Supposedly there are NO 16X $onys that areTYs.

yup! confirmed by urs truly, correct-a-mundo~ :) edit: I AM ONLY REFERRING TO THE 16x DVD+R Sony brand MIJ, you will NOT find YUDEN000T03s under the Sony brand name, regardless of country of origin...regardless of "spacer" shape/color :)

to be a lil more precise, cincyrob has the right idea...

Sony 16x DVD+R (MIT & MIJ)= SonyD21 MID coding, NOT Taiyo Yuden made.

Sony 16x DVD-R (MIJ of course) = Taiyo Yuden TYG03 coding~ (i picked up a 50-pack just for testing purposes since it's been awhile since i've used TYG03s) LOL

So there are 16X Sonys that are TYs (-Rs).So now I'm confused, doc TY. You confirmed what I had written and then stated there are Sony 16x TYs in the next sentence??? :)

Perhaps the confusion lies in mentioning Sony MIJ media, With Sony only the -R disks couldd be TY made, with those you need to find the white octagonal spacer on top, otherwise the grey or white round spacer are Sony disks.Ty does make both + and - 16X media, just right now I don't think that anyone in the states has found many +R as of yet that aren't labelled as TY, whereas the 8X could be found as Fuji MIJ or Maxell, or Sony, to name a few. Hope this helps.

^^ Couldn't be any clearer--even though it already was lol.

I don't like the -Rs, probably because of the booktyping (or lack thereof) and also because my players really like the +.

You can't booktype -R media, only +R. If your burner does not have booktyping/bitsetting abilities, -R will be more compatible with stand alone players. However, many of the "older" stand alones will not even play -R. They should, however, play dvd-rom as that is the format of our store bought Hollywood dvds.

Many people don't understand what booktyping/bitsetting is all about. On simple terms, let say formats are like languages that are written. Dvd-rom is a universal language that is understood by the majority except in a few cases, the illiterate. So changing +R to Dvd-rom, is like using an interpreter.

Older players, that are able to read recordable discs (the ones we use), will read -R more easily than +R, simply because -R debuted before +R. Therefore, those older players will most likely have problems +R discs. This problem *could* be averted if you booktype +R discs to ROM.

Now, if you have a DVD player that is extremely old (say, you purchased it when DVD players debuted), + or -, it doesn't matter, the player is not gonna read the disc. It has no idea what the hell a recordable disc is. It's kinda like trying to back up a next gen DVD with Shrink. Shrink came out long before the next gen discs, so if you try and "open disc" with Shrink, it's not gonna know what the hell it is.

If you have a newer player, or one that is like only a year or two old, it'll probably play either format, regardless if one is written as ROM (like my player).

Anyway, writing to ROM, doesn't necessarily mean you're actually writing it to ROM (the same format that commercial dvds use), you're just recording it that way trying to fool any player into thinking it's ROM, thus, making it easier on the player to read them.

+R discs is the only format that can be written as ROM; NOT -R. This is why I stick with +R discs. That, and every player in my house loves 'em.

ok now that last post cleared some things up. so the -r's cannot be converted to -rom and that is what all the movies are dvd-rom's,but all +r can be converted....but in some instance's the standalones have problems reading the +r's even though they are booktyped as -rom....which i have one of those stand alones that have problems reading my 16x+r verbs.......

sorry guys i know this isnt the right thread to be talking about this..

CincyRob,

Some stand alones do not like certain brands of media, some don't like the speeds at which they are burnt, and some don't like compressed media (ie. trying to fit the whole DVD9 onto a DVD5 disc)

My son has taken his Ritek discs to work and the players there just don't like them. They do, however, like the Maxell 002s.

Of course, there are variables of which media your burner will accept.

If we impart this knowledge, it will make for better choices when people look for media on sale. You can get GOOD media for excellent prices. Most people just look for what's on sale without knowing what they are getting.

sorry garmoon, i was blitzing thru threads really fast last nite~ :)

for clarification, i took your quote to IMPLY that Sony in the 16x speed DVD+R are NOT TAIYO YUDENS...the MIJ Sony 16x DVD-R with the white octagonal spacer (as blivetNC mentioned) ARE TAIYO YUDENS~ :)

sorry for the confusion, i should be more careful in confirming "truths" and dispelling myths~ :)

my fingers were going at a faster rate than my brain was late evening yesterday~ :)

The Office Depot price at the beginning of this thread is incorrect for the 50 packs of Maxell 16X DVDs . . . The REGULAR price is $36.99 each, but they are on sale for $24.99 buy one and get one for free. I just got back from my local OD and they had a mixture of MIT and MIJ 16X +R packages. I purchased four MIJ and received four for free . . they code out as MXL003 . . not too shabby getting 400 MIJ MXL made discs for $105.98 out the door!!

Also, KMart has 25 packs of Sony DVDs for $7.99 . . . all of the 8X were MIJ . . they had some 16X mixed in and they were MIT

None of the previous statements pertain to -R media as I don't ever bother paying any attention to that stuff any more

I figured that out after reading several posts later. I looked Sunday there are no Sony 16X +Rs at my office depot.I saw some 8X TYs MIJ but they were not on sale. I don't use -Rs.
