The question is simple, what do u feel is the best role playing game ever to grace a console?

I feel that Final Fantasy 3 is the best rpg ever, it opened doors for game such as Fianl Fantasy 7, and introduce people to a genre of games that was once characterized to be only for "geeks" or "nerds"

what do u think revolutionized the genre or added to a type of game that at one point was a minority in the gaming industry?

Final Fantasy VII period. It was the first RPG to weave awesome graphics (at the time), a great engrossing plot, characters that had pasts to be discovered (Vincent, Cloud, Sephiroth Zack etc etc), and it was the first game to truly weave emotion into an RPG (Aeris' Death). It built on everything done in Final Fantasy's past (including 3/VI), and made it better. Sure you can say number 3/VI set it up, but FFVII sure as hell knocked em down. I mean if it wasn't for Black Sabbath there'd be no Metallica - and if there was no FF3/VI there'd probably be no VII - but VII does things so much better than 3/VI (as does Metallica over Sabbath.)

Besides, it was the first of Squares games to use FMV, which brought the games world and characters to life, AND the sountrack is still stuck in my head for god sake. Besides the awesome battles and story, the unique characters and the style in which it was all done, theres was over 100 hours gameplay, endless treasures to find and enemies to defeat (how awesome were those Weapons??). Chuck Sephiroth in the mix and you have the best RPG ever - and a yard stick for all RPG's to follow, even to this day! It's an RPG so memorable that it feature it's characters in a myriad of other forms (be it games like Ergheiz and KH, or films like Advent Children)because fans can't get enough, and it sure as hell is the RPG that caught most gamers attention, and get them hooked on the genre like Kate Moss on crack. The only other RPG that comes close to FFVII is FFVI or Chrono Trigger. Either way Squaresoft/Square Enix are the kings. Here's to number 12 then! :D

Ummm, saw Shadow Hearts Covenant for $50 and it was used. Might get it when I have some more cash. As for Wild Arms 3, it's still sitting on Ebay, but I figure i might as well focus my energies on Star Ocean and some more Vagrant Story and save my cash. Other wise I'll never finish Star Ocean and forget what the hell is going on lol. And I've been getting Megadrive games - got TAZmania and Toe Jam and Earl (need the instruction manual cos its wierd!) and I just won Aladdin on EBay :D
I want to get the first Shadow Hearts before I get Covenant, because the story carries on doesn't it?

LOL, congrats on Aladdin, ur 10 right j/k:) That game was fun as hell. Sounds like it sucks livin in Aussie country, games cost a fortune!! Ya, Covenant starts off where the original ends (I think) BTW, Vagrant Story sucks, only Square game i never got into, didnt u have 2 upgrade each part of the dude's body (that's not normal)? Not into that kinda stuff unless the main character is a lady:) Genesis is great (Megadrive for those not it the know lol). Have u played Time Killers, kinda like Mortal Kombat but a bit more bloody. If u havent, check it out;)

Will have to! As for Vagrant Story, you don't have to upgrade body parts, rather you can focus your attacks on enemies body parts (as they can you), so if you attack the arm with which they are holding a weapon, when extended damage occurs, their attacks won't hit as often - likewise, focus on their legs and their movement will be hindered. Of course this can happen to your own charatcer so you have to be careful. I think it's one of the best RPG's Square ever put out (good storyline too :P),and I'm glad I bought a copy on Ebay ;) As for the Aussie games cost, just remember it's all to do with economics and currency conversion, strength of the dollar etc. SO although we pay more for things, we get paid more to compensate for the rising cost of goods (known over here as 'enterprise bargaining') - you wouldn't be able to squeeze that out of a 10 year old would you? lol :D

damn, i wish i paid more attention in econ LOL!! Minimum wage in CA is currently 7 bucks, and as far as expenses go, $7 doesnt get u very far, especially if ur a gamer;)(what is 7 bucks worth over there?) Thx for clearing up how Vagrant Story works, played it years ago, and just remember u upgrade legs, arms, etc... and never really got into it. Maybe i should check it out, with my expanded intellect LMFAO!!! How long is Vagrant Story, does it have any replay value??? Only asking cause all of the other squaresoft games ive played (every FF game) were worth playing through at least 2 times, and i really like games that arnt shallow.

Ah, I am soooooo glad you asked! Vagrant Story has a New Game+ mode, where you begin the game with your character that you finished the las t game with. I've seen screenshots where people are playing with 1000HP - you start with 250HP and it's hard to gain it! You also have new areas unlocked that you couldn't access on the map first time round! Replay value is great then! Our Minimum wage is about $6, but thats for young kids who just start work at the legal age of 14 years and 9 months. I'm getting paid $17.30 at the bottle shop I'm working at, and thats the minimum wage for our industry, since everyone is eligible at 18, and it is considered a higher risk job (Our legal drinkin and driving ages are both 18). I picked up Vagrant Story on Ebay for 11 bucks including postage by the way, so if you can manage that it's worth it even you end up not liking it. And games stores like Game Traders will pay you decent cash for a game of such rarity if you don't enjoy it...

Sorry, Timmy thats all i read, i have selective reading LOL j/k! Only because I trust ur opinion, im gonna pck up a copy of Vagrant Story tomorow at, u guessed it GameStop LOL! Australia isnt much different than than the U.S. (at least CA, except u make $17.30 an hour!!!) Really apprectiate ur opinion, ur the 1 person I know knows(good graamer, huh) what they r talking about. Did u like the original Wild Arms and its sequal on the ps1?? Also, did u ever play Suikoden or its sequal? They were both A+ games. I thought they were must haves, would like to know ur thoughts!!

Haven't tried any Wild Arms or Suikoden - that's why I was thinking wbout getting WA3, and Suikoden is really hard to find unfortunately, though I have heard good things! I was too busy playing the likes of Dragoon and Legaia on PS1 so I couldn't fork out for those ones. Did you ever play Saga Frontier? Another good RPG style game by Square was Front Mission 3. It was like an RPG with Mechs and strategy - like FF tactics with big F**k off robots lol. Had a good story too!

Final Fantasy Tactics was excellent, spent at least 100 hours ont hat 1, u cant find a better strategy game than that. Front Mission was good fun also, but i havent played the sequal on ps2(is it worth the money?) The original Saga Frontier was also fun, but the ps2 sequal was a steamy pile of sh!t. U made me reminise bout Legend of Dragoon, even found 1 for $9 on Ebay!!!! Think im gonna get it, although there are great rpg's one ps2 that I have still yet 2 play..... If u can find the ps1 versions of suikoden and wil arms, I strongly urge u 2 get them, cause besides the FF series, they were my favorite rpg's on the ps1;)

I'll take your word for it SvtStang. The Front Mission i played - number 3 - was on PS1, not sure about the PS2 version. As for Saga Frontier, that PS2 game got some terrible reviews! If I can find it I still wanna try it though. I've seen Dragoon for that price, but it's Us (don't mind the price of $9) so i have to pay postage and knowing my luck it would never arrive lol! I saw a Buy it Now of Dragoon for about $130! I have a copy of it but I can't play it on my PS2 as it is a back-up! Suppose I could whip out the PS1 but I really like owning these games for some reason!

Trust me, the sequal of Saga Frontier isnt worth the money, save ur $130 for the PRICE TAG OF for Dragoon LOL!!! Thats rediculous, whoever was offering it that at that price is on crack. Ebay can be shady, I won a copy of Mortal Kombat 2 but never received it (cost $10, but thats not the point) U should really get a chip for ur ps2, cause the graphics are improved (for ps1 games) and u can buy NTSC titles at a cheaper price, screw the a@@ that offered Dragoon for $130(It's not FF 7 douche bag!!!!) LOL

lol Good Call. I'll think about a chip for NTSC, but I'm more concerned with saving for an Xbox 360 atm! Played one at a mates place and it's awesome :P

Oblivion what???? Are u talkin bout that new rpg for 360, cause that game sucks, just like all the others b4 it. No direction, no fun.....the list goes on and on. Nothing like being able to run around for 3 hours and accomplishing nothing. Ya, the graphic are beatiful, but that means nothing.

Trust me mate, FF7 is the heroin of RPGs - You'll be back mwahahaha! lol. Mudearies, I'd agree with you there - FF7 and Vagrant Story!!! Come on I have legions of followers haha! The New Game + mode makes Vagrant Story elite. I reckon I could play it through about 50 times and not get sick of it - or the awesome story for that matter. And Sidney has to be one of the best characters in an RPG :D . I think I've said enough about FFVII as I'm sure SvtStang will agree lol... By the way it's good to see some input from all the other dudes on the forum so thanks guys ;)
