Hey, it's me again.

I had troubles with Memorex media (and found out in this forum why ...) so I've been using different ones: Sony and Verbatim.
On the Sony's, I got one bad disk out of 150 (the drive would just refuse to write it), but now I got the Verbatim and ... can't write them.
I have the latest Nero and the latest firmware. Nero shows 4X as the max writing speed which is wrong: should be 16X, so it seems that the drive does not recognize the disks ...

Here's Nero's log.

Just wondering if the Sony disc have been working for you and you get 1 bad burn out if 100 why you would want to change media? If you find media that works well stick with it.

Good question.
I bought the Sony when they were on special for ~$15 each 50-pack. I thought it was a steal.
Now they're back to ~$40 per 50-pack.
I used Verbatim CDs and I've always heard good things about them. So when I found the DVD-R at ~$15 per 50-pack, I thought I'd go for them.
Also, the Sony were 8X certified. The Verbatim are 16X certified. Since I have a 16X burner, I thought I might take advantage of that.

I had tested the simulated speed with nero (since the burner is on USB 2.0 port) and turned out 19.2X (or something like that) so I thought I was ready to cut down my burning time by half ...

(Sorry for the edits. I should have spell-checked first)

You need to close down some of your running programs, you do not have a whole lot of memory left to use.

I think you are correct in your assumption about the drive just not recognizing these new Verbs. Although your fw is up to date, it does not mean that at the time of this release it included support for 16x Verbatims.

I notice th ememory issue: these pre-installed IBM laptops come with so much bundled crap ...
Any idea on what to do to make the drive recognize the disks?

Have you tried burning the disks using another app, to make sure it is not just a Nero issue. Otherwise if you cannot get them to work then stick with what does, and wait til your mfr udates your fw again.

What programs do you have, you can try burning DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn, but to do that you need to create and iso file because these two programs only will burn iso files.

Nero is the only burning software I have installed.
I'd rather try a software that can burn VOBs, unless you think that using DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn may give a higher chance to use those disks.
(that is because I'd have to convert the VOBs to .iso).
What about Roxio? I also found a "Burn4free" in the software section.

FYI: I also contacted Memorex's customer service. What the hell, I paid for the drive and Verbatim is a well-known vendor. I can't be the only one trying to use Verbatim on a Memorex burner. Will keep you posted if I get anything good from them.

The problem with Roxio is that it does not always play well with Nero, the two programs have had conflicts over the years. Do not know about burn4free, however you also can try a free trial of CopyToDVD from VSO this program is much like Nero.

Got a call from Memorex: these disks are ... too new so I either get a new burner or I have to change them.
This sounds like a ... scam though: am I supposed to go around and look only for "old" media so that my 1 year-old DVD burner can actually work?
I can understand that if I have an 8X burner and I buy a 16X media, the software needs to be able to understand that it can go only as fast as 8X, but with a 16X burner and a 16X media, even if the media is newer, shouldn't be possible, at least, to burn at 8X?

I'll try tonight the other softwares that arniebear suggested but at this point I have little confidence.

I too doubt if you will get them to work, the fw by the mfr needs updating and it sounds like Memorex is not putting the support out there for the drive. Keep burning with the 8x media, you won't find much 4x out there anymore. Next time you think about a drive try looking into a NEC, BenQ or Lite-on they are a little better in support of their drives and are all reasonably priced. Good luck :)

Arniebear,

I tried other tools but as expected they did not work.
So I have 100 perfectly useless 16X Verbatim disks.
Man I'm p****d!

Thanks for your help.

Sorry you got stuck with the disks, I guess all you can hope for is Memorex gets out some more support for your drive and you can then use them again. Good luck.

One thing you can do (at your own risk), your drive is an oem lite-on SOHW-1633S and you can flash your drive with lite-on firmware. Look here for more info. http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?s=912dc3fb3f925cc38aece...

Good idea, on that crossflashing. Even though it is a risk it might just work. Did not know the drive was a Litey.

I have one question: I downloaded the software to flash LiteOn devices (Ltnfw) and I backed up the firmware in my burner, now where do I get the new firmware?

I looked at this page:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1934
but the latest firmware, BSOY, is dated Sept. 2004.

Can you let me know where to get the .bin file to flash my drive?

Thanks again ...

Arniebear,

that file is an executable. If I run it, it says it can't find a lite-on drive, and instead it found a Memorex.
I think I need a .bin file so I can use it with Ltnfw. Don't I?

I never have actually crossflashed a memorex/oem lite-on drive with lite-on f/w but you will probably need the f/w from this site. http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html You might also be required to use omnipatcher. I would recommend starting a thread on the cd freaks forum to see if anybody there has done this and can assist you. I have only crossflashed lite-on drives to newer improved vs. I think the f/w and if needed omnipatcher are .rar format and you will need WinRAR or similiar to decompress the files.

I think I managed to fix it.
I did something slightly different than what Mort81 suggested: I downloaded BS0K.bin (notice: 0K, not 0Y).
I flashed the drive so that it was then identified as a LiteOn drive.
Then I used th elatest BS0Y.exe from LiteOn website.
The Verbatim seem to be recognized now, however, Nero shows 8X as max recording speed.
I just burned a disk, to try and worked out fine (the drive seemed a bit more noisy when writing the lead-in: I hope nothing serious. Maybe it was just my impression).

Burnprocess and data verification completed: 0 errors.
This is great. You guys made my day.
I can't believe that OEMs stop supporting products like this!
It's clear that my drive is perfectly capable to handle these media.
It seems to me that Memorex is counting on people to buy the new DVD burner to replace the old one.

Things were different ... a while ago.
I remember my glorious 2X CD burner (boy, must have been over 10 years ago). Never had to update anything and I certainly used media faster than 2X.

I guess this, like the RPC is one of the new ways that wendors try to force people into upgrading ... way more than necessary.
