Glad it all worked out for you, now you have a true Lite-on drive. I also own a 1633 which has always worked out well for me. Lite-ons may be a little noisier than other drives but they are real workhorses. Happy burning to you :)

Yeah that drive should identify as a litey SOHW-1633S now. If you want to go a step further you can upgrade it to a SOHW-1653S which I found to be even better.

The 1635S will give me 12X when recording DVD-R (I noticed that the reason why Nero limited the burning speed to 8X for my Verbatim 16X is because the firmware limits the recording speed to 8X).
I'm a bit worried to install the 1635S FW though: that FW supports 4X for DL while my drive is supposed to go only up to 2.4X.
Now, mecanically, there's probably no difference, AND I don't burn DL (at least I haven't yet).
I tried burning at 8X and at 6X with this new firmware. 8X worked and gave me no errors but my DVD player shows ... some "complains"
I'm checking the 6X now and ... so far so good.
Could be because I have it connected through an USB 2.0 port. USB 2.0 does not guarantee speed so that could be a reason (altough, the drive should automatically protect from buffer-underrun).

You got a couple numbers turned around. I didn't say 1635S, I said 1653S. My drive is actually a 1633S crossflashed with 1653S firmware. I'm not sure which firmware you would need from the codeguys page since my drive has multi-colored led and memorex drives have a blue led don't they? If it works with 1633 f/w I would probably leave it alone.

You're welcome. Glad I could be of help. Only reason I mentioned that about the 1635 is because lite-on makes a model by that designation too but you can't flash a 1633 to a 1635 only to a 1653. I think the only difference is what you pointed out about the ability to burn DL media at 4x and some other f/w improvements. Good luck.
Something else to mention is that your memorex/litey is capable of booktyping dvd+r media to dvd-rom making your burned discs the most compatable with set top dvd players. You can use the lite-on booktype utility. Here is a link to it. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441 There is also a link to a usage guide on that page. This can only be done with dvd+r media not dvd-r so when you use up all your dvd-r media you can try some dvd+r media and booktype them to dvd-rom if you like. I only use +r media and always booktype them to dvd-rom.

I was just wondering, is there a difference in x4, x8, and x16 DVD's?
(video quality wise)

The bitsetting tool sounds interesting: I did buy DVD+R a while ago (also Verbatim) but never managed to burn anything my DVD palyer would digest.
The palyer esplicitely supports DVD-R but there's no mention of DVD+R, Anyway, I'll keep that in mind for the future.
Another great tip. Thanks.
