you see a shiny little round smal thing inside your computer, on the big board.

that's the battery for the BIOS.

take taht out.

I didnt say you couldnt get usb 2 on 98,In most cases, if you upgrade your computer with an add-on card, it will come with a USB 2 installation CD that will work with Windows 98 and ME.
But I dont see this as your problem anyway, as usb 2 devises are backwards compatable with usb1, its more likely a driver issue,firstly get all driver updates from your auto updates and try this, also I really would put more ram in, too little ram can cause all sorts of problems.
Also check you have all usb devices enabled in your Bios.( usually hitting the del key a few times will get you in to the bios when you first switch your comp on.)
