Am I wrong here? I mean a regular BenQ is only about 50-60 bucks. And a pretty high quality box is 20-30 dollars. Do you think this number's wrong or what?

That number is accurate, but the BenQ can't go in just any old box... I think there's just one or two chipsets (Prolific 3507 and I can't remember the other one) that it plays nice with...

BTW, just ordered an LG GSA-4167B and an external case ($80 total, including shipping) to accompany my Pioneer DVR-109 and LiteOn SOHW-1693S which are both externals as well...

Oh, sorry. Good to know. But are these boxes anymore expensive than a regular box would be?

That box in the picture is an ME 350U (I'm pretty sure), and it has (of course) the Prolific chipset. It can be found at NewEgg.com, Supergooddeal.com and a few other sites for around 30 - 35 bucks... Other boxes with a Prolific chipset are in that same price range. They get more expensive when you combine USB and Firewire. The hard part is finding a site that consistently lists the type of chipset in the specs...

A good place to start is here:

I really like my Plextor 716-A...

Burned fine with everything I put in it except Princo (Yukky quality) & Ritek which only burned well at 4x. The other brands I put in it burned fine at full rated speed of the discs. Of course I'm stuck on 8x TY -R's right now & am very happy with them.

I'm also in the market for a new burner but I'm wondering....does anyone know if there are any true quality differences between the BenQ DQ60 and the 1620? I've seen recommendations for the 1640 but can't seem to find that one very easily. I've also heard some people are waiting for the 1650 to be released in the US. I was hoping to replace my old LiteOn ASAP, and am leaning towards the DQ60...anyone know of a reason why I shouldn't? :) Thanks!

Trust me, one version up isn't going to matter. I suppose you could wait for the 1650, I don't know when it's going to come out cause I don't follow BenQ news.

A good place for drives is Newegg.com

My BenQ1640 with TY + or - media and burn speeds at 8x have nearly all 100 scores when testing under Nero?s CD-DVD Speed Disc Quality tab. For $40 delivered I am very happy with the BenQ1640, (with bitsetting,) and by the time it goes ka-put, Blue-Ray and the like will be out. Let's face it, we burn to copy originals on DVD5 and strive to achieve the best quality possible. So whether it's Sony, Plextor, BenQ, Lite-On, etc., if the burns are flawless, then why care.

@IHoe,

I can see why Bitsetting can help, but I still think it is more important to buy good media (and a quality burner) than to bitset any DVD+R. Also, I agree about the Riteks not being the best, but at 4 cents a DVD, I could not pass up the deal. Also, I only use those for unimportant backups (crappy movies & Data).

@aabbccdd,

I didn't think about Paypal, but I still get my discs cheaper than 35 cents each. I get a 100 pack for $25 out the door or if I want a 50 pack it is $15 (same price for RWs but those are Ricoh). On-line, it would be .35 per disc plus some shipping, probably $6.00 or something, so I would have to buy a lot of discs to make up for the shipping. I've still got about 75-80 TYs left so I will be fine for about 2 months. Also, I may decide to go Dual Layer, especially now that I found out exactly what a Superbit DVD is.

I finally broke down and tried some verbatum DL dvd+r's and booktyped them to dvd-rom. I was attempting a little project. I wanted to put my set of law and order (3 flipper discs each consisting of dvd9's on each side) onto 3 DL discs. I combined the flippers with dvdremake and removed the adverts and warning screens. All the menu's are fully functional. The folders were 14.4 gb which I compressed down to 7.85 gb with dvd-rb/cce making an iso and I then burned with imgburn with my benq DW1620 pro at 4x. Playback is flawless and the video quality is good and much better than I expected and thats on my 52" hdtv. I know this might be a little off subject but I was so impressed that I had to tell somebody. Bottom line is you can't go wrong with a benq dvdrw drive.

aabbccdd,

Hey moneybags, can I get a loan? :) Most of us can't afford 1 plextor 716A let alone 2. They should perform well for you. I can't say 1 bad thing about my benq.

PS: that is one fine looking babe in your sig.

@Mort81 and aabbccdd

I just now ordered the new BenQ DQ60 which is the new version of the DW1640. Can't wait to get it. Gonna master it to my LG and use the LG as the ripper and Benq as the burner. Sound right?

@rick5446

I just ordered this drive from shop4tech. I have ordered from them before and had great results.

Cheers.

Should work 9mmruger1. If you set the jumper on the benq to master just make sure you set the jumper to slave on the LG if they are bothe on the same IDE channel and cable. If you haven't already I would recommend replacing the IDE ribon cable with a round ATA/IDE 133 cable. You can get them here http://www.coolerguys.com/idecables.html dirt cheap.

Thanks Mort81, I'll do that.

I am really looking forward to getting it so that I can do some scans of my burns. My lg is not supported by DVDinfopro so no go on the scans.

I guess I've been fortunate then, like I said I haven't had any problems as of yet....I use 1 click dvd copy to compress and burn, I also use either DVD43 or DVD Fab Decrypter to break the encryption...
