Hi squizzle,
Wow I've never had any problems like that. Go to cd freaks and see if someone there can enlighten you. They really know their $hit about liteys in the lite-on forum. http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44 Let me know what you find out.
Akazecks,
Another thing you can try is resetting your eeprom. Make sure you save the current values someplace you can find it. When I first started useing verbatum dlp dvd+r's my burns with my litey sucked and my set top wouldn't even recognize them. After resetting the eeprom, I'm getting the best burns on these same verbatums of any other media I've ever used. Follow the same link provided above for squizzle. Let us know how it goes.

Hey squizzle,
Something I just thought of, You downloaded omnipatcher when you crossflashed your drive didn't you. There should be a box you can check in it next to booktype dvd+r/rw media dvd-rom. That way its automatically assigned to your f/w flash. I used omnipatcher with my litey 451S@851S and it worked like a charm.

OK, I downloaded a patched 811s firmware (HSOR - latest) and ran it through omnipatcher and told it to auto-booktype. Hopefully that works. I tried using Decrypter's booktype setting to booktype a +RW to ROM, but apparantly that didn't work. Hopefully this works out.

hello,
i have also fallen victim to bad media. my problem is as stated in the subject of this thread. only the backups that i wish to make new backups of are not old, they're fairly new, just unreliable media (ritek DL). i have since switched to better media (fuji, verbatim), but i would really like to make some backups of some of the riteks i made.
does anyone know if there is software out there that will allow you to backup these sorts of discs. that is, it seems to me that since the disc will play in a dvd player consistently, that maybe there is software that will make the dvd-rom on my computron less "finicky". you know, make the dvd-rom able to cope with more errors.
i appreciate any advice that you guys could offer!
thanks

have you tried DVD Decrypter? That's the best ripper out there IMO.

squizzle, thank you for your suggestion.
i tried DVD Decrypter, and that doesn't work either. here is the error, if you care to see.
i thought that i once heard of some software that works with your dvd-rom to improve it's performance. and i was hoping that maybe someone knew of software that might help increase the dvd-rom's tolerance for errors... more like a (stand-alone) dvd player. i don't know, maybe it doesn't exist except for in my imagination. but i appreciate any advice that you have to offer.
thanks

pack header errors are no big deal, but that unreadable sector could be a problem. What version of Decrypter are you using? Newest is 3.5.4. If that's what you're using and XMen 2 is really the movie you're trying to rip, you probably have a bad disc. Either dirty, scratched or just defective.

i'm not sure what version of decrypter that i have. i can check when i get home. the disc in question is not scratched or damaged in any way, and it has probably only been played twice. the problem is that it is a copy of the original, and it is bad media (ritek dual layer). i don't use them anymore, but i have a substantial chunk of my collection on them already.
i don't have the originals anymore, so i was hoping to find a way to rip them, so that i may back them up on better media (verbatim, fuji, etc.). i've certainly learned my lesson, but i really hope that i can eventually find a way to save the data on those sub-standard ritek discs.
thanks again

I just ran into a problem similar to that yesterday. I found that if you rip using your burner, it does a better job. If you're using a reader, maybe you'll have better luck using the writer to rip the disc. Poor quality media will give you problems when trying to rip again.

Yeah... It also depends on the burner. Some burners just work better than others.

You do realize that there IS some loss or corruption of data that occurs by copying, right? No burned dvd is truly an exact copy. And, depending on the data size, compression, and media, 2-3 iterations of copying can begin to produce artificats in the data, i.e. skips, graphical blobs, or non-functioning data.
its always best to make backups of originals.

If one were to believe that then, if you were to copy a copy and do so through 6 or 10 or 20 generations it would then be unreadable.
Not so. You will lose some when you take your original and render it to fit on a DVD-5 and then, if you were to use decent media, the rest of your copies would indeed be the same. Any additional loss would result from pple using crap media, i.e. Memorex and the like OR some may be lost when some S/A decides that burning at 16X is fine. Using common sense will result in copies being just that - copies.
We're not talking Videotape here OR are we ?

i just want to say: thank you to everyone for the useful feedback and conversation. i did eventually figure out that my burner (which is a much slower reader than my rom) will read and re-rip the copies that i burned onto the ritek DL discs, as squizzle suggests.
but in the end, the story is always the same: don't use crappy media if you want to have reliable copies... i always have to learn my lesson the hard way.
anyway, thanks

You have no idea how great that sounds ~
We talk and talk about media to Newbies about the importance of media and they call us every name in the book because they are as certain that, as God made little green apples, all DVD media are the finest available and that it HAS TO BE something else that causes their problems.
I wish I could bottle your insight and pass it on to them :D)
Burn on my friend, burn on . . . .

If they are indeed Ritek Ridata, then they will have the logo/brand stamped on the disc. I never buy any non-logo media. Sure they can counterfeit the logo, but it's not worth it for them to go through the trouble. Yes, you really only have the internal manuf ID code to check for genuine media, but even these can be counterfeited. So your best best is to run PI/PO tests on the media. If you have PIF errors over 100, you can bet they aren't Taiyo Yudens, Verbatims, or even Ridata. Also, make sure you have the lastest firmware because alot of problems with genuine Riteks last year were a result of old burner firmware.

NOTE: Many of the +R RiData are not "Branded" SO by all means, run them through Nero's tool and DVDInfoPro OR DVD Identifier.
Another excellent reason to purchase online. They have fine policies on returns OR swaps if you suspect any counterfeit puppies mixed in with the litter.
Cheers,
Pete
A final thought ~
We were told last year that '05 would see a big change in the way media were sold and advertised. We were told that tighter controls would lead to less confusion and better quality in both CD and DVD's across the board, worldwide. Of course it was the "politicians" who told us that, responding to complaints from the public. It seems they were doing a lot more to us with their hand in our pockets than relieving us of any extra money they found there. I for one do have to admit, it did feel pretty good while they were doing "it".
Maybe one day, in hopefully the not too distant future, they'll be able to do that politician "Hand? thing they ?do? so well in our front pocket BUT without them promising us anything. A silent "hand-job" if you will. It will still feel good and we wouldn't have to worry about being let down later on from something they SAID. :D)
(another ScubaPete musing)
Cheers,
