If this post had been out about 2 months or so ago, my vote would have been for AnyDVD & CloneDVD. I did the trial version and loved them. I still love AnyDVD. I'm having some problems with Clone now though. I bought them both from Slysoft. Clone keeps saying that my media is bad. I'm using the same media that I used during the trial period and I've even went out and bought more. I've used Fuji, Memorex, Maxell and Sony. All keeps giving me the same error. I have a few movies that I need to back up and nothing is working. Any suggestions on what I need to do?

@Mort81,
I have yet to compress a movie below 80% (actually I have yet to compress an ARccOS corrupted movie). I rarely even go below 95% on non Sony movies. Based on the quality difference from 95% DVD Shrink and re-encoding the movie with Main Concept or TMPGEnc (I own those 2 encoders not CCE or anything else), it is not worth the encoding time. DVD Shrink takes 15 minutes tops for analysis + transcoding.
For an entire movie with 2 passes, it would take somewhere around 2 hours to re-encode and results are not guaranteed. I would then have to re-author the movie which means that I would have to create a subtitle file (or hope that the VobEdit .sup will work correctly).
And Riptit4me automatically launches DVD Shrink, does it not (remember, I never used the program though, so I assume)? Also it has to use PSLs and FixVTS which is more than AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 do. This means that there is less chance of errors after the rip/burn. AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 sometimes has bug fixes after a movie is released to correct problems. For people that backed up the movie before the problem was fixed, there could be playback issues.
In other words, I am saying that DVD Decrypter + PSL + FixVTS + the automatic cleaning in ripit4me will yeild better results on average than AnyDVD alone. However AnyDVD does not require any additional steps, so it is faster and easier.
Then DVD Shrink + Advanced Analysis is better than CloneDVD2, but much slower. Since ripit4me = DVDD + DVD Shrink + PSL Plugin + FixVTS it takes on the characteristics of all those programs. AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 will then be much faster, easier, but not always do as good of a job.

Quote: AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 sometimes has bug fixes after a movie is released to correct problems. For people that backed up the movie before the problem was fixed, there could be playback issues
this happens quite often, slysoft can't fix the problem movies until after there released and if you have already ripped/burned the movie to DVD you CAN NOT fix the problem. so if you get the new movies on tues. when there released your rolling the dice with the Sony movies that you will be able to back them up correctly/error free.

so this is very true !! i agree 100%
TLWilson3,try uninstalling and doing a clean reinstall of BOTH programs (CloneDVD 2 + AnyDVD) then make sure you firmware is up to date on your drives/burners also DON'T use memorex at all or fujifilm thats MIT .try to find the Sony and Maxell media thats MIJ theses will code out as Taiyo Yuden which is the best out there along with Verbatim. Verbatim is easier to find in the B&M stores then the MIJ Sony or Maxell so thats probably your best bet. i buy all my Taiyo Yuden online at supermediastore.com if you want to buy online

JaguarGod,
For what you are doing, your technique is just fine. It would never suite me however since I like to keep most of the extras on my backup and the folder is rarely under 6 gb usually closer to 7 gb and sometimes over. The compression level is rarely less than 30%. The reduction levels are usually more in the area of 55 to 60%. Shrink would never suffice but with rb/cce there is hardly any noticable video quality loss.
I wasn't badmouthing your methods, only that you stated you were getting the best video quality possible and even though dvd-rb/encoder takes more time it will always provide better video quality than a transcoder regardless of the amount of compression.

I am a newbie to all of this. I didn't start burning until I used the trial version of AnyDVD and CloneDVD. So I'm just trying to figure out what is what. How do I update my firmware? How do I do a clean uninstall? I emailed Slysoft about this and they told me that I needed to send them a screenshot of all of my programs and that one of my programs may be interfering. BUT...I have the same programs that I had when I used the trial version. I think it's the updated software that has a glitch or something. Maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, AnyDVD is working fine. I used DVDShrink to shrink it and now I need to figure out a way to burn it to a disc. I don't have Nero. Any suggestions? If anyone out there has ANY suggestion on what I need to use to get this movie off of my hard drive and onto a disc.

I 100% agree with Mort here. As I stated earlier, quality is #1 priority with me. A Transcoder like Shrink, Clone etc. just isn't going to cut it for me when it comes to any amount of compression. With DVD-RB, It is nearly impossible to tell a Backup from the Original. Time is not an issue with me. I set mine and go to bed.

TLWilson3,you can update your firmware here
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php
or use DVD decrpter to find out what firmware you have in DVD Decrypter click tools go to drives then go down to "Check For Firmware Updates" and it will take you to the right page,then you can update your drive there you can download DVD Decrypter here also you can burn with DVD Decrypter after you transcode with Nero, theres guides here too
http://bbmayo.home.comcast.net/
doing a clean reinstall means uninstall the program run an registry cleaner line CCleaner do a disc cleanup and defrag your system reboot then reinstall the program.
also list all your burning software programs so we can make sure you don't have some conflicting.
also DON'T post your email addy ,its against the rules and not to safe you might get spammed. shoot me back with any questions

Thanks. I removed my email address. I checked for firmware updates and it says that there were no updates. I have NEC DVD+RW ND-6100A. I haven't yet tried to uninstall and then use a registry cleaner. I'm about to try that now. The programs that I have are...AnyDVD, CloneDVD2, DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink. As far as I know, I have all of the latest versions of each. I had the same programs when I used the trial version of Clone. The only difference is that AnyDVD and CloneDVD have newer version...which I have.

good none of thoses will conflit so do the a clean reinstall and see what happens. remember to burn no faster than 8x with good media ,its possibly that your NEC doesn't like some of the media your using like memorex,fujifilm etc.

I have the same burner and the same media that I used during the trial version period. I don't know what's going on. This is getting to be VERY frustrating. Will let you know what happens.

I have all programs as I am sure majority of members here do. I recommend the free ones such as ripit4me, fixvts, and dvdshrink (all used together of course). I have found that using AnyDVD leaves some copies choppy, and/or pixelated. The free programs seem to do much more in the decrypting stage than those pay for programs although it may take a few extra steps, it is well worth it.

@Mort81,
I wrote my first post rather quickly, so I wanted to make sure that I explained why I use Shrink over an encoder. I totally understood why you stated what you did that is why I went slightly more in depth.
If I were to keep extras, I would encode over transcode, however, getting the highest quality to me means removing extras and making sure that as much as possible goes to the main movie. Actually, if there is any compression on the main movie, I cut out most of the ending credits (never watch those anyways) and remove those stupid logos at the beginning. Although the latter is more of me not wanting to wait 30 seconds before the movie actually begins.
One of the things I do not like about DVD is the over use of Extra Features. I would have preferred them on a separate disc and have a movie only on Disc 1. However, if this were the case, upgrading to next gen would not make as much sense because a High bitrate DVD (7500kbps+) is not a night and day difference between Blue Ray or HD DVD.

Its funny how you say that, I use the same media on both the pay programs and the free ones and I do not get choppy and pixelated results. Sony Accucore DVD-R.

I typicaly burn at 12x and have had great results, I have noticed that ripit4me allows my backups to play on my mothers dvd player, VS AnyDVD which does not allow it to play.

Yes I am running the latest version of AnyDVD. I have tried lower speeds, I always like to mess around with different aspects of all software I use. I just have better results with Ripit4Me, DvD Decryptor, and FixVTS. Don't get me wrong, I used to love AnyDVD but ever since I started using the "free stuff", I feel more comfortable.
Everyone has their preferences and it seems that everyone has different results with different computer rigs. It's just what I prefer that's all.
