better quality backup's than Xcopy! and are easier to use, have support, and updates something Xcopy has been lacking for a long time now. So there really is more than one choice it's just your choice to stick with the one way you like which is totally fine, but there are more than one choice.

I fully understand that you are both just voicing your opinions, but so am I :-)

Whoa! Play nice, I was just trying to understand the motivation for this method when a fairly long established route already exists.

The freeware aspect was pointed out, and I responded that for routine use I personally prefer the (admittedly), point and press method of DVDFab. My comment about people prefering the difficult route sometimes was tongue in cheek, as anyone who is a regular contributor to this forum will be no stranger to interesting "complications".

As for being closed minded, I have successfully tried a very similar procedure to the one suggested using DVDRemaker, and although I found it an interesting exercise, I still prefer the speed and simplicity of DVDFab for routine use.

I'm sorry if my personal preference for simplicity in this case offends some, but that's all it is, personal preference.

I think this thread should be 'a sticky:'

Because while being an excellent example, of how; like-minded folk, don't/didn't find the same conclusion, from the same, freely given facts'.

PCs' are like people, (mixed up perfection) a product of, yesterday well lost, and forgotten, dreams, and/obscured programs.

I ain't goin no deeper.

As I mentioned earlier, the free version of DVDFab (0.17.0) does not give you menus on the second disk. It gets round this neatly by packing all of the extras on disk one so that the menu on that disk works properly, then it fills the remainder of disk one with the beginning of the movie, the second disk just autostarts into the second part of the movie.

BUT there are some rare DVDs where the extras occupy as much, or more, space as the movie, DVDFab will fail with these disks. For this situation, a method such as Sadsac's is the only way to go if you wish to avoid compression. Incidently, if you use DVDRemake (a commercial product)for this purpose, you can not only select the VOBs or cells to blank for each disk, you can directly edit all of the menus right down to individual buttons. So you can disable buttons that do not have content on the split disk.

Oh, I forgot to mention another situation where splitters like DVDFab have trouble, that is episode disks.

For a typical four episode DVD I generally blank the last two episodes' content and remove their audio with DVDRemake, then I edit the menus to deactivate all buttons that link to the blanked titles. Foreign audio tracks and the chapter menus for the blanked titles can also be removed if desired.

Then I repeat the process to blank the first two episodes to create a disk for the last two episodes.

So I end up with two disks, each with two uncompressed episodes, and each with fully working original menus that will only reference the material that exists on each disk.

The above can also be accomplished using Nero Recode and the freeware version of the program Menuedit.

Higgsbun, where did you get a freeware version of MenuEdit, as far as I know this proggy has registration cost of 17.00?

Sorry Higgsbun, just answered my own question you are right MenuEdit is free, only need registration key for advance features.

Yes, the free version of Menuedit is limited in that it does not give you a full graphics display of the menus. What you get for each menu is a blank screen with the buttons shown only as outlines, but their sizes and positions are correct, so it is usually easy to guess which menu you are looking at.

Registration unlocks the full menu view.

Wow. A few days away from the site and I come back to a battle of wits on my thread. Cool. Glad to see I'm stirring the poopoo.

In my defense of this technique, I'll just say ONE thing:
By doing it this way, you CAN learn a lot about DVD file structure and encoding. (As bbmayo stated). For those who only need to split a movie a few times for REALLY long movies, why fork over the money for another program. I rarely even do this. I just happened to run across someone asking how to do this and the idea popped into my head. For those who ABSOLUTELY REQUIRE no compression for whatever reason, maybe you SHOULD opt to buy another proggy that makes it simpler. For me, I'm perfectly satisfied (at least for the moment) with DVD Shrink compressing to 60% or better. I personally don't notice that much difference in picture quality on my 13 inch black and white TV set. LOL. Just kidding. It's actually a 9 inch color TV. For those who are borrowing from friends, the library, renting from Netflix, Hollywood Video, Blockbuster, and Movie Gallery, maybe you should think of BUYING A FEW ORIGINALS along with your proggy to BACK THEM UP. You know who you are. No joke intended here. And lastly, this technique really requires minimal time if you know what you're doing. VOB blanker runs really fast. And DVD Shrink runs really fast when you're not compressing video.

I know. I actually said "I'll say just ONE thing." I was cuttin' on the guy who said:
Quote:
there is really only one choice x copy express ,dvd idle pro ,or dvd 43 running ,liteon burner ,and decent discs ,tdk is good 1x8sthe best reproduction ive seen ever and not too expensive ,30 mins rip 16 mins burn ,hard to beat i think ,and no coasters .
To you: That's one too many good choices, dude! And I really don't think you'll find anyone who'll agree that the TDK 1x8 media is the best. I actually like it, but acknowledge that it's far from the best. Now, run along to another forum and leave us to our LONG, ARDUOUS labor, pulling our hair out over this new, EXTREMELY COMPLICATED, state of the are, ground breaking, TIME CONSUMING, waste of time, 2 fast 2 furious non-burning, non-common sense having, worst thing I've ever seen posted at Afterdawn, method.(whew)

What a waste of time, me posting this long thread update. Can't buy back that time either.

And as for superiority: I don't remember ever saying this. ZippyD said it best when he said,
Quote:
because it's all being done with just freeware....
.

And that's the bottom line, cause SADSAC said so. Whooooooooo. Git' er' done! Necks, unite!!!
