Thanks for the trying to sort this out.

My question is the following. If you had a dual layer burner like my Plextor PX-716A and dual layer media like Verbatim what free program would you use to back-up the entire DVD.
I stand by my original post. Free Imgburn will build an ISO for you to burn(also with ImgBurn) on a DL disc without having to remove anything. A 1:1 exact copy. I use AnyDVD to remove encryptions. I have not used DVDFab(Free). I assume you can run it to rip it to the HDD. Open the file with ImgBurn(Free) and create the ISO and burn the ISO. It's simple. ImgBurn even chooses the optimal layer break.

Ok. But when I ripped the whole movie to the hard disk with DVDFab Decrypter it will ripped the movie to files and correct me if I'm wrong but you can not burn an image with files. Then are you telling me that I can use Imgburn to build an ISO image and then burn it with Imgburn. And that it will not be affected by Sony movies. And yes I will use DL media. Thank you.

yea open the file you ripped and build the ISO with ImgBurn and burn it too. Use DL media if greater than 4.7 GB and single media if less than.

Thanks a lot. But it seems to me that I can do the same thing using DVDFab Decryter to rip to the hard disk and use DVD Decryter to burn an ISO image. But the thing is that I did try this with Underworld Evolution and when I try the backup it was stuck in the menu. You could not access the movie even through the chapters. Am I missing something?

If you are so hardheaded that you want to do it your way, then by all means, do so. Everyone here has suggested basically the same thing to get it done. Why did you bother to ask for help? Good luck. I have wasted enough of my time. NOOBS!

DVDFab only rips in file mode, DVD Decrypter cannot burn files, only iso. You need an iso, so either build one with imgburn or rerip in iso mode. Underworld Evolution has some heavy protection on it, try running your file through VobBlanker and then build the image with ImgBurn if you are doing a Dual Layer, otherwise the protection will stop it at the menu. This is my advice you can either take or leave it.

Sorry if I sounded hardheaded to you but I'm a newbie. I'm trying to follow your advise. Also I'm trying to being very careful how I ask the questions. Not everybody is an expert in backing up DVD's. You need to be very patient with people because you are going to scare some. But thanks to LOCOENG for the guides. Thank you.

AnyDVD makes my pc jumpy and I get fantastic rip and burns with this freeware combination Dvd FAb Decrypter + DVD Shrink using no compression and removing all un wanted video and audio streams. I then back up and burn using img burn onto dvd 9 and play that on my upconvert toshiba dvd hd player to my 32 inch HDTV video is upconverted to 720p looking fabulous no pixelizations completely solid playback. I would also add I always rip several discs then defrag my hd reboot and burn

Great thread, and man do you guys know your stuff.

Just to clarify for an old school DVD Decrypter user who lost touch :) It sure was easy back then.

1. When talking about compression, like 80% compression and lower do you mean you are trying to sqeeze a DVD9 on a DVD5? OR are movie studios now compressing the video on retail DVDs and removing this compression makes for a better quality DVD?

2. Assuming the answer to one is you are refering to fitting a larger than 4.5gb movie onto DVD5 then is all the talk about which program(s) will give you the best quality from start to finish mute if you are not going to compress? i.e. you are going to rip and then burn to a DVD9 with nothing removed.

3. Will imgburn remove the new tougher protections?

I ran into a problem with the movie "The Wild", I used dvdfab decrypter and ripped to HD then burned the videoTS with Nero express. The movie would load but the menus did not work. This is what kicked off a 3 hour research session leading me here :)

In all cases I rip to HD the full DVD and then burn the full DVD with no compression, usally this means to DVD9. Is it pointless for me to learn many of these great new programs or should I stick with imgburn and learn a few new guides on how to use it?

Last question, I promise :) Is Plextor 716a the burner to get these days? I see a Plextor PX-716AL/SW on mwave.com for 160.00 bucks but found a few 716a on ebay for like 95.00. Not sure if these are the same drive or not.

This forum rocks btw. and Thanks for your infos,

Dennis

I have two Plex 716a's and am partial to them, great burns. The only difference in the 716a and the 716al in the specs that I am seeing is one is tray load and the other is slot load, otherwise everything is the same. Both have the 8meg buffer and the same read/write speeds. So it comes down to price difference and whether you want slot or tray, also whether you feel comfortable dealing with this on ebay. Choice is yours.

As for ImgBurn, it does not remove the protection on its own you need to rip with another ripper or run AnyDVD behind, which ImgBurn will give you a message about using AnyDVD with ImgBurn. You would be better trying out RipIt4Me which integrates with the old DVD Decrypter, then uses FixVTS to clean your file, does an excellent job, and then you can compress with Shrink/Recode and burn. DVD Shrink will give you good output for you compression to single layer DVD5 disk :)

thanks for the advice. For me I do not want to compress at all and do not mind spending the extra money on DVD9.

I gave ripit4me a try and found it super easy to use. So far it ripped the movie using DVD Decrypter, then ran fixVTS. Now it is loaded in DVD Shrink. Since I am not wanting to rip anything out or compress, then Should I just burn what I have with imgburn or will Nero express do the job?

Since you want no compression then go ahead and use ImgBurn, you don't need Shrink if you are not going to compress.

dlevens , the PX-716A isn't being made anymore. i had a couple of the slot drives PX-716AL and had problems with both of them. so if your going to buy new go with the PX-716SA sata drive as long as your PC supports sata.

and IMGBurn is a great tool for doing DL(it handles the layer break well) good advice from Pete. another option is to use CloneDVD 2 and AnyDVD theres a free 21 day trial of the program if you want to give it a shot

@aabbccdd

Glad to know about the problems with the slot drive, I have steered clear of them because I was not sure how they would be if you had a jam problem. With the tray I have always been able to get the disk out. I know Plex states they have the failsafe mechanism to retrieve the disk, I was still unsure. Plex is still offering this drive but at 179.00, which I feel is too high. Although I did pay 140.00 for mine new. You can still get the USB Plex 716a from Newegg, but the price is still 200.00, which is about what I paid from BestBuy, the drive is a honey though and I really love it.

Is there a good guide for imgburn that will take me from where I left off after using ripit4me and fixVTS. Right now I have a videoTS folder with 6gb of files. Do I just burn those with imgburn or make an iso first and then burn the iso?

sweet thanks. iso mds made. About to burn with imgburn now.

Just out of curiosity, why make an iso first instead of just burning the videots folder with Nero?

I believe this is my final break down and should be better quality than anything else you can do, besides buying a second retail DVD.

1. rip with ripit4me/dvd decrypter to HD.
2. scan with fixVTS
3. build iso/mds with imgburn
4. burn mds with imgburn to DVD9

Since I want 0 compression the only other step worth considering is removing some of the fbi copy protect screens and have it go straight to root menu.

If money is not an object is there a newer plextor better than the 716a or is that considered the king of the hill still?

Dennis

Because Nero doesn't handle layer breaks very well. ImgBurn does.

and YES the PX-716A is the best burner ever made by Plextor so you want to keep it since there not making it anymore BUT you can still get the PX-716SA sata drive which is the same specs.
