hi

umm so you all look good and ready to go, but yes 16 mins to burn at 16x isnt good

this is the drive doesnt like the disc much:

i wonder what time span you would get burning at 8x instead of 16x ???

have you ever tried a diferent brand DVDR? i would try some decent media just incase now your system is/looks good to go, it may be the discs letting you down?

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Are you running QSuite? I just read on CDFreaks that the MCC-004 coded discs have caused problems with Solid Burn turned on. Try turning it off (if your running it) and see if there is a difference.

Let us know.

hi, i'm only up to speed in RAID with Solaris systems, not PC's so don't know if DMA definitely has to be ON for the RAID devices (i think it does plus even if DMA is off for a given drive, say a cd drive that isn't being used at the time of the burn, DMA is dragged down to the same level of the lowest common denominator; but without googling i don't know for definite if these RAID devices need DMA to be ON).
checking..

here's the regedit way of bullying DMA into being ON....
Quote:
Re-enable DMA using the Registry Editor

My thanks go to my fellow MVP Alexander Grigoriev who taught me this method.

Run REGEDIT. Go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances. You have to go through these subkeys and check the DriverDesc value until you find the proper IDE channel.

Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.

Open Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, congratulations, you've made it (at least until the next time Windows disables DMA).
but still googling to see if DMA needs to be ON for the Promise RAID controller....

edit- here's the snippet from the BCHC firmware that shows MCC004 is supported in the firmware -
Quote:
MCC 004-000 16x,12x,8x,4x
- just don't know (yet) why the Nero logs show MCC004 to be unsupported....

Hi

First of all I did what creaky stated with the registry, but I don't notice a change.

Secondly I'm using this drive: DiskPeripheral : WDC WD2500JB-00GVA0 atapi Port 0 ID 1 DMA: On to burn from.

I turned off WOPC as well, and got this:

It's like this thing is hard coded to not exceed 4x...

@Dolphin

I'll try turning solidburn off and wopc off to burn

@Rotary

I'll recieve a shipment of DVD-R TYG02's next wednesday, but as of now all I have is MCC-004, RICOHJPN R02, and a couple RITEK R03's. Next Wednesday if I can't get this thing to burn TYG02's @ 8x, I'm think I'll flash it's original firmware(BCFC) and send it back to newegg for replacement.

RITEK R03 @ 8x

These two scans illustrate what I was trying to say in my first post. The drive starts out good, but then I can hear it "die" and when it starts up again it stays at 4x.

@Draugr: You got a bad install of that ASPI. All 4 should read 4.71.2.

I don't remember exactly how to correct it. You need to use the Adaptec killdump.bat utility, reboot and try again, I think.

Hi Grandpa,

How's this look?

Going to try a burn now.

EDIT: Same problem.. Any idea why it dies? It will climb to 8x and just stop, and after 2-3 seconds the drive starts spinning again and continues at 4x. I'll try the same burn on my NEC and see if this problem is with the BENQ or my computer.

EDIT2: WTF... My NEC does that reset crap multiple times throughout the burn. The way it "climbs" to 8x is quite weird as well..

Hi! (I realize that I am probably getting annoying by now, I'm sorry really!)

Do you guys think that maybe my Power Supply is going bad?

Here's the story. I shutdown my computer and when I turned it on I got a black screen with red writing stating that my Radeon 9800 Pro's power cable wasn't plugged in. This puzzled me because I didn't even mess with it, so I look and its firmly plugged in. I restart and get the same error. I unplug it and plug it back in and the error goes away, but my BenQ has no power. So, I turn the computer off unplug both of their power cables, wait five minutes, and plug them back in. Now both of them seem to be working alright, but do you think this may be the source of all my woes? That my 480W PSU can't support the power to burn at anything higher than 4x? If anyone can confirm this possiblility, I'll pick me up a new PSU tomorrow.

hi

yes this whole saga is very odd and to be honest its looking like its something else rather than the normal problems we all see on here with burning issues, may be a new psu will sort it? not sure really but from what you say something is wrong there!

oh and dont worry on posting alot here i for one down mind in the slightest as we are all trying to help you sort things, all this can be very annoying we all been there chap. and dare say will be in the future too.

i have a 650watt psu but i have ran the same amount of drives on a 500watt all ok (i chucked the 400watt cheaper out my new pc) and the 500 / 650 psu's were top range enermax with good power rails for all like ram/cpu/g-card etc, i am running 10 drives right now.

oh and one more thing i only installed aspi layer as you did first off i didnt make mine go to same version for all 4 files, done the same for years... no problems here.

i burn with a pioneer + liteon

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Like Rotary said, your not getting annoying at all. We all are trying to figure out your problem and learning at the same time.

Are the BenQ and the Radeon on the same power line?

Your PSU should be enough wattage to run your system without problems. Before you got the BenQ, what writer were you using?

I know it's a hassle but you could take your PSU in and have it checked out. Should only take a few minutes for them to test. Or, if you don't mind the time waiting for a shipment, you can get a PSU tester here for $8.50.

Good to hear I'm not annoying :)

@Rotary

Yeah, very odd. I wish I had the normal problems. :(

Well, my power supply is a Powerlab 480W, so I don't think it's all that great. What I plan on doing is using two power supplies because it's obvious this one still works. I'll have one dedicated to my NEC, BENQ, and possible my 250GB IDE Hard Drive(which I burn from). I just think my current one has too much to handle as this computer is hardly ever turned off, and is never idle(Torrents, USENET, etc).

Just to clarify on my BENQ and NEC a bit: When I burn greater than 4x they are both quite loud(you can hear them spinning), but in the case of my BENQ when it stops("dies") for a couple seconds and resumes at 4x it is very quiet like it doesn't need as much power. I can't help but think maybe qsuite or something realizes that it can't get enough power so it keeps it at 4x for the rest of the burn. If I run a simulation on a disc it rises to 16x perfectly and smoothly, but when you actually burn something it starts good, but loses power/stops for some reason. In the case of my NEC, I can't really say. It dies/stops multiple times during a burn, but eventually it will jump to a higher speed, die/stop a couple more times, then jump to the desired speed, and die/stop until finish. What I'm trying to say I guess, is that I believe they die because they can't get a sustained power supply, and that my BENQ is a bit "smarter" as it doesn't keep trying once it loses power/stops like my NEC.

@Dolphin

My NEC and my BENQ are on their own power line. However, my Radeon and 250GB IDE HDD share a power line. EDIT: Oh wait, I forgot my SATA drive is on legacy power as well, so it's my radeon, 250GB HDD, and an 80GB SATA HDD that share a power line.

Before my BENQ, I was using a NEC ND-3520AW. It's currently a slave to the BENQ.

To be honest Dolphin, I can be almost sure it isn't providing 480W. This thing is 2-3 years old of hard use(this computer is never turned off unless installing something or if it needs to be restarted.) I'm sure this thing is not the "youth" he once was, so to speak. It's just easier(and faster I might add) to buy a new and better PSU, and use a little wire and some molex pins to turn him into a standalone power unit as I am most certain that he can handle two DVD-RW drives at the least.

Another possiblity is to buy a 5.25" External Enclosure and see if my BENQ works good on my laptop, but USB 2.0 might cause even more issues.

a USB2.0 enclosure is a great idea, i use two, one for my trusty ripper drive, a combo dvd-rom/cd-writer, the other for whichever new burner i ever buy, so at the moment it houses one of my Benq DW1650's :)

!!!!!!!!! I can't even put my happiness into words!!! I feel like I won the lottery!!!

I bought an Antec 500W SmartPower 2.0 and didn't even bother with that cheap POS PSU I used to have. I was going to use them both, but this PSU is light years ahead of my old one. And quite frankly I don't even need the other one. I'll save it for something else.

At first, I was disappointed that my burns were jumping around, but I realized WOPC was on, and turned it off. Tried to burn again and!!!:

Aside from a stray CPU spike, PERFECT!!! I need to try to use MCC-004 before I can truly rejoice, but I'm so damn happy!!! Woot! Well, I'm going to try MCC-004 now.

Hi Dolphin! I'm so excited! I didn't have luck with Verbatim but I found something I had completely overlooked for weeks.. I kept wondering why it would stop at 4x, then I realized under disc info, 4x is the only write strategy my drive has... look at this:

You see? It only has 1 write strategy and that is for 4x... WTF? So, it wasn't my fault! LOL! But, seriously, anyone know why it only has that single strategy? Fakes?

Should make a new thread? Thanks to you guys I fixed the problem I was having with my drives dying and such, so this thread is complete. I really appreciate all your help and I...I LOVE YOU GUYS, in a brotherly sense of course! :)

Edit: Wow this truly is weird. It only has 4x for my NEC as well???

I hate to slander people, but I think newegg sold me some fakes... Anyone heard of this happening before? Or is it something I'm doing wrong?

Do you have DVDInfo? Can you check the discs with that and see if you get the same results?

I ran across this:

http://home.arcor.de/ala42/MCSE_Mirror/

I wouldn't try it with one under warrenty.

I just checked one of my TY discs and write strategy isn't even listed. That's why I suggested DVDInfo.

Hi,
Draugr, the thing is in terms of write strategies most modern drives support 4. What you've got with the BenQ is a drive that reports only the strats it supports. With the Nec it tells you how many strats are available in theory with the disc(6) & how many are actually available via that drive(4).

@zebadee

You are correct if your refering to the Write Speed. What we've been noticing is the Write Strategies in the Extended Information section.
