Lol. Chrono Trigger was good dude. It's all gonna be okay lol. And besides, at this point FF7 is pretty close to being old school - but since it's so much better than FF3 it hasn't got to that stage yet lol. I think I'll call it a timeless classic :)

In my opinion, i think its a waste of money. Never actually played it, but a few "mates" told me it was a waste of $40. Maybe at $10-15 its worth a play, and at worst, u will have a really nice Coaster if u dont like it;)

We finally agree on something!!!! Nice;) Mario RPG was a great game, actually was playing it the other day, good times. I also agree that FF7 was the best of all time(along with ff3), and im sure Vagrant Story is great in its own rights, just never dug that game. I need to be sucked in in the 1st 15 minutes, or its on to the next.
How do u feel about Kingdom Hearts and its sequal, do they rank up there with ff7 and Vagrant Story to u??

Ok gear up for a long reply...hehehe
While this thread says the Best RPG Ever, I could never boil down to just choosing one. Why you ask? Quite simple my fellow RPG freaks. Its because no RPG has quite ever been 100% perfect. Whilst most of you will probably now be thinking, oh here goes another fool with this crap, well read more to understand what I mean. Many games can be considered the best for the aspects that they include, and to the people that they appeal to. However, combining all the best aspects of all the RPG's that exist, would no doubt make an RPG that would be unbeatable, and lovable by all.
For example.
My most favourite RPG series is the Breath of Fire series, but only Breath of Fire 1 through to 4. Capcom seriously screwed it up with Breath of Fire 5. Now take this series for example. You play through each game from 1 to 4. The storyline continues from each game, and things that characters from the previous game said would happen, does happen in the next. For example. In Breath of Fire 3, at the end, you have to choose to either kill the Goddess Myria or let her live and seclude yourself in her land for the rest of your life. The area of the world where she dwells in has been covered by the desert sand. She tells the characters that she is the only thing protecting the entire world from completely being covered by the desert and if they killed her, the world would perish. Its then when Momo tells her that people could make machines to stop the sand, but Myria butts in saying that how could she guarantee people would not use those machines upon themselves? Well in Breath of Fire 4, the world is covered by desert sand, and momo suddenly appears and says something like, she could remember working in her lab (from breath of fire 3) and there was an explosion and she suddenly woke up here.
Now whilst the aspect of the game in Breath of Fire 3 is to kill the goddess to defeat the game of coarse, you're actually damned if you do, and damned if you don't. You see, you need to kill her to beat the game, but if you kill her, the world gets covered by sand and people build machines to kill each other.
That storyline continuation alone is a great aspect to have in an RPG series. Take also the fishing in Breath of Fire 3 and 4, and the Hunting in BoF 4. (BoF - Breath of Fire) Those implementations can be added into an RPG game too. You also had to help faeries rebuild their world in this fantasy realm, by setting them to clear land, hunt, build etc etc. Helping new cities become established is another great concept for RPG games.
Now lets move on to Atelia Iris: Eternal Mana by Koei. Atelia Iris is another great RPG which combines RPG and Alchemy. (In a spectacular and unexpected, but excellent way) Combine the way of alchemy from this RPG and the way you get your spell points from destroying surrounding objects, and you have another interesting aspect into RPG, as well as your Alchemy fiends that help you craft alchemy type items.
Now lets move on to Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy has many great things you could add to an RPG. The Jobs from FF4 or FF6 I always forget which one, the Materia from FF7, the GF's from all games, the Triple Triad Game (FF8 version cause FF9 version blew chunks), the draw system and many more things could add so much more into a singular RPG game.
Vagrant Story's weapon creation system is another that could be taken as that allowed you to make your own weapons and some that were not even pre-made to be made into the game. You could virtually make nearly anything and it was an enjoyable aspect to play with.
Wild Arms series had some great things too. The ability to make arms and the ability to progress through the game through various different characters and seeing their storylines progress made that game fun to play regardless of the fact that the graphics were not the best, its storyline exceeded expectations. And the transportation system in that game was awesome.
Things like having skills to allow you to do things like, farming, harvesting, mining, fishing, hunting, woodcutting etc etc, then using the items in more advanced skills like cooking, apothecary, brewing, weapon making, etc etc is another aspect been done in Fairyland Online MMO which is a great concept, not to mention having a pet that helps you in battle.
Puzzle Pirates bring a new concept of allowing you to sail the seas and go to war with other pirate ships, also viewing the different islands, trying to take them over, and having your own house which you can style. Another great aspect for RPGs.
These are but a few games that I mentioned here with quite simplistic things that make them all unique. Take these aspect from all these games, and the best aspects from other RPG games I haven't mentioned like Kingdom Hearts and others. And make one series using these aspects, and wholla folks, you have the most complete RPG game ever made.
This is why there is no "Best Ever" RPG game. Because all these aspects from each of these games make each of those games the "Best Ever" for some people. Now if you want to speak Generally, well go ahead, but general speaking is not always right especially when sometimes games that totally blow get chosen, just because a handful of people liked it for no apparent reason. The fact of the matter is, these companies need to make a complete RPG game to further endorse their future sales. Unfortunately for us I don't ever see that happening. So it all boils down to what each person likes and as long as we keep standing by the RPG Games, we will get more coming towards us. Hopefully one day the best aspects of all games can be placed into one.
Honor the brave who fought,
Honor the dead who fell,
Honor the world they saved.

ummm...I never said i dont like it because of its name. Where did u get that from? I never said thing close to that.
@yanden, ty for contributing ur thoughts to this thread, I really agree with you in a lot of aspects. Ur idea that their isnt any 1 greatest game is right on the point, and I too loves the Breath of Fire series. BoF actually challenged u, I died soooo many times in part 2, and i really enjoyed the fact the level of difficulty increased as moved further into the game. As far as part 5, that can go into the new "greatest coaster" thread we are about to create LOL. Final Fantasy always throws something new at u, whether it be espers, job systems or materia. FF also has the most well thought out story lines to ever grace a video games, that is why i feel the FF series is the greatest series of games avaiable. I am truely looking forward to 12, 13, as well as Dirge of Cerebus;)

Awesome post Yanden. Mudearies I'm starting to agree with you on some things lol! Vagrant story rocked, and FFVII is my pick (and SvtStang among others knows ;) ).
@ Yanden - I agree with you that there is potential for there to be an unbelievably epic perfect RPG that blends all the best elements from all the great games out there - but the question is what is the best RPG not what could be. So if you had to pick, what would you choose dude? Come on just do it lol!

Hahahaha. Nice - you'll never get those 30 hours back mate I hope you enjoyed them lol. Is Dragon Quarter really considered that bad? I haven't played that much but the battle system was alright. If they took the timer out would you feel different? I went and bought that having the older ones in mind and expected it to be a classic style RPG... how wrong i was then!

I though Dragon Quarter blew, not sure if the timer would make me feel any different. It wouldnt be as bad if it didnt have the BoF title on it, but its kinda like Chocobos Adventure, alright for a few ppl, but doesnt capture the meaning the franchise setout b4 it.

They're al getting suspended and I'm beginning to feel pity lol. And I added Ren and Stimpy in there - thought I'd be pushing it with the mods if I left the extra line of text in. Come another situation and I'll add another clever little phrase in lol.
