The thing is I've got several discs burnt with back up info on crappy media that now I'm afraid to use because of making them unusable when trying to read them!

the only thing that I suggest to you is to use the crappy media for kids just like JaguarG-d said! go out and buy better media for things you want to have for 30-100 yrs...... that's how long a DVD should last according to the experts, if it's kept in a secure place!
