Hey, i have an even more strange problem...
Testing port 53000 ... Unable to test (invalid port given, or test service failed)
WTF is this??????
I have been using Azureus for quite some time, figured out how to forward ports, and then see this on my screen and am baffled.
If anyone can help, much appreciation would be given.

I'm not sure why, but I get that message when a torrent is actively downloading. When I pause the downloads and then run the port test, it works fine. (I get green lights though, so I guess all is working).
My question.. when I log onto my router, I have the option to enter QoS (Quality of Service? I think i read somewhere). Don't know what this is, but will configuring it make torrents faster?

Yea I am having this same problem, and none of this has helped. I changed my port to 53095 and opened it up in my firewall, and now it seems worse. My faces are always red. I get messages like " UPnP: Mapping 'Incoming Peer Data Port (TCP/53095)' failed", and " UPnP: Mapping 'UDP tracker client port (UDP/53095' failed." But when i go to the NAT/Firewall test and test it it says ok. What the hell do i do?? I'm in college so i'm using their networking.

O.K I hate to add confusing wood to an already rather large fire so here goes:
My Config:
Zonealarm v5.5.062
Azureus v2.3.0.4
OS Xp Pro(with the that damn crappy firewall turned OFF)
Open up ZA, click on Firewall(at the left). Where it says "Internet Zone Security" I have it set to High, below and to the right it says "Custom" - click on that.
A window will pop up with 2 tabs - internet zone/trusted zone - click on internet zone and browse down the "high security settings" until you see "allow incoming udp/allow outgoing udp". Now i'm not sure if Azureus/Bittorrent requires both, but just input 6881-6889 for both.
Then go to program control, select azureus, then click on options(btm right) and check "allow open process", then click "expert rules"/ "add" and give it some name. then click on "modify" in the protocols window, click "add protocol"/"add protocol". At the top where it says "protocol" select TCP&UDP, give it some description the click O.K till your out.
I also did the above for Java, simply because Azureus uses it. This should get you up n running by simply opening those programs wide up, so you can experiment with turning off incoming/outgoing tcp/udp and program specific ports to see what you don't need to leave open. The nice thing about Zonealarm of course, is program authentication and access - so you won't have to worry about anyone else accessing your computer through those open ports, because only those specific programs will be able to.

Okay, I have a NAT problem and I think I may have screwed up my Azureus since it won't seed anymore. I've tried setting up a static IP address, but my ISP told me that their DNS server changes every two weeks- there was no point in telling me. Also, since I can't seed, I also can't download anything either... Can anybody help?
Oh, and a warning that says "please open port 6885 UDP" comes up a lot. Can anybody tell me how to open that?

Sorry, but I need help with same issue, only I don't know how to find my router or if I have one. I will give this info for hopefull help. I have windows xp sp2, sbc yahoo dsl, I don't use xp's firewall, I have norton and have told it to allow azureux(permit all), I have speedstream 5100 modem, I keep trying to swithc ports but nat error all the time, have read a bunch of crap I don't understand, and believe me, I'm trying to learn, otherwise I'd done give up long ago. I can download somethings, fastest was like 30kbps, I tweaked the deal from Azureus frequent questions as far as "settings for good downloads" etc. I only have yellow smiley and many seeds for torrents I downloaded still yellow, can someone please help me configure the ports correctly, I'm truly a noob as many say, but I need help.

6881-6889 are blocked or choked by many ISP's as they are know torrent ports. Use a different range of ports.
<EDIT>
They are also increasingly blocked by torrent trackers. Pick a range of maybe 5 ports in a range somewhere above 15000 (you have over 65000)

I changed my port range to be 49300 to 51000 and found that my download speeds dropped significantly. I have since put my settings back to the default and speeds have increased. I guess my isp is not blocking them. I think also it is important to change the settings as per my last post as that will improve the rate in which data flows according to your connection speed. It is important to note that the upload speed of you connection is what determines everything in terms of settings. Also if your D/L speed drops when you get to 80% or so it is probably caused by the amount of seeders you have online. Peers will supply you with where they are up to on the download but you need plenty of seeders online to get the complete download. HOPE THIS HELPS

Quote: I changed my port range to be 49300 to 51000 and found that my download speeds dropped significantly.
Did you also change your firewall and portforwarding to reflect the changes? - if so did you leave 6881-6889 forwarded also?
Quote: It is important to note that the upload speed of you connection is what determines everything in terms of settings.
not true, this is determined by many factors.
* Number of seeders.
* Availability and speed of seeders.
* Your upload speed is only detrimental to your download speed if you are choking your connection i.e. if 25k is available and you have set the client to use 25k, you have not left any room for communication overheads and other outbound requests (tracker updates etc.)
Quote: Also if your D/L speed drops when you get to 80% or so it is probably caused by the amount of seeders you have online. Peers will supply you with where they are up to on the download
It's not really a question of where they are up to. 'pieces' are downloaded at random. For example if there are 10 pieces, they dont nescessarily come to you in order 1,2,3,4....etc they will come as initiated by the remote seeder, or requested by your local client.
If your interested in how torrents work, there is alot of information on the following site:

Mmmmm yeah ok. I have been lessoned there but you wont give me the ports you use, interesting. Real help would be better than a lecture on how torrents work. PORTS GIVE ME THE PORTS!!!!
and yes i know about the firewall and how you have to change that as well...sort of goes without saying that one. I also waited the 30 mins between port changes. I have noticed that people don't ever offer the exact ports to use.....why? I am not an ISP spy.

darthme - People probably don't post because maybe they don't want too many people using their ports? Who knows? I'm just guessing, so don't lash at me if I'm wrong. I belive someone earlier stated that 6881-6889 are ports that are commonly known, thus anyone using them would probably get slower downloads. I'm getting faster d/ls than I was before and green, ever since I changed all the port numbers to 5-digits. Use any between 42000 - 65000. Something like that. I'm using 4915# Just replace the # with any number. Yea okay hope that helps. Make sure you change all your port information to that. I have NAT testing OK now.

People dont want others using the same ports because the more random we keep it the less likely our ISP's are to spot it and choke them.
darthme - The PM system is for questions unrelated to the thread - If you have a question related to the current thread, it is beneficial to all reading it if you ask it here. The attitude in your last PM was unnescessary and unwelcome. Further PM's of this sort will be forwarded to site moderators.
With regard to your question there is no list of ports you should use, only a list of ports you shouldnt
The blocked ports list include, but is not neccessarily limited to, the following:
Direct Connect
411 - 413
Kazaa
1214
eDonkey
4662
Gnutella
6346 - 6347
BitTorrent
6881 - 6889
